One thing that goes unspoken about Joel’s reaction to Tommy’s baby news is that he still holds a grudge against Tommy because Tommy was the reason he wasn’t home when his daughter needed him. They probably could of escaped had Joel been able to leave sooner. I think that comes through in this episode really well.
the university part was a million times better in the game from roaming the labs and finding the recordings to Joel getting injured to Ellie having to shoot while Joel is bleeding out and struggling to walk. It felt so rushed in the episode
Pascal’s performance in this episode felt so raw and real. He is beyond terrified of reliving the trauma of losing his daughter. That terror and panic really comes through.
The ailment he has where he has to stop, im fairly sure are panic attacks. He’s finally opening up because of Ellie and everything he’s done even before Ellie is hitting him.
Agreed. His “heart issues” cease after he gets real rest and decides to take Ellie. If the writers and producers wanted it to be actual heart problems, Tommy would’ve given him meds to ratchet up the tension, and/or he would’ve collapsed from a heart attack after snapping the cannibal’s neck.
Just finished the episode and wow now I gotta say I’m liking the show more. Pedro’s Pascal is an actor that is really growing on me and is a fantastic character actor. Though it’s slower, it’s a great and I love the dynamic between Joel and Tommy. I also love the dynamic between Joel and Ellie a lot more this time :)
Episode 6 so far is my favorite episode. I loved Joel's emotional moments especially how he was still dealing with Sarah's death of how he had emotional panic attacks and how he imagined how Sarah would have a kid if she was still alive. I loved seeing Tommy again and seeing Maria for the first time I loved how Joel is seeing Ellie as a daughter and doesn't want to lose her and when Joel gets stabbed it was emotional and I loved how Ellie is slowly starting to really care about Joel. I give episode 6 a 10/10. I'm excited for episode 7
Absolutely love this show to the point at least once a week I binge watch every last of us spoiler review you've done. I love hearing your excitement for the show and it helps me get through my workday.
Pedro peaked as Joel in this episode, i thought he was doing a good job from episode 3 onwards but in this one during the argument with Ellie he sounded exactly like Joel from the game, the voice was perfect.
Sorry to hear you’re sick man, was waiting for this video once I finished the episode last night but I understand you couldn’t get this out! Love these reviews, here’s my thoughts: The introduction of Tommy and his group was so much more interesting!! I loved the snow setting, and the university! I liked how they changed how Joel got impelled with him getting stabbed instead. All the dialogue was a W too! Oh and seeing Dina and Shimmer was the cherry on top.
This was my favorite episode so far. I’ve been looking forward to THE scene this whole time. And yeah it got me crying. So well done. The acting is just unreal
Great episode once again. Agreed on the University story line. All it took was one look and you could tell everyone had moved on. All we really needed was the map to sum up all of the searching for clues presented in the gameplay.
You had me worried and I was checking everywhere to make sure you didn’t sneak this video out, but hope you get to feeling better man! As always another great video
So apparently Joel having anxiety is canon to the game, it just isn't very prevalent in the game. I guess if you explore Joel's room as Sarah in the beginning, you'll find anxiety meds somewhere.
The acting in the series has been soooo good so far, but in this episode it was just breath taking, Pedro's subtle facial changes when he hears Sarah's name and Bella's portrayal of heartbreak and desperation at the end. Just amazing.
Phenomenal episode.. the drawbacks to the game, the performances by Bella and Pedro, the way they shot the scenes the camera work, the character development, the emotion, the excitement, the disappointments that joe, Ellie, tommy endure throughout the episode was all phenomenal work. These characters d*mn sure know how to portray the characters we know n love.
I did like the episode it really showed how Joel and his brother started on different paths and now are on opposite points in their lives. Just hated the ending cause it was a cliff hanger
So far, this is my 2nd favorite episode. So many Easter eggs for the 2nd game. Daniel Luna is also perfect as Tommy. Can’t wait to get more of him in season 2. Just sucks that we have to wait!
I for one wish there were 10-15 more minutes to spend at the university and have some sort of firefight before Joel Ultimately gets injured and to have Ellie escort him out having to protect him from raiders as he is bleeding on the way to the exit and their horse. It's one of the most tense moments in the game and it was so short in the show that the impact just wasn't there for me, although Bella Ramsey did a great job in the very last scene portraying the desperation of Ellie potentially losing Joel. Still a great episode I would rank them like this so far: Ep 4. 7/10 Ep 3. 8/10 Ep. 6 8/10 Ep. 2 9/10 Ep. 1 9/10 Ep. 5 10/10 Really looking forward to the last 3 episodes!
next week is the dlc, then week after is winter section from the game and final episode is spring. honestly, pretty well spaced out final three episodes. exact pacing from the game story wise.
One of the marks of a good show is that, even though I KNOW Joel won't die, I'm concerned about his fate. Barring exceptions like the upcoming GoG vol 3, there's no sense that anything really bad will happen to an MCU protagonist no matter how much is thrown at them.
Mr Leach can you confirm the last episode is 43 minutes? And if so is it a satsifying finale I have heard other rumors say it is 2 hours lol? I wish it was that long I guess as long as every minute counts haha
one of the complaints people generally seem to have with the story is that there is to much emotion shown. Not only by Joel but also other characters. That is pretty weird and , to me, shows the lack of understanding the medium. I LOVED the game, I LOVED the characters, but if you look at that and this series and think they go to fast.... well go watch the game. This episode gave me the same feels as episode 4 with all the game dialogs and they are really REALLY setting up everything for the final climax AND the 2nd season. Everything that you didn't get in the game is in the series. The game shows Joel just suddenly saying to Tommy to get Ellie to the fireflies. It's never discussed really well what happens until you meet Ellie again in the game. But the emotions that Joel shows here are SOOOOO important to show what he is going through. Joel is NOT a hero, he is not a tank but he is a Human trying to survive and keep those he cares about safe. He is basically the guy who always says "I rather do everything myself so i know it happens my way" but in this episode he breaks and has to accept he his way isn't always working out so well. Really well done by Bella to nail down Ellie yet again. Everything felt amazing and even though there is so much , what you could call, "fanservice" it is by no means inserted as that. everything that comes directly from the game is so much more aimed at flashing out the the characters like in the game then just being there for the gamers. Can't wait to see this ending now. I just know they will make it hit so much more harder then the game
Good review! I liked this episode the most. Though one gripe is Ellie is too mean compared to her game counterparts. Bella is great in the role though.
I feel like they are making Joel out to be a villain with his past. I guess a tragic hero maybe too? But I feel like they are doing this to show the viewer that he won't be the main character forever, which is sad. When he dies it's going to be very hard for me to continue watching. Joel to me is way better than Ellie and has such a better story to me. BOTH are great, he's just slightly higher in my eyes. Also, Bella just isn't doing it for me in her portrayal of Ellie. She's just a dick the entire time. Not sympathetic at all and very rude. In the game you actually feel compassion coming from Ellie. That scene where they argue in the bedroom from the game, it hit really really hard. Even Troy Baker's "Ellie! You're treading on some mighty thin ice here..." was so powerful. God I miss that! You just don't see that coming from Pedro and Bella. It seems like they are coasting along with their dialogue at times. Also, they are cutting way too many things out of this game. Not enough action and tension. Still a great show, but wish they would show more and drag this season out, making season 2 the ending of Part 1 and leading into Part 2 from the game.
I’m truly hoping they start cranking up the action and tension, in the remaining 3 episodes, cause the show seriously needs it at_this_point. I’m actually kinda baffled because of how LITTLE the series digs into the games HORROR-aspects. It’s almost entirely non-existing in the show.. When I look back at episode 1 now, it had everything. Drama, tension, horror.. Since then it’s been almost entirely lacking and it’s truly a shame. I still really like the shows dramatics, writing and characters. It’s not the stuff we’re getting, that I have a problem with. It’s all of the stuff we’re NOT getting (at this point).. Also, 9 episodes begins to feel like not being enough, especially if it’s true about the just 43 min. finalé. We’ll see.
With the finale only being 46min and the fact next episode is covering left behind dlc, I feel like it’s being rushed. University definitely felt rushed. The season could have used 12 episodes.
It’s a really good show but I can’t help but feel like this show cuts out way too much. I mean, there is hardly ever any infected in this show. It’s not like that was ever the focal point of the game but it’s like they’re just basically making a show of all the cut scenes.
I haven't played the game tho I have seen clips. Not sure who this movie is meant for. It's not a horror movie but it does have a few scary moments. I guess it is an ok movie designed for the TV watching crowd. What confuses me is to why would Maria give 14 year old Ellie a diaphragm for birth control? Is there a lot of child sex going on in that compound? Is there a rape problem occuring? If Joel has been around the block more than once, didn't he know enough to NOT pull out the "stabby device" from his stomach? And how is it that "Florence" stayed so fat given society's current situation? There is no point in me watching any further episodes. It's all one big blah.
I understand the view and nostalgia from those who've played the game. But as someone who hasn't played the game and is just watching the show, it's somewhat overhyped. It's good but yeah reviewers (who've played it) propping it a bit much.
I think it gets a lot of extra points just for copying the game - which means nothing to those of us who have no interest in the video game and never played it. Also, a lot of these reviewers got early access. Makes you wonder if they were made to sign something. You know.
I enjoyed every episode except for episode 3 because none of that episode was in the game & why build extra story for characters that don't even progress in the game or in storyline in further chapters You can skip that episode & wouldn't even matter
Also @codyleach I like your channel and reviews for the show even though I don’t completely agree with your love for the season so far but You have been saying the calm before the storm and the last episode before shit goes down since episode 2 lol the action has been very underwhelming
I love the adaptation from the game to the show it’s been great but honestly the action sequences and infected has been very underwhelming. It’s honestly ruining the show for me. I get them trying to tell the story and flushing out the characters but the action and intense moments in the game are very important for the viewer to really understand the hell these characters have gone through and this post apocalyptic world just hasn’t felt dangerous. The Henry episode was the best so far but even that episode didn’t reach its full potential. Also the chapters have felt a bit rushed, this story definitely needed to be more than 9 episodes. More like 12-15
Didn't care for this one first out of all of them I know it was very dialogue game heavy but still idk didn't care 4 it and next week it looks like it's gonna be a flash back episode I think the last 2 episodes are gonna be crazy after that tho
I think this episode was one of those ones where there's barely any action and yet it's still great, I do hope as unlikely as it is we see another bloater.
At 4:07 ellie isn't infected. That's the point of her being immune. When she got bitten her body fought of the infection. The dog not smelling it was an indication of that and also infected still try to attack her. The scanner the soldiers used in the first episode and in the game coming up positive when they scanned her is a mistake as it wouldn't of detected the infected.
Because the actress probably auditioned better than everyone else. Because she was in True Blood so she was already on HBO's radar. It made no difference whatsoever and she did a great job. I am excited to see more of her in season 2. Making this comment was so unnecessarily stupid.
