@@Reichsritter Henry VII had the same idea bc beyond the whole uniting York and Lancaster in the bed chamber he also claimed to be descended from King Arthur of legend. To cement this cult of legitimacy he named his first born son Arthur. Also speaking of Yorkists there were still some, mostly women, floating around so vii and viii killed most of them, one being an 80 year old princess in the 1540s, bc thats totally a threat.
The history of Henry the 8th and his 6 fucking wives is one of the only good, memorial worthy histories of the entire monarch. Seriously, if this dude hadn't had 6 freaking wives and killed 2 of his 6 wives he honestly probably wouldn't have that commemorated. But because he was thid equal parts realistic and eccentric d-bag the various indepth studies on his life has resulted in a very prolific understanding of what kind of king this dude really was
Michelle Anderson henry 8 was considered a good monarch until his CTE from the jousting accident. Then he went crazy. And in all fairness, he probably wouldnt have just kept catherine around had anne boleyn and her father didnt manipulate him into divorcing her.
To paraphrase one of my teachers: "Never name the heir to the English throne Arthur. They *will* die, and that's how we end up with people like Henry VIII."
@@caiawlodarski5339 To be honest I gamble that he will die before his mother which is kinda sąd, but... The saddest part of his life from mine point of view he is that his only way to promotion to job he is waiting since forever is death of his own mother
@@LynxSouth Dude, calm down. It was just a joke about how many Arthur's have died and how the name seems cursed. She didn't summarize the era with just that.

Also keep in mind that the Pope was pretty much held hostage by Charles V after 1527. Catherine of Aragon is Charles V's Aunt and he didn't want a member of his family to be humiliated and made the Pope block any chance of an annulment between Henry and Catherine.
Oh Charles V, the meddler of all meddlers. Perhaps had he not thought to stick his nose in this business, England perhaps would have remained in the Catholic fold? Ah well, at least a couple other empires would give the Hapsburgs some good old slaps to the face.
@@januarysson5633 Tbf it's not like they were the only royal family doing that, they were just unfortunate enough to end up with the Habsburgian jaw and Charles II of Spain.
On one hand, she _was_ actually married to Henry (contrary to what the video implies). On the other hand, she was cool with the divorce. (According to my brief research, the marriage was initiated for political reasons; it sounds like he regretted the move once he met Anne and only went through the motions to avoid pissing off one of the few Protestant rulers of note.)
@@timothymclean I heard that on their first meeting Henry dressed up as a peasant to surprise Anne and she was not okay with some random peasant bothering her and Henry got pissed and divorced her.
Moreover, until a few decades ago, wasn't there some weird protocol saying that divorced members of the royal family couldn't be received by the monarch at Court? For the current queen that would have included her own sister and 3 of her 4 children. Got abolished later
They broke away from the largest criminal empire the world has ever seen, that continues to this day. Pretty sure they are fine with the RCC and it’s wickedness not being entrenched in its country.

@steve gable yeah . but catholicism was started from persecution of pagans in rome until emperor constantine rose to power.not a pretty good start btw.

@@hugosmith4845 yeah it would be a good video. From what I know about Luther is that he was for reform but then later in life was against. Deciding splitting off was a better choice.
@@hugosmith4845 in fairness to Luther he split from the church over what he saw as growing corruption and the spiritual decline of papacy. Henry just wanted to bang a new wife and kicked off a period of not new but ramped up bullying of Ireland by the English monarchy.
Anne of Cleeves, wife #4 didn't just get out of the marriage, she didn't have to go home either! She got a castle, lands and an income and lived happily ever after.
The "wooing" in question was between Henry VIII's son (prince Edward) & his infant grandniece (Mary, queen of Scots). Henry wanted to unite Scotland & England under one monarch. Since Mary was an infant, Edward was a child & he was fully grown, he expected to be wearing the pants in this diplomatic relationship. Scotland was unimpressed. They sent Mary to France where she married the dauphin, Francis. After he died, she moved back to (now-Protestant) Scotland & married her half-cousin lord Darnley. He was a terrible husband & Mary had him killed, for which she lost her crown to their infant son, James. He would later become James I of England.
Historia Civilis is the only youtuber I have watched every single video of and I always watch them all the way through. Also, julias caesar is my facorite historical figure and im an ancient roman historian so i love his in depth videos. The animation makes it easier to comprehend what is happening.
Aside from being a musician, he's also inspired some musical pieces. Even his wives became an an inspiration for Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry VIII
Yes. Katherine Howard and Anne Boelyn were cousins. They were also related to Jane Seymour, though more distantly. Catherine Parr (The surviving one) was also Catherine of Aragon's (The first wife) goddaughter. Parr then went onto marry, get this, Jane Seymour's Brother Thomas Seymour, who sexually abused Elizabeth I but that's not the point. When Henry 8 died Catherine Parr had a bunch of ladies in waiting and took some more to her estate to help her. One of them was Lady Jane Grey, who was the niece of Henry 8/first cousin once removed of Mary 1, Elizabeth 1 and Edward 6. Hold on it gets wilder. Edward 6 was apparently very close to Jane Grey, as they were a similar age and Eddy's sisters weren't really part of his life, except for when Catherine Parr was Queen, cause she wanted them to be actual siblings. In reality, Catherine Parr is the only reason we got Elizabeth 1, as she made Henry reinstate her as an official heir. Anyways, Jane Grey, so when Eddy dies, he makes Jane Grey his successor, probably under the influence of Jane's father and Jane's husbands father. Anyways it's unknown if Jane was ever truly Queen, cause around 9 days after she's declared next-in-line and possibly unofficially coronated, 30-ish year old Mary 1 rocks up, declares her unfit for the crown, deposes her, then throws her in the Tower of London where she's beheaded. Jane's father, father in law and husband were hung drawn and quartered or something, I think her husband may have been torn apart by rope pulled by oxen, I don't remember, and Queen Mary 1 is crowned queen, where she outlaws Protestantism, kills anyone who doesn't convert, keeps having miscarriages or dead babies so her husband leaves her and finally dies of probably cysts or cancer. She's followed by Elizabeth I who's thankfully not insane and goes on to rule for 60 years. Also each of the Wives of Henry 8. Catherine Aragon died of cancer, most likely in her heart, Boleyn was falsely accused of adultery, witchcraft and treason and was beheaded, Jane Seymour died of childbirth complications, Anne/Anna of Cleves lived the longest, far away in Germany for a bit, but came back to England cause she and Henry became friends, and died most likely of cancer and was apparently good friends with Catherine Parr, Katherine Howard, Edward 6, Mary 1 and Elizabeth 1, Katherine Howard was 19, most likely forced into a sexual relationship Thomas Culpeper (Who was her Distant cousin...ewww) and was beheaded, and finally, Catherine Parr outlived Henry, got pregnant with Thomas Seymour's kid, Mae/Mary Seymour, and died because people didn't wash their damn hands when women give birth. Then Mary Seymour died at age two. Sorry for this fucking essay, I love the Tudor's and I love SIX the musical and I love Catherine Parr cause she was an early feminist and overall badass.
Hi@@VestigeGG You got most of that right But I'm going to point out that Anne of Cleves didn't go back to Germany and that she actually lived out the rest of her life in England. I know that a small mistake but I just wanted to point it out. Have a nice day

King Henry VIII was one of the earliest recordings I’ve known of someone getting catfished. Interesting. Probably has happened to plenty of early nobles when the term wasn’t even a thought in their heads.
It did always confuse me how a devoutly catholic king who wrote a book on how important the pope was would create his own church that only existed to not have a pope
Love your stuff. You make history fun. But I miss your rapid fire narration. The best part for you is I had to watch it more than once to get it all. Oh look! I can speed it up in the settings. Keep up the good work. Glad to see you back!
In fact Henry and Catherine were pretty much in love, there´s a letter written by henry where he expresses his desire to marry Catherine, "even over other women" , the only reason he left with Anne was because he wanted a male heir.
Great, informative, and funny videos as always. Hate to be a nitpicker but when you showed Henry's dysfunctional family around the time Edward was born, his other illegitimate son, Henry, was already dead at that point.
To be fair to Henry the 8th he did start the Royal Navy I wish he could of talked about Charles Brandon I just took a college course on Tudor and Stuart England and not going lie the constant revolting of Ireland was so accurate

Can you do a video about 'Mad Jack' Churchill? He fought in WW2 with bagpipes, a bow and a longsword, escaped more than once from a concentrationcamp and was furious that the war ended.
Actually Henry VIII was very much taken with the beautiful young 'Spanish Princess' Catalina (Catherine of Aragon) . They were even betrothed when Henry was 12. It was the dight over her dowry between King Ferdinand of Aragon and Henry VII that took so damn long for them to marry. After Elizabeth of York died, he considered marrying Catalina himself partly because he was taken with her and partly because he didnt want to lose her dowry, half of which had already been paid in golden plates (actual plates..like dinnerware plates lol) However after abput 6 or 7 years of bickering between the 2 kings. Henry VII became ill and on his deathbed he told Henry VIII he could marry whomever he chose. He chose Cataline, the future Queen Catherine 7 years his junior. He couldnt wait to marry her. If they were allowed to have married sooner perhaps she would have given him a son or two...who lived.
So weird hitting the Field of Cloth of Gold again, but my goodness has the animation improved! I love feeling like I'm creating some kind of cinematic universe even though people in history just interacted with each other
