Balhae (발해, 渤海, Бохай, ᡦᡠᡥᠠᡳ) (698-926) was a multi-ethnic kingdom in Manchuria, parts of the Korean peninsula as well as the Russian Far East. Balhae was founded in 698 under the name Jin (震,진). It's called Bohai in China. The history of Balhae and its borders are the subject of a historiographical dispute between China, Korea and Russia.
Balhae was established by refugees from Goguryeo and Tungusic Mohe tribes in 698 when Dae Joyeong 대조영 defeated the Whu Zhou dynasty 武周 at Tianmenling. These same refugees were defeated by Tang-Silla armies in 668.
Balhae had a really diverse population which included Khitan and Evenks peoples. Culturally, Balhae was an amalgamation of Tang Chinese, Korean and Tungusic.
Balhae had 15 kings. For many of them, not a lot is known because primary sources from Balhae have not survived. One thing that is constant though is trade with Tang and Japan.
Balhae is sometimes referred to as the North-South division of Korea; the South being Silla.
