In the first part of my Samarkand 2 part series, I explore the Registan and the Mausoleum of Timur.
The jewel of the Silk Road: Samarkand was once the largest and most influential city in Central Asia. Right at the heart of the exchange of valuable goods and ideas, it has left its mark on history. It grandeur still stands. Intricately designed mosques and Islamic schools along with mausoleums line these ancient streets, with towering blue domes and tiled archways. The cities impressive architecture transported me to another time and another place. This is the first part of my time in Samarkand, and here’s how it went…

I finished 9 days travel to same cities: Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. Best time spent. Mostly sacred tombs and all places were visited. Mostly walked through all. Lovely and mystical. End of June turns out is not tourist season and it was great chance to travel with a lot less crowd. Got lucky.

In 1924, the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established as part of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1929, it became an independent republic and was renamed the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik SSR, Таджикская ССР). However, the predominantly ethnically Tajik cities of Samarkand and Bukhara remained within the Uzbek SSR.

Great work. Thanks for posting. just one thing; Registan (pronounced Regh Stan) actually means a "pebbled place" (in Persian/Tajik--still the language of most folks in Samarkand) as the square was once carpeted with pebbles for the pedestrians to hang around. it is now paved by the Russians in stone. in fact, all city plazas were called that, even when they were not carpeted with pebbles

For the last thousand years, on the territory of Central Asia, the Tajiks did not have their own states at all. both in Samarkand and Bukhara, all historical buildings were built under the rule of the Uzbeks, even the most ancient Minaret in Bukhara, built in 1127, by order of Arslankhan Muhammad who was the ruler of the Turkic Karakhanid state. these are the Bolsheviks, in order to weaken the Uzbeks, from part of the territory of the Uzbeks they drew Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, cutting us off from the Caspian Sea and from China and giving the north-eastern territory of the Uzbeks to the Kazakhs, from part of the territory of the Uzbeks they drew a greater Kazakhstan. in the north to Lake Balkhash and in the east to China this is part of the territory of the Uzbeks, the Syrdarya River was an internal river of the Uzbeks .
