No Laws!? Here, 1,500 squatters congregate in the middle of the California desert without running water, food, and electricity. But how do they live out there?

And that all he knows is cities are “cool” and that the future will bring houses and the concept of property ownership. Ok I’m coming from a bias that education (learning) in its broadest meaning is always good, and certainly this child is getting some kind of education, but he’s also missing out. Has anyone taught him to read? Math? Science?

Went there in June 2021 and December 2021. They say in the winter there are a ton of people but in June I saw way more than in December. December was great though,, June not so much. Almost got robbed just because I drive a nice looking truck and 5th wheeler. Glad I had my 120lbs german shepherd in my 5th wheel when I went to the Range. I also have an attack kitty :) But I was invited to the range just so the others in this group could try to rob me. Not cool.. I loved the free vibe though, just too many drug users for me to want to stay out there longer than a week or two.

I had a family member who lived there for a year and a half. Murders occur pretty frequently despite the tiny population, mainly due to the fact that every other person is a junkie, or psychotic and off their meds. There aren't very many actual "anarchists" that live there, just a few that can tolerate it. Supposedly it wasn't super uncommon for junkies to take their kids with them there, and it always turns into a mess.

I saw her a few days later and she smile and said I was really wasted but got a lot of help. I have a car and before I made my every three day trip to Walmart or to town I made it a point to ask others like Spider, Kas, MoJoe if they wanted to go with if I had room orgive me a list and money and I'll pick up anything for them. @@BangkokJohn It's not that difficult to comprehend why the standard practice of using anonymous sources and - here's the most important part - KEEPING THEM ANONYMOUS exists. It's not some new thing invented by the democrats. It's necessary. For example, just imagine how many more names would be on the "Clinton Body Count" list if journalists and investigative branches outed their anonymous sources? The guy who leaked the Lynch/Clinton tarmac meeting would've made the cut! Also, Despite what Fox tells you both sides are equally guilty of engaging in the 2nd hand "Many people are saying" & "An extremely credible source has told me..." BS whenever it suits them. To imply otherwise is simply hypocritical. In fact, those are both direct quotes from Trump to back up unsubstantiated claims he made about the Left. Not for nothing, but he has yet to produce that "extremely credible" Kenyan birth certificate to this day, btw. What I'm saying is, don't simply accept & regugitate everything you read or hear from right wing biased news sources. Like the biased news sources on the left, they're mainly pushing their own agenda/propaganda and selling it as news. An opinion or accusation doesn't magically become fact just because we may personally agree with it. Anyway, I get the idea that you genuinely care and you seem like a decent dude. So cheers! I had a neighbor who spent a year and a half at slab city in the early 2000's. He had a few hundred polaroid pictures he'd taken while there. He said it was the worst decision of his life to stay out there as long as he did. He knew of 4 murders during his time there and witnessed one when a junkie stabbed an older guy to death. My neighbor said he still had nightmares of the sound the old guy made while he bled to death. Honestly the place is a shithole and I'd never visit there after talking with my neighbor.

No Laws!? It just shows what I often say. There is something much more powerful than the law and that is peer pressure. The first laws were no more than a formalised statement of what the common wish of people considered to be what made the community work, and it was self-enforced by the people. It was only when 'leaders' arose and bent the laws to suit themselves that organised enforcement became necessary. I love anarchy, the real sort, not the punk smash-the state-type. It is the only real form of democracy. If only we could get enough people to understand all this. That's my opinion anyway.

I’ve been camping on my land in the Mojave desert for two weeks in July where it was around 115 every day- man! It was rugged and really fun but I wouldn’t do it again at that time of year. Saving up for a cabin 😜 but I definitely get the appeal of being in a community off grid like that. Mine will have ceiling fans and a well and solar and the creature comforts you need, cause I’m not as rugged as these people- but there’s a tiny community somewhat like this by my land and it’s really cool what people are doing there. A lot of creativity ingenuity recycling, music, stories, art, it’s freeing to visit those friends but I’m still stoked for s cabin with a legit shower. The desert rocks! 🌈🔮

Let me tell you guys a story of my first visit to Slab City and Salton Sea in Southern California. (I wish I had documented this experience.) About 6 years ago my girlfriend had a photography class project with the assignment of capturing time. First thoughts were ice cream melting, a timelapse of the sunset, etc. but I then discovered a video about the Salton Sea. A forgotten boom town from the '50s that had been abruptly deserted due to a disaster of an accidental man-made lake. The aftermath of this town was beyond perfect for my girlfriend's assignment so we decided to hit the road and drive 3 hours to Bombay Beach. As we arrive in this shantytown of literal rubble we were welcomed with long stares from old dirt-caked squatters living in the midst of houses barely standing, the ones uninhabited were basically collapsing on themselves. As we explored Bombay Beach we realized how quickly everyone had left the area. Houses were full of old furniture, moldy couches, family pictures, and toys, it looked as if people had been forced to leave due to some sort of emergency or natural disaster. (definitely post-apocalyptic vibes). Once we capture some amazing images of what time had done to this forgotten town we decided to make our way towards salvation mountain. (in the heart of slab city) to see what this incredible old man had created out of junk and paint. As we drive towards what we thought was salvation mountain we lose a cell phone signal and end up taking a dirt road in a small 2010 honda civic. We approach a "slab" that is covered in graffiti and sprinkled with couches and furniture. Although a cool spot it was not salvation mountain so we decided to head back down the dirt road and find our way towards the mountain. This is when things start to take a pretty interesting turn. As we head back towards the main road coasting through patches of deep sand we suddenly hit a deep spot....the car is stuck...after momentarily digging myself deeper into the sand I get out and start digging, attempting to un-wedge the sand from our tires only causing the car to sink a few inches deeper. This is when we hit borderline panic mode. It's winter, the sun is about an hour and a half from the horizon and we are in the middle of nowhere. I tell my lady to stay in the car and push the gas as I attempt to push and pull the car from all angles. Still...nothing...tires spinning endlessly into the sand. I then see in the far distance a small black single cap truck from the early 90's stop on the side of this dirt road. Two characters get out of the vehicle (one short, one tall) and start launching trash bags of who knows what on the side of the road. This is my only chance, this is my time to ask for help. We needed it desperately. As we approach the two men and I get a clearer image of what they look like I stop in my tracks and tell my girlfriend to get in the car and that I'll take care of this. Why did I stop so suddenly? Well the short man had a long beard grazing the top of his abdomen, some sort of voodoo stick, a worn black cowboy about as weathered as his skin was. The other man was tall, wearing nothing more than a cloth tarp over his genitals, tribal tattoos on his face, and thick dark brown leathery skin. On top of everything they had a dog that seemed fairly aggressive and was barking at me as I walked towards the truck. I introduce myself and inform them of my situation. The first thing they said was quite an odd place to be stuck, isn't it? Yes, it is odd and frightening. Why would they ask a question like this? After explaining what had happened, they kindly join me attempting to push the car out. The half-naked man was pushing from the back as myself and the bearded fellow were digging the tires out and my girlfriend was pushing the gas. This was not working, and they kept talking about needing to get out before dark. After many attempts, they offered to give us a ride to Slab City. to meet their mechanic. So, my lady and I decided to abandon our car and take a ride with these two men. Afterall they turned out to be fairly nice and them attempting to help get us out increased my trust in them. As we approach their car the bearded man tells the naked man to walk home and hes going to drive us to the mechanic. We get into this tiny truck (my girlfriend in the camped back where the seats fold down from the sides, it was a single cab) and hanging from every part of the ceiling was hand made voodoo looking staves and sticks. Wrapped and intertwined with leather rope and rocks, trinkets and other things decorating these staves. Almost like staff like dream catchers which were pretty cool but wasn't sure what he used them for. As we are headed towards the slab city, we ended up receiving a tour guide along the way pointing out various communities one of which was a small teepee made out of tall grass or some sort of weave. The bearded man said "Some faggy guy just moved in right there you see his faggy teepee?" which was quite hilarious to think there's neighborhood drama similar to the suburbs. as we approach the main hub of slab city we see salvation mountain to our right side of the road but we take a left into the community. This community was a series of trailers linked by draping tarps and metal structures. Everything was run down, powered by gas generators and covered in a layer of thick sand dust. We pull up to this metal trailer with a tarp extending out in front of it (as a driveway) where the mechanic would work on cars. We meet the mechanic and his old friend which offered us beers (I took one of course). We say our goodbyes and thanks to the bearded man and start discussing what we need from the mechanic. Basically, he offered his truck to help pull us out of the shit show I got us into for an easy $80. Luckily my girlfriend had pulled money out to buy something along the way but we forgot to purchase it which ended up saving our ass. The two new characters were hilarious, constantly bickering at one another and slapping each other on the back of the head, back and shoulers. Like an old married couple or two best friends that grew up since child hood. Both extremely nice and willing to give us a hand. Long story short they drive us to our car, hook a chain to the honda and pull us out (slightly bending the frame but I was thankful for the help). We made it to Salvation mountain with about 20 minutes of sunlight, an incredible sunset, and the ruins of a beautiful place built by the hands of an man that wanted to spread love. I will never forget this day that opened my eyes and realized you can't always judge people by the way they look. Sharing laughs with strangers that would normally scare the shit out of me was a priceless experience that has forever changed the way I look at the world and the wonderful people that inhabit it.

This video is pretty interesting, I'm glad it showed up in my feed. I once knew a woman who I got my dog from who was really into this kind of lifestyle, and at the time I most certainly wasn't... this was maybe 10 years ago - but now, I can see the reason why people choose this kind of existence. The one thing which always bothered me was when I would come across travelers out here, they would lecture me on how bad I have it by being a part of the system, then they would ask me for a hand out or a ride, and I'd be like forget it - if you are free, then you depend on no one [which is a sentiment I truly believe] That same woman used to accuse me of being trapped, because I was paying a mortgage on a small house [which I've since paid off a while back...] and for a moment, I felt she was right - but now - I bet I have more freedom than she does. This video is amazing... I'm writing this comment as I am watching it. I for one would love to spend some time out in the slabs, just as more of an objective observer.... as I think long term for me it would be too depressing, as it's just a little too polluted for me, and I did not see any water [lakes or rivers], it's so damn hot... and especially if I came across children who seemed lost or as if they seemed to be really missing something [again, I know that's subjective...] But then again, as many commenter's mentioned - each persons reality is very different from one another, and one can travel almost anyplace and see something similar, although not on such a scale as the slabs. I'm glad I watched this. Maybe one day I will make it out there............... I for one hope it stays in the hands of the people living there forever.

@Old Luke I'm not putting down what your perspective is... But in all honesty.. If you look at the millions of people working 10hour days, and in China over half the population are working 12+hour days 6 days a week.. To just survive.. And in our Western world middle class and upper-class families work and argue, fight over pathetic things.. And the "lowerclass" have benefits breadline life hanging over them paycheck to paycheck, while the homeless are seeking benefits while addicted to medications originally prescribed... And a school system which is not teaching kids what REAL life is? Just systemising our youth, meaning the future generations are perpetuating and living the same issues... In a broken system, run by out of touch individuals, and groups with a know it all agenda, poisoning the food chain with chemicals... Processed crap, and dividing our countries through politics and religion. So.. Has this kid really been born into poverty? Maybe his child hood is positively more peaceful than 80%+ of the worlds population... It will become increasingly so rare in the future for a child to actually have a simple care free open air child hood.. Without the system sucking them up. Maybe poverty is a perspective.. Maybe we are in poverty in our own way. Maybe the children crawling around in the slums of India. Or the sex slaves in slums and buildings at part of the world are the ones in poverty. Peace brother:). Just a thought share for ya :)

@Old Luke well, as someone who's tried arguing a better future with people who have the means to make that difference.. Pass platform 9 and 3 quarters hahaha that's just the silly divide world going on behind the scenes. Times an illusion... The elites and "game players" need to help humanity by worshipping nature, not their patented hybrid stuff which they're trying to make everyone eat from birth.

@Old Luke Lack the pedigree? They're not dogs, they're kids. Not all kids fit in to the one-size-fits-all education system, not all kids learn the same, and not all parents want their children trained like dogs so they can be well oiled cogs in the machine. From a few seconds of filming you've deduced that this child is not cared for or given attention and lacks pedigree (whatever that means)? Not sure you should be teaching any children with views like that, certainly wouldn't want you teaching my son, his dad didn't come with breeding certification to show his pedigree.

@Old Luke Wow, so now you are assuming from a very short clip that the child in the video is a product of incest? Cool dude.

Homeless camp in the desert. People like the ones in Slab City are now moving into the cities and essentially doing the same thing.

I've been to towns with a cop that drives through once a week from an hour away and there's virtually no crime, we have allowed ourselves to be over policed to the point that people want to live in the middle of a concrete desert to get away!
