Honestly? Your videos have become much more than just learning languages. They've become motivational. Even when I'm not focused on my Japanese studies, I can still watch your content for just...moving foward with life, my career, my relationships. Happy 2023, Robin. Here's to a fresh start! Also, I know you like foreign language novels and you have Japanese under your belt. Have you read Kamogawa Runner (鴨川ランナー)? It's a semi-autobiographical novel by Gregory Khezrnejat, who is from the US state of South Carolina, but currently lives in Japan as an adult. He wrote the novel entirely in Japanese, and he even won an official award for it. I don't know, it may be a book right up your alley.
Heyyy @KirbyLinkACW! Sorry that my reply is a little slow, it's been so lovely and heartwarming to see the comments coming in and I wanted to sit down and take lots of time to reply to everyone properly. Your comment was one of the first and I have to say it really made a big difference and was incredibly encouraging! For years I've hoped to eventually transition my content to being broader than just about languages; but more general lifestyle where languages are a key feature - and with my content channels being a place people can come to for those good vibes, positivity, encouragement, and general inspiration/motivation. But it's quite scary to change the type of content I create in case people aren't happy with the changes, and the way you described what my videos have become to you is EXACTLY the way I hope people would feel, so that's really encouraging for me. Thank you! ☀️❤️ Also, I haven't actually heard of 鴨川ランナー but it sounds awesome! Definitely sounds right up my alley, I'll add that to my wish list! I hope your 2023 has gotten off to a great start and I hope to hear updates about it in the comments of videos this year!
Thank you for this, there are many people that need this message. It takes opening yourself up to vulnerability to spread a message like this and you should be proud. Thank you
It's wonderful to see you back. It takes courage to make a fresh starts and to be willing to learn from them. Life is full of changes, it never stays static and it is so important to embrace the change rather than becoming discouraged. Thank you for reminding us of that!
I like the new concept: I know quite a lot of things about language learning now, and a lot of them don't suit my way of learning or are not adapted to my situation, so other subjects and subjects of reflection are welcome. I'm glad to see you back, especially on RU-vid, as it is the only social media I'm using.
I just downloaded a premade anki deck for Finnish. It's been my dabbling language for three years now. I've sort of been plateauing in Hebrew for a while. I'm hardly ever learning new words anymore and that's actually pretty demotivating. Despite that my reading level still isn't too great. I'll still continue to improve on my Hebrew, but I think studying more Finnish could help keep me into language learning.
I really feel this video. I’m soon losing my job & being retrenched but I will be working for myself & it’s going to be a new experience that will also allow me to finally have time to reconnect with family & friends who I’ve lost so much time with (also I’ve been chronically ill & it’s been difficult not knowing what will happen 😔). So I’m feeling a mix of sadness about my health but I’m excited to be around the things that truly matter to me again.
I discovered you originally for language learning, I have rediscovered you and now following for your inspiration and motivation. Exceptional work. Thank you.
Yes! I'll be posting a mixture of videos about languages, lifestyle (like this one), and I hope to also do some vlog content where you'll get to see me using my languages in daily life which I think would also be really fun and a nice companion to the language discussion videos :) I really hope you'll enjoy them!
Great to see you back. Moving and starting a demanding new job is very exciting but also takes a whole lot of energy and focus, so no wonder it's taken you a while to find a new balance. Really looking forward to having your voice back in my life.
I'm so happy you're taking the time to consider the changes you need for yourself to grow to be where you want. It's so great to re-introduce yourself to your hobbies and allow yourself the ability to learn from the experiences you're had. Personally, I don't think you need to think of this transition as a fresh start but more so a reignition. It's so hard to get back into the interests you've had in the past but with an intention of working towards making time for those interests you had will help you push forward. A new year, a new start isn't realistic, on the other hand, a new perspective with a new approach can drastically alter the way you live your life. Every day is a new day to make better than the day before, if looking at it as a fresh start is the best encouragement for you that's great, but more than that it's a new opportunity!! Changes and growth are a result and I hope this year is fruitful :)
I'm also about to have some fresh starts - I'm moving back to Australia in a few weeks, getting a new job, new neighbourhood, new house etc. Great to hear your takes on it!
Watching this video at the start of the new Church Jewish & School year - end of August 2023. Thank you for the encouragement. I particularly liked the habit of reading fiction, etc., in foreign languages. Perhaps you could do more videos on how best to go about this and also present your personal library. Have you watched Alexander Arguelles on Poly Literacy?
It’s great to see you back Robin! Your content inspires me to romanticize all the mundane parts of my life. Language learning study, cleaning, and working from home. You’ve taught me that as long as you have a cup of coffee, that yucky hard work can be a peaceful opportunity for a small joy, instead of a chore 😂
@@RobinMacPhersonFilms thanks and likewise to you too, Robin. I'm starting as a Freelance Writer. I haven't had any clients yet, but I keep on writing 😁
I don't often write comments. But today I have discovered your channel thanks to EasyGerman, and I'm really impressed! I don't usually tell how wonderful a content might be to me. But today I have seen how a video can give motivation and smile before going to bed to close a day. I am going to write a quotation from you on my wall to keep love everyday's "fresh starts". Thanks a lot.
Hah, this is perfect timing. I just moved to SF a week ago and have been enjoying my time here so much already. I decided to move here after visiting here for two months and really enjoyed spending time here. I am meeting so many cool people! I really appreciate your videos, you have been doing a great job. I love the vibe and topics of your videos.
Thanks so much Brian! It's really nice to see you, it's so heartwarming seeing all the wonderful and familiar names commenting and giving me support ☀️ I hope this year will be a great one for you, too!
@@RobinMacPhersonFilms You are most welcome Robin ! It will be great to hear your words of encouragement again. I hope you are settling in okay over the pond ! Take care mate !
Welcome back Robin. Photography is such a rewarding hobby. My biggest hurdle of 2022 was being diagnosed with aphantasia and how not being able to visualize affects my language learning ability.
Thanks so much Kate! I'm very sorry to have kept you waiting, it's such a relief to finally get going again. I'm feeling so optimistic and hopeful for a great new year of content 😊
So good to see you again Robin. I was wondering how things were working out with the new job and all the changes that would bring. It’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you for sharing. Take care xxx
Heyyy Jadwiga! Yes! At the moment I'm doing my best to slowly ramp up all of my projects, currently focused on RU-vid, Journaly, Patreon - including the secret podcast, and making Instagram a bigger and more consistent part than it has ever been. That's already a lot so for now I'll focus on getting that right, and once I have a really good rhythm I'll be reviving the book club! ☀️☺️❤️
OMG robin, I was l like "whhhhheeerre is he" your videos are so full of helpful info PLEASE get on a schedule that works for you so we can know when to expect video. It's also that we feel like you are a friend... I'm a RU-vidr too so I know how hard it is...but when you go away for a longer time it's hard for us. Anyway thanks for all you do and hope you are very well...now onto the video. Yes my sense was you didn't put as much attention into dating/relationship-- as you never mentioned it even in passing....take time for yourself in other areas of your life as you say for more balance. yes at 12:13 so true, I've wondered about that in folks who constantly are on the move....
Very thoughtful video. As a fellow San Franciscan, I’d be interested in hearing how you find opportunities to speak and practice other languages (IRL) in the Bay Area, versus in the UK.
I've been in huge need of a fresh start with English learning. I decided to start learning my first foreign language at the beginning of 2021. And around the end of 2022, I reached around a B2 level in the language. Which is incredible, it's something I had desired for a long time. But now that passion is simply gone, and I don't know how to have this fresh start with English. I not only want to but I need to improve my English, especially now that it's getting rusty as I don't practice as I used to. But for some reason it just doesn't work anymore, I simply loved sitting down to study and use this language. Maybe what I need is to use it in real life abroad, which I simply can't do for the time being. Anyways, this has been a pain in the neck for me, such a beautiful language.
Hi Nori, a B2 in 2 years is so impressive! It really shows how much time and effort you must have put in to reach that milestone. Your punctuation, grammar, and transition words really flow the way a native speaker’s would in conversation. If you don’t find joy in learning English anymore, you could be burnt out. You’re doing awesome though, and it sounds to me like you just needed the break from studying English for awhile after you worked so hard at it for so long. Don’t be too hard on yourself for getting rusty, I’m sure it will come back as soon as you do a refresher review. Maybe starting back slow by playing in the language would help you enjoy it again, and encourage you to more formally study to be able to more fully enjoy your English activities. I’m doing the same with Spanish right now (aka just lots of Netflix, karoake and random videos on RU-vid in 😂) Just because you’re not formally studying doesn’t mean you’re not putting in time and work. I’m sure that’s what C1 learning activities are like since you’re getting into the native speaker/advanced territory there. You’re already doing that by watching native content like Robin’s videos!
@@GrowthUncut Hey, Anne! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me! That was very sweet of your part. As for now, I think I might be starting to feel a little excited about improving my English again. I still don't know, but don't worry, I won't give up on it. And keep working at your Spanish by the way, it's such a rich language! Which I don't have the guts or will to learn lol, even though it's so similar to Portuguese, my native language.
What do you think about extensive reading for learning programming? I have this idea that learning languages and programming shouldn't be so different. Since you know programming it would be interesting to get to know your opinion.
I absolutely love that fresh start! ☺️❤️ It's going to be a truly wonderful year over in the Journaly community - we've already launched two new features and have some reaaaaally big and exciting ones on the roadmap that we're actively working on every week!
🤣 你抓到我啦!Toast is still my beloved weekend breakfast but I get these lovely videos of the morning routine and felt this was a nice way to illustrate a beautiful Monday morning and fresh start to a new week 😂
The national language of the Philippines is Filipino. The Filipino language has words derived from Tagalog, Spanish, and English. To compare Tagalog and Filipino: Tagalog: Nauunawaan ko ang wikang sinasambit ng aming lolo. Filipino: Naiintindihan ko yung mga salitang ginagamit ng lolo ko. English: I can understand the language/words used by my grandfather.
I really needed to do some mental detox tonight and this video helped. You helped! Merci! Also another thing got my attention was the way you just take your moment and sip your coffee. Ignoring the fact(?!) that it’s a part of video making, it filled me with peace; feels like you’re totally living that moment, like even living in that sip to “just BE”!That’s what I’m gonna practice. You do have a positive impact. Thank you :)
