The Last of Us | Episode 5: "Endure and Survive" - Spoiler Review 

One of the best episodes of TV I’ve seen in a long time. The “sinkhole” scene followed up by the Henry/Sam scene. Man. What a 1-2 punch.

Henry and Sam were done perfectly. Great episode. They did an excellent job of adapting the sniper segment of the game too.

5 episodes down. I have literally cried at least once in every single episode. 3 was the one I cried the most. In my 44 years this has never happened to me. I guess it comes down to getting older and watching something with amazing story telling and acting.

That bloater had me cheering as if I was in a superbowl, my favorite episode by far.

Before I watch this video, that was my favorite episode and retroactively made episode 4 better, THIS SERIES DOESN'T MISS

I was unfamiliar with Lamar Johnson (Henry) but was incredibly wow’d by his performance. In particular that final scene. Stuff like that in shows or movies are so dependent on talented writers and actors and he absolutely nailed it. Hard to get emotional with characters just introduced, but I absolutely felt CRUSED in that moment. Bravo to everyone in that episode and scene in particular.

They adapted everything so well for a TV show. My favorite of the series so far!!

Loved it. But one big missed opportunity was adapting the part from the game where the team gets separated in the tunnels, forcing Joel to get paired with Sam while Henry gets paired with Ellie. In the aftershow, Craig Mazin talked about how Sam's death re-ignited a fear in Joel, forcing him to face the probability that he may also lose Ellie in the same way that Henry just lost his brother. But the addition of the tunnel separation scene would have really hammered this home, as we'd watch Joel have to protect Sam from danger, then later watch that same boy he just protected die at the end of the episode, giving him a more tangible reminder of what it feels like to fail another child (and himself) in that way. Not to mention, it would have been quite endearing to see how Joel tries to communicate with Sam, when he doesn't know sign language.

Kathleen didn’t just get taken out by a clicker, it was a CHILD clicker, karma for choosing to kill Ellie & Sam

I was already in tears watching the flashbacks of Henry and Sam so when we got to that ending, I was bawling my eyes out. I needed to go lay down due to all that depression that hit me. It was an amazing episode still and I got excited for the bloater scene but man, I got too emotional with Henry and Sam due to the extra dialogue and backstory we got 😢 I remember stopping the game right after that scene to take a break when I first played it. It was so shocking and heart breaking. I thought I was prepared for the show but it hurt even more 😅

Holy shit this show is almost perfect. My only complaint is I wish it were 12 episodes instead of 9, because I just want more of it!

I like the way Kathleen’s ending was because they allowed you to see that her need for revenge overtook her so much that she let her guard down against the infected around her and ended up being her downfall leading to her death.

The kid clicker was so fucking cool, the way it twisted and contorted around seats and was tons faster than an average one was a really cool new infected concept.

I didn’t cry in episode 3 but I did cry in this episode. Poor Sam and Henry. I knew it was coming and it still didn’t prepare me.

This was the best episode of the show so far. At the end of each episode I just sit on my couch for at least 20 minutes in awe

the emotional scenes in this show is breaking me worse than the games. didn't think that would be possible but my god.

Ellie’s acting was so good in that Henry scene. It was so genuine

Like… I knew already what was going to happen with Sam but it still got me 😭 😭 🤧 I was bawling like a baby, it was like Sarah all over again.

Another great episode! Having not played the game nor have seen the marketing, everything is a surprise and it’s a great lens to see it through. Loved the infected coming out of the ground, completely caught me by surprise as did Sam attacking Ellie. Didn’t think it was going to take that turn.

Awesome how the show's Bloater performed all the kill animations from the game.

Ish’s story would’ve made for a great cold open to the episode.. otherwise, what an awesome episode this week. I was completely enthralled the whole time.

This entire episode rocked me to my core.

I love that the bloater did the in game kill cutscene animation to Kathleen’s right hand guy . I caught it when it was panning out and it made me smile seeing that animation on screen 😂

This episode was all kinds of awesome....that big action sequence near the end was absolutely perfect

That was probably my favorite episode so far. Henry and Sam hit just as hard and I loved the easter eggs with Ish and the recreation of the bloater death animation

I think the scene with Ellie trying to help Sam was less about the childhood innocence of thinking "oh, my blood is medicine" and moreso a misunderstanding of how the infection works (the show once again reinforcing that Cordyceps is not a 'zombie virus' that can be spread through fluids like blood) -- that also thematically is meant to play into weakening Ellie's faith that whatever happened to her is actually going to be a cure for mankind -- and that's why she leaves the "I'm sorry" message on Sam's grave.

Sam asking Ellie to stay up with him is absolutely heartbreaking. Damn, I didnt think it could get more F×××ed up than the game but man!

I admit that I know nothing about the games but that didn't stop me from wanting to watch this show. Sarah's death in the first episode broke my heart but that was almost nothing compared to Sam and Henry. I'm surprised at how much I am enjoying this show. Good stuff!

Dam that was great television. Wasn't sure how much they would follow the game this episode. Given how they changed Bill and gave him a much happier ending I thought they might do the same with Henry and Sam. But nope. Very dark depressing ending for them. Same as the game actually. But really loved this episode. Great review Cody.

Coming across The Bloater in the game will be something I'll remember tell I die. I couldn't be happier got that feeling again like I did the first time.

Cody, I’m thoroughly enjoying this and I’ve never played the game. The only thing I hope to get is some back story to Ellie before being in the DZ. So far episodes 4&5 have been my favorite with 3 right behind. This and your reviews each week just may get me to buy the games. Keep up the great work cause the insight is been helpful big time with the details and small things that separate these two.

Great review. One thing missed which I really like...Joel's clear reluctance to kill the sniper and his reaction when the man left him no choice. I loved that because that shows that Joel isn't totally kill-crazy

I think we can deduce that the horde is indeed the people from the tunnels since the clicker that gets in the car with ellie is cleary a child Also Joel alludes to the fact that the people who lived in there probably did not follow the rules.

I know what you mean with the Ish storyline. I’d love it if eventually they did a TLOU spinoff show where each episode told a different group or persons story within this world, but I’m not sure if that’s likely.

For me, the reminder of the classroom children was the child clicker that went after Ellie in the SUV and eventually took out Kathleen. Great episode.

I thought a really cool Easter egg was when the bloater killed Jeffrey Pierce(the guy that voices Tommy) it kills him in the same way the bloater kills you in the game

I am not a game player by any means so I had no idea what to expect by the end of this episode, but when I tell you I was bawling with such pure emotion from being so immersed into this story. I have never felt such an attachment to a series or set of characters. Such a beautifully & well written series with an amazing cast to carry it out. Can not wait to see what's to come.

Setting up the thesis for both the ending of season 1 and major plot line of season 2/3 coming.

I agree with you Cody, missed opportunity with the Ish storyline, other than that, brilliant episode…Henry and Sam were cast perfectly…I loved the fact they used a deaf actor to play Sam. Episode puts you thru the hurt locker, starts off with glimpses of hope, leads to sheer terror, ends in complete despair for Henry and traumatizing for Ellie and Joel. Happy we got to see a bloater finally, and seeing the death animation in the background.

Amazing episode. Again the changes from the game all worked. I did feel Henry and Sam were rushed a tad but damn this episode was great.

This was the first time the show made me cry. What a fantastic episode. They really compressed a lot of the game but in a way that made perfect sense for the adaptation. The actors playing Henry and Sam were phenomenal, 11/10 if such a score existed, this felt exactly like the game to me!

The blotter introduction was bad ass

Cody man I’m worried that things are going to get fast forwarded too much in these last 4 episodes. Are we not going to get to see the Dam section or the University/College section ? There’s only 4 episodes left. I also saw on IMDB that the actor who plays the character ‘David’ is only in 1 episodes which I pray to god isn’t true. He’s the best villain and if they give that chick Kathlyn 2 episodes and David only 1 I’ll be livid.. I still love the series so far so I agree with you for the most part.

I am loving this show. I was kind of bored with the third episode, but last week’s and certainly this week’s episode really is showing how fresh a zombie apocalypse can be again. Makes me very curious to play the game, but I am an Xbox player….

I end up with "None of Your Business" stuck in my head after every Cody video 😄

They wanted to do a full episode on what you wished they touched upon in the optional story that is in the game but it didn’t work out. I found that interesting

The sniper scene was my favourite in the game, especially when Joel had to shoot at the tank, then the soldiers, then the infected to save Ellie, Sam and Henry.

Weird how the same scene, adapted differently gave me emotions at different moments. The scene of Henry having to shoot his brother is so devastating in the game when he starts to get angry at Joel as you know he is blaming himself actually. Spin around to the show, the scene itself did not strike me emotionally, but when Ellie wrote the “IM SORRY” note. That hit me, as someone who is Ellie’s age should not feel the guilt of witnessing death and thinking she caused it. Whether it’s directly or indirectly. Joel’s moment of shock and pause on the note, just reinforced that feeling as he notices Ellie is struggling inside. Weird how the same story with similar actions(in the end) has different ways of provoking emotion from the audience and the fans.

There’s no reason they can’t go back and make a stand alone episode about Ish and Danny. There’s always the possibility we get it as a special episode. So maybe it’ll happen

I swear I stopped breathing for the entire sniper section and the moments after Ellie wakes up and finds Sam..so basically I am dead now. But for real though the actors portrayed the parts of Henry and Sam so perfectly.

Thought episode 2 was the best NOT anymore this entire episode amazing and the last 15 min holy shit 10/10 idk how u top this was awesome

Great episode but Sam and Henry was way too rushed. Kathleen was also just a waste of screen time that could have been given to sam and Henry but none the less great action and love the upped gore

Every week I ask how can it get better and every week it shows me how, now I just have to wait a few extra days for the next episode which sucks!

The only thing I didn't like about this episode was the plot armor that the main characters had (especially Ellie) during the infected attack.

Incredible episode. Every episode has been a knockout for me so far but this one blew me away. The sequence with the infected, clickers and bloater was insane. The story arc for Henryvabd Sam was even sadder in the series

I didn't really play the game, so I thought Henry would be the infected one. I thought he'd hide it, they'd get to Wyoming, the truth would come out...

This series is perfect 10/10. It's perfect. The acting, perfect. The WRITING, perfect.

My fox this episode was absolutely epic, just off the infected scene alone! I haven’t been actively excited about a show since the ending of dexter (the original, which I could take or leave). Anyone got any thoughts on where this season will end? I’m hoping they make it to the cannibal camp. I know there’s gonna be a second season, but I want to see Ellie go HAM on David.

Maybe TLDR but, This episode solidified what is making this show work so well. As a gamer fan we may have been wondering why is there not enough emphasis on joel and ellie? But, To a non gamer they should get that joel and ellie are the focal point, while the supporting characters help build out the world, while their stories also give us insight into joel and ellie's characters. But, once again, for the gaming fans, we are well aware of joel and ellies story, so the expansion of the side characters is like a big ass cherry on top of a delicious sundae. Its a tight rope they are walking perfectly. So much more enriching for fans of the game, while losing nothing for the casual viewer. My only complaint is the ending of this episode could have been stretched out by a few more minutes to harden the impact. Overall, no complaints. It is shaping up to be better than I ever would have thought possible.

I agree on the ish point, they could have done something special there especially because they seemed to be fedra. The hunters story line didn’t do anything for me. Perry doesn’t do much then dies and Kathleen was never believable. It took up a lot of time basically just to add context to Joel’s actions later. Two episodes to add context to an action at the end of the show is a bit much.
