"Preservation Act 2" (1974) The Kinks | it is the hidden gem that Ray Davies so enthusiastically created at a delicate moment in his personal life. An operetta with small melodic pieces of total beauty and elegance. One of the most interesting works for music lovers or advanced listeners. I love Preservation Act. Great RCA musical stage. Greetings

Many thanks for watching and commenting! I do agree with you. I think maybe because they went through about 5 distinct phases, people tend to prefer particular batches of albums eg theatrical, arena rock, pop etc. and their personal favourites then come from that phase. If that makes sense?? Mike

Lovely list, very thoughtful, like literally full of thought. I take a comfort in learning my (excellent) taste in music is nothing unique to me, just rare. Our Top 5 are exactly the same, just different order. As an American, Muswell Hillbillies is maybe one of the few PERFECT LPs ever anywhere by anyone. Most people in America have never seen the Black HIlls or Badlands, or Oklahoma, and our frame of reference and influence evoked from these seemingly mythical places is the same as Ray's ...watching them in old movies on television. We all know Ray writes such lovely songs through a uniquely British filter which paints a thorough picture of his English perspective , but he so nails the American Experience so well with this one, and song for song, it is flawless. Also it is always just exciting to see a wall full of albums that w can bet are all just awesome ones we own ourselves or wish we did, with a competent person talking about The Kinks sitting in front of it. IT is the perfect makings for a party I want to be at. Well done all around, and thanks!

Thank you so much for your really thoughtful response to my video! As you know it takes a great deal of time and effort to put these things together but when you get responses like this it makes it all worth while! Great we have same top five but not surprising that would be different order. Let’s be honest if I ranked again I would probably move a few around. Interestingly, I play in a Kinks tribute band in the UK and we have been asked to perform (90 minute set), at Muswell Hill next Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Muswell Hillbillies album. It’s a celebration day for the Kinks and in theory Ray and Dave will be there (hopefully). Amazing our tastes are similar and your description of Ray’s imagery in his songwriting was brilliant. Many thanks for watching and commenting. Mike

As you stated before, alot of filler in many of The Kinks albums, but so worth it to find the deep cuts, and you have revealed more for me. For years I have enjoyed Kinks playlists on Cd transferred to cassette, and later Cd to Cd. " 20th Century Man" was the best cover my 1st band ever did, very true to the original.. our singer then patched together a homemade video that we would project behind us.. back in 1991.
@pc31thevinylpoliceman
@pc31thevinylpoliceman 2 года назад
Hey Jt, have you any recordings of your band doing 20th Century, I’d hear them. We don’t do that track yet. Phobia the last album is a funny one. Far too much filler because released during CD age. If it had been 10 / 11 tracks it could have been a hard rocking classic to finish with, but because too long it tends to be near the bottom of all rankings, such a shame. Thanks for staying with it and commenting Jt. Mike

Hiya Steve, sorry, bit late responding this weekend! Yes, I think the Kinks are a bit understated. The different periods really are very different. Also, the major events and meetings seem to have moulded them. The ban from the US in the summer of 1965 made Ray Davies’ writing become very British eg Waterloo Sunset, Sunny Afternoon, Dead End Street on and on… Then being signed to Clive Davis’ Arista turned then into an arena rock band with 6 rock albums. Very interesting are the Kinks. Again, thanks for watching Steve! Mike

Thank you for your elaboration on the Kinks'24 studio albums. As an old school Kinks lover, I have the "arena albums" ranked much lower and the "theater albums" a little higher than you have. But hey that's a matter of taste. My top 10 would be: 1. Village Green...; 2. Arthur; 3. Face to Face: 4. Something Else; 5. Lola vs Powerman...; 6. Schoollboys in Disgrace; 7. Preservation Act 1; 8. Everybody's in Showbiz...; 9. Sleepwalker and 10. State of confusion.

Awesome video man. I love the Kinks. Probably my favorite band. I also love Percy. God Children's and the Lola instrumental are jamming. But I also love the song Dreams on side 2. That is such a killer Kinks tune. My number one is Lola though. Every song is great. The Contenders is the best opener of any Kinks album and when paired with the closer Gotta Be Free it can't be beat. I also love Powerman and that is my favorite Kinks song of all for sure.

Hi Stephen, really appreciate you watching and commenting. Glad you love the Kinks like me, I still think they’re a bit underrated as an important band. Since discovering the VC I’ve come to appreciate there is a lot of love for the Kinks and Arthur comes up a lot as a favourite. To my shame until recently I have only had a best of on CD. Excellent ranking video. You gave me some food for thought. I never really put it all together that if the Kinks hadn't been banned from touring the US, we wouldn't have Face to Face through Arthur. They obviously would have made music during that time, but it would have been influenced by those long treks across North America and the increased pressure and workload. I liked hearing you give some love to Phobia which I consider a very enjoyable album. I listened to it a lot when it came out and still pull it out on occasion and it is still good. I did think putting Showbiz at the very bottom was an odd choice. No love for Celluloid Heroes? I thought Lola was pretty low in your ranking. Apart from those, my ranking would be pretty close 1. Arthur 2. Village Green 3. Lola 4. Something Else 5. Muswell 6. Face to Face You made a good point that it is hard to rank all of these together because of the different periods. It's almost like different bands really. I favor the period from 66 to 71 by far, but also enjoy the arena rock period to a lesser degree. It's been a long time since I listened to the theatrical period except Schoolboys which is pretty good.

Thank you very much for watching my ranking and staying with it ......bit long! Our views seem very close. On reflection I think I could have placed Showbiz a little higher, strangely I've always found Celluloid a little corny. I know I'm in the minority there. Ive always thought that if Phobia was a 11 or 12 track album it could be right up there as a very very good album. Interesting that our top two is identical and even our top six is fairly close. Hiya Lloyd, thanks for watching, it was much longer than my normal videos but 24 studio albums is a lot. You have an impressive number of Kinks studio albums compared to others and you seem to have most of the important ones. Its good we both seem to have same top two. I’d be interested to hear what you think of the Muswell Hillbillies? I think it’s brilliant but it is very different to their others. I will say my favorite song by The Kinks is "Celluloid Heroes" which comes from the Everybody's In Show-Biz album (followed closely by "Waterloo Sunset"). Glad to see that "Low Budget" is on the higher end as it's one that I am very familiar with and was my introduction to The Kinks way back when it was released. Very thoughtful ranking. I did wonder if you’d make Arthur no.1- there is a singular truth to it and real profundity to Shangi-la. For me, Something Else should be higher, but you make two really good points, what if they’d had a George Martin, and what if the contemporary singles had been included on the albums? Thus, The Kinks, 1970 double mono compilation on Pye is one of their albums I listen to most.

You are correct that no one will agree on a ranking especially for the Kinks, but I'd say you did one of the best I've seen. My bias is it matches closer to mine than many of the others. More importantly, you highlight some of the albums that I believe have been unfairly trashed by the public starting with their final album "Phobia". I've always enjoyed that album and also felt there was a great album in there somewhere which could have been achieved with some serious editing. I am mostly in agreement with your assessment of the RCA years though I would have "Everybodys in Showbiz" ranked higher. Where I disagree is I'd have "Lola vs Powerman" ranked much higher probably top 3 for me. As for the Arista years I would put "State of Confusion" much higher, even more so if you consider the bonus tracks that have surfaced on more recent releases of the album. You do rightfully highlight the pivotal moment that "Sleepwalker" represents in the band's evolution. I had grown weary of the RCA years which Ray took too far and "Sleepwalker" was such a welcome return to form for the Kinks. "Face to Face" is indeed their first great album and began their winning streak of great albums throughout the rest of the 60's and up to "Muswell Hillbillies" in the early 70's. The MCA years were disappointing for me with "Think Visual" probably being the best if for no other reason than it contains a handful of great songs. "Arthur" and "Village Green" sit rightfully at the top for me too. Overall, a great ranking with some interesting observations.

Hi Jeff, Sorry so late in responding to your comments, I've been very ill over the last few weeks, but now back in the saddle! We agree on so much! Many thanks for your kind words. Completely agree that Phobia is totally overlooked and shouldn't be. You're right, a bit of editing and it could have been a really successful album. I blame the CD age (albums too long with too many tracks), and Ray and Dave producing. imo, if they had got a pro producer to sit above it then he would have brought out the best 11 / 12 tracks and it would have been a classic. I probably did rank Lola too low, and if ranking now I think it would be higher. Top three are still good for me though. Wonderful band, great albums. I had just gotten my first car, and I drove 25 miles to the best place for records at the time, to buy Arthur. I still remember first seeing it, picking it out, standing in line to pay for it. It felt really special and I felt so cool, "impressing" the check-out girl, (Angie), knowing things about the Kinks that my other American friends didn't. I was an "insider". It's my favorite Kinks record and in my top 20 all time of all records. BTW, Muswell is my #2, and Low Budget my #3 Kinks albums.

I think the key thing here is the way bands in the sixties felt they would be short changing the fans if they put their singles on their albums. When you look at the incredible songwriting that was going on by artists such as Ray Davies ie singles and albums you would have had genuine masterpieces if they put them all on the albums. But notwithstanding that some of the mid sixties albums were the key building blocks in my opinion. But all good! Mike

Hi Mike - This was a very comprehensive video. I'm ashamed to say that my Kinks collection is wanting and I am not very knowledgeable. Oddly, I had a bunch of Kinks cassettes, but I stupidly gave away all of my cassettes years ago. On a side note, I agree with you about album length. Filling an entire CD has clearly been difficult for many bands. We end up getting filler or tracks that should have been used as b-sides. I find it interesting that the vinyl revival has led, in some cases, to shorter records. That night be a good thing.

I used to drink in a bar in Greenwich Village with a great jukebox. Lots of great Kinks selections. If I found myself drinking early in the evening when the bar was quiet, chances are the songs I would choose would be off Arthur or Village Green. More mellow. The later I would stay, and drunker I got, I'd inevitably choose the hard rocking Arista period. So, rating their albums for me is impossible. @@pc31thevinylpoliceman Ray Davies' songwriting is quirky, capable of subtlety and satire at the same time, but often repetitive. What's wrong with the early Kinks LPs is the same kind of wrongness in the later editions. Sometimes, the words don't work, sometimes the melody isn't intriguing, sometimes both. The Kinks blazed trails in iconographic music-making, but their individualism wasn't charismatic enough to sell songs the way the Beatles did. The last third of Side 4 of the White Album, is a good example, where we seriously discuss Revolution #9 as anything but a huge waste of vinyl, and accept Savoy Truffle and Goodbye as comparable to the majority of the rest of the album. Ray wrote alone, and if we judge him by the singles and great album tracks, he probably wrote as many "hits" as anyone, Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards included. The list is impressive for its length and breadth, from proto-metal rock of All Day and All of the Night, Preservation, Everybody's a Star, and Give the People What They Want, to the pop sensibilities of Well Respected Man, Sunny Afternoon, Lola, Celluloid Heroes and Come Dancing. A Major League ballplayer only hits one out of three, if he's really good, so I guess we can give Ray a pass, for his "near-misses". I have all the Kinks songs I like on my iPod, in heavy rotation. It's always been great music, and there's never been "too much" of that.

As a HUGE Kinks fan, I totally agree with John Mendelsohn's assessment that with the possible exception of "Muswell HIllbillies," ALL their post-1970 albums are garbage. Similarly, most of their early albums on Reprise in the States and Pye in England are rather slapdash affairs with a few great songs surrounded by the typical R&B covers of the day and don't really work as "albums." That being said, what we're left with are two of the greatest albums of the 60's, "Face to Face" and "TKATVGPS." "Something Else" is a fine record but apart from the always lovely "Waterloo Sunset," I think that record is overrated by a lot of Kinks kognoscenti and certainly doesn't have as many great tunes as "Face to Face" ("Fancy," "Too Much On My Mind," "Rainy Day in June," "Dandy," "I'll Remember," AND "Sunny Afternoon"). So I'll consider both "FTF" and "TKATVGPS" tied at #1 and then "Something Else" and then "Arthur." I don't know if the "KInks Kronikles" counts since it's a "greatest hits" album of sorts, but that definitely rates ahead of "Something Else" as does "The Great Lost Kinks Album." And if anyone seeing this hasn't read Ray's "X-Ray," they should go out and purchase a copy immediately since it's no doubt the greatest autobiography of a rock star ever written 'Nuff said!

Sit down with a nice cup of tea (or something stronger), and give ‘Misfits’ a good listen, I think it’s a warmly produced album with good songs. Or if your in a heavier rock mood have a good listen to ‘Give The People What They Want’. Staying with the Arista albums ‘Sleepwalker’ has some exceptional songs ‘Brother’, ‘Live Goes On’ et al. @@pc31thevinylpoliceman Guten Tag VP: Well, I still consider myself a fan of both the Who and the Rolling Stones although I don't think either made anything worth hearing after the mid-70's at the latest. I mean who needed either when there was the Jam and Dr. Feelgood? But it's not as if I summarily rejected all of those 16 albums without listening to them first. To be honest, I don't even care much for "Lola vs. Whatever..." either and "Muswell Hillbillies" is about as far as I can indulge Ray in his "tea and crumpets" lamentations. There are certainly 5-6 tunes from the 16 records that I don't particularly mind hearing, but I couldn't imagine ever waking up in the morning and thinking, "Man, I GOTTA hear "Sleepwalkers" like I sometimes do with "Face to Face." Again, I have to reference John Mendelsohn's "take" on the Kinks as being exactly my own. Hey, I hate Led Zeppelin too, and John's prescient review of their first album pretty much qualified my feelings about their entire career. I think there are two kinds of Kinks konnisewers: Those who first fell in love with "You Really Got Me" and were there from the get go, all the way through "Arthur" and "Percy" and purchased British singles just for the B-sides that never made it to any American albums. THEN, there were those whose first Kinks experience was probably "Lola" and then followed them around through all the live shows of the 70's when Ray was flouncing around in feather boas and Mick Avory and Pete Quaife had already left. Ray's literary ambitions, like Pete Townshend's didn't necessarily translate into either great music or great albums and now I think I'll go and listen to "Creeping Jean."

Glad to hear it. Really liked your video. I'm a massive Kinks fan. What tribute band to you play in?

I need to listen to the theatrical period again. It’s probably the batch of records I’ve played and studied the least. Thanks Mike

I’ve listened to quite a lot thank you as I’m lead singer in a Kinks tribute that has a 4 hour repertoire. So I guess I must have listened at some point!

Face to Face, Arthur, Village Green, and Lola are my favorites. Phobia is my least favorite as it's too long with too much filler for my taste. That said, "Still Searching" is one of my all time favorite Kinks songs. I love everything about it.

Hi Chris, totally get what you say about Phobia. I think it would get a lot more love if 5 or 6 tracks were shaved off. It’s a product of the cd age I’m afraid, where artists thought they had to produce over an hour of music to put an album out, so quality dropped. Arthur and Village Green swap places constantly for me 1 and 2. What do you think of Muswell Hillbillies? Thanks for commenting Chris. Mike
