One extremely beautiful thing about this scene is: this is one rare moment when Doctor and River meet and they both know how much they love each other and what they mean to each other. Because River has already met Twelve so she knows, and because it was always clear as a day to Eleven.
I concur that this is beautiful, and that they both know how much they love each other in this scene. However, It was not clear to Eleven for a while. Eleven would flirt with Riversong, but he made it clear he didn't trust her. We also know in The Angels Take Manhattan that they loved each other then as well.
4 years later and it still gets very much appreciated. Ive just watched the whole DW Universe for the first time (well, I am currently done with 12 and not sure if I willl watch 13) but either way I fell for them both & ur comment just sum'ed it up in a perfect way.
11 is the flailing awkward goofy one, too. For HIM to go for a passionate kiss without a bit of awkwardness really shows how much he wanted it. He WANTED it. He was weird with Clara, Jenny, Amy, weird with every woman who showed sexual interest. River? Nuh uh!
@@hothotheat3000 he was so serious and it showed how much he had matured and that he loved river. For me, no other companion relationship is even close to what they had, rose just seemed like 10s girlfriend and that was it, but river was his wife and she is loved by all the doctors incarnations from 11th onwards. Their chemistry was so good, I loved 12 and river but nothing will beat 11 and river for me.
the way he holds her, kisses her, looks at her.. like she is the most precious thing in the universe.. and then the hurt in his eyes when she disappears.. Matt Smith's acting is on point.. You can really feel how the doctor feels while finally giving in his desire to touch her one more time and his pain too.. 😢
"You are always there to me, and I always listen, and I can always see you." I love that 10, 11, and 12 got a chance to say goodbye, but this is my favorite moment for that, despite River being long dead in the scene itself. Having lost my fiancée at 30 (though fortunately finding happiness years later) His words mean a great deal.
this scene always makes me emotional, because it's such a contrast to hello sweetie, because one of river's most iconic lines is hello sweetie, we know river's and the doctor's bond by hello sweetie, and when she says goodbye sweetie, it really really feels like a final goodbye, like their journey finally ending ;((
I can't get over this kiss. It's one of the most loving and passionate kisses I've seen on this show from the doctor. After watching this you cannot convince me that the doctor does not love River. No matter how much time goes by I still obsess over this moment and how tender it is.
Omg the feels!!! Eleven pours his heart into that kiss. Little bit of behind the scenes info.. Matt and Alex were really upset that they had to do this in one take. Alex was truly upset in this scene and really had to fight to stop the tears flowing... That is true emotion you can hear. Makes the scene so much more powerful.
It shows how brilliant Alex Kingston truly is. Did you catch the tears in her eyes as Matt pulls away from her face?? We're not worthy of such beauty. 😭💔😭💔😭💔
@@valeriek8537 She had the perfect moment with her breaking voice and eyes. Screen actors need those eyes to tell the story and Alex Kingston has those unique eyes. I had the honor of 6mins chat with Alex a few weeks ago. She's truly warm and kind as I've seen on convention q&a's. Can't believe I made her laugh when I shared that I binged watched all of NuWho in two months. She asked ME more questions than the one question I managed to ask. If I'm forunate enough of anther chance I'd like to ask which was more fun to play Melody turning into RIver or River not knowing who 12 truly is.
It was all improvised. He didn't really love her at all she tried to kill him. He only married her to appease her, he was travelling with her mother amy for a long time, she came on the scene from the future out to destroy him, I believe he only married her to keep the peace as it was Amy's daughter, had it not been he may have killed her in retaliation
I love that he holds onto her as much as possible. He could’ve released her wrist sooner, could’ve not cupped her face for so long, could’ve not held her hands to his chest. Ugh the small details always get me.
i loved river not only was she beautifl but she was a complete baddass. i wish she had been in the show more. her and the 11th doctor had such great chemistry together
I can understand the doctor not wanting to hurt river, but the one thing I can't understand is why someone is always cutting onions on these River/Doctor videos 😩
If Clara and River's echo are linked and if Clara's adventure spans the entirely of the universe in the endless time between her last two heartbeats, then River's echo could appear anywhere and anytime.
I loved river more than clara clara betrayed the doctors trust river never did she died saving him more than once river is like her father Rory if they love someone they die for them
@@kriegermaria9923 Thank you for your comments. Clara had a good start. Saving the Doctor in his own time stream was probably the high point for the character. I have the impression that River's character was more effectively and consistently written as the episodes progressed. River completely trusted the Doctor, and her loyalty to him was extraordinary.
Philip Tucker Not really, as she said, she was mentally linked with Clara. And well, Clara is dead now. So she stuck there forever, but at least she’s not alone.
@Philip Tucker And also, Clara is technically dead at this point in time. She's both dead and alive. The reason why time is unaffected is because she goes back eventually. It's the same with every time traveler, they are both dead and alive at the same time.
River's story is the most heartbreaking to me because I know and I'm sure that 10 tried to save her, like he does with everyone, but don't fucking tell me he wouldn't try harder if he knew who she was. It upsets me beacuse, yeah, he tried BUT WE ALL KNOW HE WOULD TRIED HARDER IF HE KNEW. It hurts so much because I'm sure she would have made it alive if the Doctor tried enough... but he didn't
He knew about who she was and what she would meant to him. She knew his real name, he took her to Derilum, etc etc. To save her, he disabled the elevator and jumped like a madman just to make it in time. Technically she didn't die, her spirit is still existent inside the Library ;)
@@croumir Years ago, I saw a RU-vid comment that said the library's database eventually stopped working (maybe because the library was destroyed? I don't exactly remember). It could have just been a rumor, but if it's true then River is almost certainly dead (unless there was some sort of backup of the database).
So much love. River was such an amazing character and her an the eleventh doctor had such wonderful chemistry. Matt Smith you ARE the only real doctor to me!
I like how it subtly shows how powerful he really is...he can see and hear, even physically interact with her. Then add the emotion of this scene...simply outstanding. FANTASTIC even!
KGotschall He must have maintained some kind of mind link and we always know he has powers we can’t imagine. Just a bit of his mind almost killed Donna. Anything is possible. All I know is this is one of those scenes that just made River Song’s storyline so much more powerful...at least until the singing towers.
@@RevanJJ What's wrong with the singing towers? A lot of people act like it undercuts the emotion of their last night, but it doesn't in the slightest. Both the doctor and River are practically ageless beings. Compared to the whole of time and space, 25 years wouldn't have been nearly long enough for them.
Triston S Guess you missed my full sentence. “This is one of those scenes that just made RIVER SONG’s STORYLINE so much more powerful...at least until the Singing Towers.” What I meant and most got was after her 23 years there with the Dr, her next stop is the Library where she dies and the 10th Dr uploads her consciousness into the vast library. So I was basically saying it’s very powerful because after this she dies. Capitalization for emphasis not to intend anger or anything. Hope that explains it. :)
“There is a time to live and a time to sleep. You are an echo, River, like Clara, like all of us.” Something about that line made it feel so final. And whilst it’s true, it doesn’t take away from the pain of knowing that these two won’t see one another like this again. This is the only time when both realise how much the other loves them. And that’s the saddest thing…
Not only that, he says her death, like Clara’s, Amy’s and Rory’s, is/are his fault in the end, and he’s not wrong. River died to save him, so that her life and all the adventures she has with him, including falling in love with him, can happen, but that doesn’t erase the guilt of her death, or that her life was a living hell because a group of humans were scared of what he might do in the future so they raised a psychopath to kill him, and that ended up being the daughter of his best friends and making her childhood a living hell. And then Amy and Rory died because he wanted to continue traveling with them, ending up in Manhattan and dying of old age never seeing the Doctor again. Dying of old age after living a happy life doesn’t sound bad, but they also never saw their family or friends again, so that must have hurt, and it’s the Doctor’s fault, or at least he blamed himself for it. As for Clara, he brought her to Trenzalore so he can save his friends, but she jumped into his timestream to save him, leading him to believe she died because the GI died. Honestly, this incarnation is the goofiest, but also one of the darkest, especially at the end
This scene just claws out my heart. The bittersweet good byes, the desperation in the final kiss, and how it breaks the Doctor to let River go, that clings to her even when he knows he has to let go. And then he lowers his face to her level, one last look before says goodbye to his cherished wife. Yeah, this scene was it for me.
0:25 I can't believe they did this in one take. Alex Kingston wanted to do it again but they didn't have the time. I love it that kiss makes me want a cigarette and I don't even smoke.
I feel like it's the last time we see River too... At last, their timelines coincide!! I think it brings closure! They finally had the last kiss and the goodbye they deserved! It's the last time for each of them!
River is one of the characters that can regenerate. I doubt we will ever see the last of her. She will be back, maybe with a new face. or whatever. But a character like that can't die or retire that soon.
I know 10 gets the rep of being the “romantic” but I do think 11 really did love River, at least in his own way. I get they’re all technically the same person, but before 11’s regen he said he’ll always remember being this specific version and I think that’s what it’s like for all the doctors. I really think 10 truly loved Rose and 11 truly loved River.
I'm a total geek for the music, so I had to figure out which song was playing in the background. If anyone was wondering, it's The Wedding Of River Song
Or at least a deviation of the song. Murray Gold likes to use songs over and over for the same character but with little changes to fit the scenes. He's brilliant that way
Felt this in my soul : “You are always here to me And I always listen And I can always see you” I’m getting this tattooed with a mini fading tardis😭💔 Met my soulmate. 11 years ago. He identified with the 11th doctor. Introduced me to dr who. Always said I was his River. “He is my best friend too. He is the closest person to me in this whole world. He is the man I will always forgive, always trust.” I miss him terribly 💔
From the perspective of a husband who has come as comfortably close to losing my wife as I'd ever want to, what sells me on the performance that this is someone he loves is the stillness of his expression and everything being in the way he holds her face and puts it all in the kiss.
anyone who has to live with always seeing and hearing the one they wish to God was there, but really isn't...that is a level of pain and understanding few ever experience. truly well displayed in this scene. tears every time...touches very close to home.
Did y'all see the way he started to remove his hands from her face, and immediately put them right back where they were? He couldn't fuckin let her go ouch my god damn heart
This scene made me very emotional. I thought this was the last time we were ever going to see River Song and I was real surprised when she came for "The Husbands of River Song" the prequel to "Silence in the Library". I like that shot of The Doctor kissing River goodbye at 1:02.
I love that she wants him to "say it like you're going to come back," and that she says "Til the next time Doctor," cuz she knows he'll get to see her again in his next regeneration.
See this is why I was mad river lost all her regeneration I know she needed save the doctor but they could have both stayed together man like I'm sorry I'm being selfish but I keep hoping for more river and doctor episodes fem doctor would be so fun seeing her react to river
Actually, earlier in the episode, right after she speaks his name to open the door, the Doctor glances at her, then quickly away. It's easy to mistake as an error on Matt's part, but instead it's just damn good foreshadowing.
U know what hurts more that's gets me in feels everytime I'm such sucker for it is when river even after being married to him can't understand that he does love her deeply to and if he could he would grow old with her but he knows he immortal and she only human so she not understanding that he loves her for real always assuming that she the only one who get hurt I mean come on river
Rewatching this at the moment and I wish they did more episodes of them on dates like they talk about in their meet ups about what they’ve done together
River Song will always be the love of the Doctor's life! 11 showed us just how much she means to him in this scene!! Matt and Alex were truly something special together!
I just realized... Clara still isn't *really* dead. I'm not sure if it was confirmed that River's mental link with her was completely broken, but... they could still both be floating around out there. I mean, we know Clara is. River is still in the database, and that's where she'll always be, but... well, she is River Song.
I went to watch this again this morning after I heard what Alex Kingston described about this moment behind the scenes during a panel. The actors had to shoot quickly, and Alex and Matt saying goodbye in one take made me more emotional about the story behind this scene.
AGGHHHHHH this scene makes me cry every time. So much packed into so few words and so little time.... AHHHHHHH THE FEELS. Foreshadowing for The Husbands of River Song, it hurrrrrrrrrts.... 😫😫
River'ın Doctor'a olan bakışları hep ilgimi çekmiştir. Kadın Doktor'a öyle bir bakıyor ki sanki dünyadaki en muazzam şeymiş gibi hayran bakışları var. İşte bu yüzden en sevdiğim yoldaş River Song. Doctor'u en çok anlayan yoldaş.
You can tell 11 is steeling himself up to talk to River when she tells him to be sensible. He doesn’t want to acknowledge her because of all the pain and grief he’s felt this regeneration, but he knows he has to in order to get River to accept her death. He had to say goodbye so she can finally sleep, but acknowledging her brings up all the pain of her death and life knowing her hell is because of him, that his best friends didn’t get to raise her because of him, that she sacrificed herself knowing what her life would be because of him. He thought it would hurt too much to acknowledge that, and he was right, but he had to give this goodbye for both their sakes, regardless of the pain
I love this scene a lot I love that he wanted to go after Clara even if he had to go through his own time stream. Also I really like how he got to kiss River one last time it’s obviously that he loved her he just didn’t want to acknowledge her presence because he didn’t want to feel sad that she was gone. He knew she was there because she was an echo that kiss was very very passionate though probably more passionate then their wedding kiss.
