So apparently the filming of this scene was rushed for some reason, and basically Matt and Alex nailed this scene in one take, which shows how amazing both of them are together, but it also sucks because they really didn't get much time for it to sink in that this was River's last onscreen appearance with 11 and feel proper closure. I think in an interview once somewhere Alex said she was really upset about it and Matt was super pissed off as well. Idk when they filmed the Rain Gods short, whether it was during the TNotD filming or after, but I gotta say I understand why the both of them felt that way. Oh well, here's hoping they get to work with each other again someday as the Doctor and River in Big Finish now that River's got her audio series.
You know, I've seen people say they don't think the Doctor is in love with River and I have to wonder if they've ever paid attention to this scene. It's so fucking beautiful ;A;
Or the entirety of their timeline for that matter. Sure, there's a lot we don't see onscreen but it's constantly hinted at and implied--all the extra time they spend together. The 10 years of time travel together after Amy and Rory die. River spending her days in prison but her nights with the doctor. Little teasers of date nights. And come on, how can you not sense the chemistry that Matt and Alex have in every scene they have together? I hang on to every word in their scenes.
The first time he experienced her kissing him, she grabbed him and he panicked. He eventually had his hands on her arm, but as soon as she pulled him in he started flailing again. This time, he's the one that grabs her. When he notices the others looking at him funny, at first his hands start pulling away, but he then stops himself and keeps holding her face. That is character growth.
I love how obvious is seems (in hindsight) that he can (and has always been able too) hear her. There’s so much emotion there, in his responding-without-directly-responding schtick. He’s talking almost directly to her, and yet doing his best to pretend he’s completely unaffected by it. That man has the hardest time with those he’s closest too, doesn’t he?
What I love about this scene is that it really give me a nice sense of closure. Before then, I felt annoyed because I needed this goodbye and the feeling of moving on. What I also love about this scene is that it really shows how much these two really care for each other, especially how much The Doctor cares for her.
I love that here, this kiss, is at a point where they have both the fullest relationship with each other. Discounting Darillium, this is the only time they’re together when they are fully in love.
My God, this scene blew me away. The most powerful and heartbreaking goodbye I have ever scene in Doctor Who. Btw, Alex and Matt did this scene in one take because the crew ran out of time doing all the prosthetics and make up for the monsters/characters, unbelievable isnt it. 😭
@@valeriek8537 I found it!! Its in this interview..She was answering one of the questions and she says about the scene with one take.. 😉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8IgMtu-FqOQ.html
It just occured to me that River is his wife... she has no problem with him going to resuce another woman, doesn't even ask to be rescued herself, and demands that he look after himself ("be sensible"). True, unconditional love.
River knows trying to stop the Doctor from doing something suicidally stupid is like trying to burn a sun: impossible, so she just asks that he actually do it in a smart way, but sadly The Doctor is a brilliant idiot who only ever has stupid and suicidal plans
Whenever Matt Smith is ever asked about having a favorite co star during his time on the show he always said Alex Kingston and after a kiss like that who could blame him.
I really thought we were never going to see River Song again after "Name of The Doctor" and I was surprised when Alex Kingston came back one last time in "The Husbands of River Song". I love that shot of The Doctor kissing River goodbye at 1:24.
This is my second time to watch doctor who. I start to reconnect everything. 11th was never my favorite. 9th doctor was more human doctor to me as well as 12th. This one, I felt he was just following the 10th doctor’s acting. But second time watching, I think Matt Smith has really done fantastic job. I love this moment very much.
Made a mistake watching this scene while slacking at work, I'm afraid this time I'm gonna get caught because you can't possibly miss a grown ass man fucking crying all over the place.
[Doctor grabs something invisible and stares at a point near it] [Pause] "You're always here to me, and I always listen, and I can always hear you." [Pause] "Because I thought it would hurt too much." [Short pause] "No, I thought it would hurt me. And I was right." [Doctor passionately kisses nothing] [Pause] "Since no one in the room can see that, God knows how that looked." [Doctor glances nervously at the group]
This is a sign of true love. Saying goodbye and letting them go. If you love someone, you will respect, understand them and show how much you love them. My favorite couples.soul mates: Lois & Clark Connor & M'Gann Artemis & Wally Tarzan & Jane Ben & Julie Gwen & Kevin Favorite could have been pairings: Anakin & Ahsoka Leonardo & Karai Bruce & Andrea. Loves gives us strength, happiness and makes us whole. It is also something we hold deep in our souls and our hearts forever....
When I first saw this scene, I wasn't expecting him to kiss her, but when he did I went "Yes, snog it!" cause the Doctor needs a snog now and again...lol
So in this version of reality, where the time lords never interceded and gave the Doctor more regenerations, a piece of River Song’s consciousness in time outlived her digital version and just wandered around Trenzalor for centuries?
hannahtriz it was the first face she knew and was the first one she fell in love with. It would kind of make sense to have that be the last face she visited.
hannahtriz Nope. River encountered the Doctor in this order: 11 (birth to adulthood), then 12 (last date), then 10 (death), and finally 11 in this episode (post-death mental link). From the Doctor's perspective, he met her in all "the wrong order".
In the case of this kiss, The Doctor lunges right on in there….………*queeeeeee* Sorry, but when handsome Doctor lunges after a kiss you know we got some genuine smexy Time Lord shenanigans going on there…still wondering how he is like in the bedroom, River would know, I’d ask her…
Yes!!! The last spoiler from River for the Doctor was about daughter Clara! She directly says that her mental connection with Klara is not accidental, and that the girl is alive. Entering his timeline, he finds out. who is Clara really. And then he finds her, hidden from everyone under the guise of a girl from an ordinary earthly family. He is next to her, watching how she grows, and then takes her with him to the Tardis. Only Clara, after erasing her memory, does not remember anything about her real parents. And the Doctor very gently and for a long time brings her to this truth, this big secret. Impossible girl Clara is his daughter. Look very carefully at all the episodes that follow the "name of the Doctor". There it is hinted several times that she is the daughter of the Doctor and River. Missy said this once, and after leaving the confession disc, the Doctor himself said it when he was with Klara at the monastery. And during a conversation with Aeschilda, the Doctor assures her that Clara is just his friend, to which Aeschilda reacts sarcastically: "and you are ready to sacrifice the Universe just because you just miss her?" In addition, it was said that the hybrid is half human and half time lord. They were talking about Clara, not about Aeschild or the Doctor! Look very carefully, listen, and you will understand who Clara is, and why she is at home in the Tardis, and why the Doctor says to Clara: "my duty is to take care of you." No one wondered why the Doctor was constantly erasing Clara's memory, taking her to Earth to a safe place and hiding her from everyone? Why did he tell her: “It's time to tell you the truth. I'm not your boyfriend, Clara.” And then he tells her that her house is in the Tardis. He also calls her "My Clara". Why? Because she is his Clara, his girl.
