Most people think that Jimi had a faerytale life , but it is the farthest thing from the truth. From his tough childhood , the racism he lived through even while famous , and his abusive management. Now I totally understand why he told Dick Cavett that he had several nervous breakdowns. When in the video I got to the part about the release of ' Smash Hits ' I had a flashback. It was early summer 1970 when I went to my sister's room to look for something different to listen to. One of her friends had left ' smash Hits ' and my 10 year old self was curious to hear it. When I heard ' Purple Haze ' it was love at first listen which I recorded onto cassette. A couple of months later I brought up the morning paper before going to school and right there on the front page was the terrible news that Jimi was gone. Thankfully people like you help keep his spirit alive , and for that I am forever grateful.
Track Records release of Smash Hits was the better. I played Highway Chile from the first I heard it on the UK release until this day. That, Stone Free, and Taking Care of No Business are the most autobiographical of Jimi's songs. Manic Depressions(S) was likely written for Chas Chandler, who always fought about Jimi's volume. Chas told in an interview about Jimi saying, I may as well go back to America if I can play my sound the way I want ("I think I'll go tune myself off, and uh, go on down. Really ain't no use in me hanging around) If you listen carefully, every occurrence says "manic depressionS" which suggests influences OUTSIDE, not within. I didn't understand that song for DECADES
It's great to see that pic at 8:53 blown-up on my TV monitor. It's the back of Voodoo Soup, one of the BEST compilations of Jimi's music ever. Along with First Rays of the New Rising Sun. For long time fans it was about time they got it right. I still can't believe that more black folks are not big on Jimi. Well, before rap anyway. So good to see pix from that Harlem street fair. While Jimi surely needed a break, his time from the Dick Cavet show until 1970 had Jimi free but surrounded by too many hangers on looking for some support and screaming his soul out wasting money in the studios. Some good came out of it. But instead of a recharge period it seemed Jimi's need to have a break had too many old weights on his shoulders for anything healthy to come of it. Yet his genius and much mediocrity came through.
I've always said that Jimi needed to woodshed with his guitar and get a pianist to work out some musical theory and whatnot. I guess with all the hangers on that would have been impossible.
I'm hoping someone contributes photos from the April 1970 launch of the Cry of Love Tour at the Inglewood Forum. I was there and have only seen the 3 black/white shots published, 2 of Jimi and Billy Cox in the back stage corridor heading for the stage, and the one of him on stage. He was in a noticeable great mood. AND there was live c.c. tv projection behind the band I have wondered for decades if it was printed to video tape
I still feel sorry for Billy Cox, who was sort of jerked around, traveling back and forth a couple of times, from his home in Nashville, to NYC, to help Hendrix get his music back together...Jimi actually thought about trying out other bass players during this time, and I feel that was an insult to Billy Cox...but I guess it shows just how confused Hendrix was at this point in his career. He really did not need, or regret losing Noel, who was not really much of a bass player...but on the other hand, he just did not know who he did want!
Billy dosed with LSD without consent was the most horrible experience for him. He bailed "due to illness" after that. Michael Jeffrey likely attempting to sabotage Jimi's all Black band. Noel definitely needed to be replaced. He NEVER WAS a bassist. He was a guitar player playing bass. Chandler's rushed "putting a band together around Jimi"
I kind of feel like if Jimi had asked Buddy to be in the Experience and had a friend who played like Buddy Miles that he could have avoided a lot of the things that caused his troubles. Bill Graham would have been a great manager for the Experience…The industry around him was just focused on the sensational money I would rather have him alive at 85 with his grandchildren at home rather than the bullshit fame, drug torture and early death…
@@RelicOnMaui Your timescale is off here. Billy was spiked with LSD at Fehmarn, where Jimi played his last "official" public concert, with Mitch on drums. Unfortunately, Billy became paranoid and headed back to his parents' house for much-needed support. However, I'm sure that Belly Button Window will get to all of this in due course. I agree as regards Noel. Jimi had actually called Billy in 1966 and asked him to come over to England. Sadly, Billy was otherwise engaged at the time.
Yes, that part about Jimi writing music about peace and tranquillity is evident in songs like Angel and Earth Blues. Finding peace and stillness can be so elusive in a noisy and crowded world.
Great series with no B S ! Great job. Cut’s through many of the myths and exposes some of the little known facts. I had the poster from Smash Hits on my bedroom wall in 1971. Good times to be nine years old and very little crap music around (compared to today)…
I bet it was that white 62 , les Paul, sg custom that the kids stole from the corvette, like you said if it was an average off the rack strat he probably would have gave it to the kids.
I could have been either his black beauty 68' strat or his white 68' strat, although they technically were off the shelf guitars, they were both favourites of his, especially the black one, he played them far more than the SG LPC, he stopped using that guitar and replaced it later on with his custom built flying V, which was less microphonic than the SG LPC
@@maximusindicusoblivious180 not sure what you mean, but I know he had one of those or at least played one backstage, he also had a Les Paul Jr as well, but his black strat was his favorite from what I understand
