A talking with lots of demonstration tutorial looking at 'my' Berlin School focused rack - which can do a lot lot more btw - but following on from my Making Tangerine Dream walkthrough from last week. Covering rack overview, how to use 4 clock dividers for performance flexibility, how to use one sequencer to control the others, how to cross clock for polymeter and polyrhythm, how to sync other modules with their own sequencers, and a look at performative flow (how to flow between sections etc) so in summary an under the bonnet and a big 'How To' (well how I do) in the following chapters ... skip around if you want and please like!
Note: I do interchange the words clock, gates, triggers, steps, sync here and there, apologies in advance but I am focusing on practical music making here vs a tech demo or review ... a short summary of those words
A gate is a regular or irregular pulse voltage with a variable length, to open and close other devices
A trigger is a regular or irregular very short pulse voltage that is always very short, just to 'trip' something
A clock is a regular short pulse to usually keep two sequencer based instruments locked to each other
Steps are of course the usually irregular outputs from sequencers to sound sources and can be multiples or divisions of incoming clocks or triggers or gates ...

Love these "how I do it" vids, Gary! really helpful and loads of good ideas to try! I'm still amazed how consistently similar our module choices have been - not identical, by any means, but the same ideas.

Whuooo 🤦🏻‍♀️❤️.

@@GaryHayes Thanks for the reply, Gary! Simple is sometimes just right for making modular musical in the style of Berlin School. Personally, I love it. Now know I need a 2HP DIV to try out these techniques. 😄

Whuoooo 🤦🏻‍♀️❤️. All this... is Fantastic!!! Finally a truly instructive and interesting video for those like me who are new to electronics and have little knowledge of electronics. This is all I've ever wanted to accomplish despite starting my performances late. I love, I love TD. Since I was a child.. I recently created a set of Synths to create all this, but I have no Rack, only 960 beheringer, Maq 16/3 for sequencer. Synth Moog Sub 37 and An1x Yamaha. I have to equip myself for Ratchet, sincere Watches etc... You have made me happy with your Professionalism, Competence and Empathic Taste in your approach to Music/Sounds/that I adore. Thank you, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I would be happy to be in your presence learning and playing hours together 🙏❤️ My mentor

Wow super complimentary - glad I can be of help. I deliberately kept it very simple at the start, well throughout really as I know some modular tutorials on RU-vid, assume you know ALL the basics. This is one simple way to do things with clocks/gates/triggers and there are many more - I have done tutorials using Pams and Ornament/Crime and basic slider clocks in the past, but menu based eurorack modules are less performative for sure ... also coming up in a few days I have integrated Chaos (Marbles) and it breathes a lot of random/chance elements into the trigger (and notes) of this - will probably call it Joy of Clock II : Absolute Chaos :)

Thanks for the walkthrough and patching of you rack. Extremely informative and thought provoking. Interesting how one can come up with a similar outcome using different methods/modules. 😀😀😀

Thanks Phil. Yes multiple ways to crack an egg. It all comes down to the creator in terms of what they need ... As I mentioned Pam's or dedicated ratchet modules or more menu based clocks all possible...for live performance though needs are different

Hi Gary, being a newbie to modular your tutorial video's are invaluable to me, so thank you for making them so easy to follow. I 'm starting with a very basic setup and using a 960 to sequence a Model D with clock coming from an NTS-1. The 960 audio runs into a Doepfer A138S mixer and then into the NTS-1. This works fine except that I can't get any effects out of the NTS-1 (reverb or delay) however if I play the notes on it then I get all effects. I'm running L & R mono patch leads from the A138 into a single mono lead into the NTS-1 and I'm wondering whether this is the problem and I should in fact be using 2 x mono to TRS into the NTS-1. Could I ask please what the audio feed into your NTS-1 is, mono or TRS. Thanks
@GaryHayes
@GaryHayes 21 день назад
Hi Lynton - thanks! There is a global setting on the NTS1 that routes the audio in through its 3 effects chain ... you can decide on if you want it to come in on Modulation, Delay or Reverb or Bypass them all ... stereo in is fine. But check the quick start guide for NTS1 for the actual 20 second way to switch this

@@GaryHayes Hi Gary, yes it was the global settings that needed to be changed, all fine now. Really appreciate your help with this, many thanks.
