The La's - live & interviewed on Rapido, January 16th 1991. I have seen this elsewhere on RU-vid in lower quality, so here it is off the master tape. Sony HG T120, recorded at SP, mono audio, tape archive number 557

Timeless melody to me was about mavers talking about his own frustration with his OCD and being unable to accept his music and put it into words how he felt and how he wanted his music to feel. It was an escape to break the chain of his obsessive mind, the melody always finds him, but he can never say what he wants to say. Its genius

Maybe it might explain why he won't make a living from touring ,There she goes has kept him going as still played on the radio .

There is brilliant book on British songwriters. Mavers is in it, he talks about the music was already there he just found the chords & arranged the words. It's true, & an interesting view into his Mind.

I don't understand why they weren't bigger, if they came alone a few years later when "britpop" was popular they'd have ruled the roost

What a group!!! What an album!!! It blew me away when I bought it when it was released, 18 I was. It still blows me away. A crying shame we only got one album. Not enough original 1960s dust on the mixing desk obviously lol. Another belter of an upload from ScottishTeeVee as well. Nice one.

I find it so strange that when I saw the LA's live, they sounded almost exactly the same as the record that Lee hated so much. I guess it's us, the listener's that got lucky with that one album which will forever be a timeless classic.

I can sense the frustration and boredom of John Power about Lee Mavers' speeches about the sound the record had to get. Not surprisingly, soon after he left the group tired of the perfectionism delusions of Mavers. Sad to see them so annoyed by the sound of one of the most beautiful records ever.
@ryansams1268

The La's is a great shame. They should've been big, but Mavers completely sabotaged any chance of that. They had so much money thrown at them - much more than any new band gets these days. People like Mavers are the reason indie labels get taken over by Majors and why record labels in general don't want to take a chance on a new band.
@ryansams1268

@@Picnicl it's a tragedy that instead of 5 or 6 different La's albums, we only have the one album. What I'm saying is that although most people know the song 'There She Goes' The La's are still pretty obscure. Mavers is largely to blame as instead of seizing the opportunity that was given to him he sabotaged it - recording the same album over and over and then when it did eventually come out he used every opportunity to say how shit he thought it was. That kind of behaviour generally doesn't lead to global success.
@thegoodsgone1965
@thegoodsgone1965 4 года назад
The fact that it's been 30 years since the album came out and Mavers still hasn't released any new material kind of proves that John made the right decision in leaving. As great as Mavers' talent/songs were/are it's pretty pointless if you never release anything.

@@ryansams1268 if there were more people in the world like Mavers at that time we wouldn’t have to put up with all the manufacturerd bullshit that has cluttered the music industry to date.Mavers ain’t no puppet never will be….who wants to here 5 over produced albums driven by greed leading to global success……..unfortunately that’s when music gets lost…..that’s the real TRAGEDY

I don’t understand why he was so critical of the album? When they played live it wasn’t that different and he never released anything else to better express his vision. I wonder now that he’s older he looks back on it and thinks maybe it wasn’t so bad afterall.

I was around 14 years old. At the supermarket, the tapes were protected against theft by large hard plastic cases... you could feel clever if you managed to steal one. I stole this one just because I liked the cover. Since then, it has remained one of my favorite albums.

Mani from the stone roses wrote every single La's song in the 80s. He would finish a song then teach it to Lee Mavers at an open mic night in Widness. Mani never takes credit for this as he is a famously humble and shy individual.
