I feel like we all had that moment, whether it was abby and ellie near death almost killing each other, or Ellie's lost fingers keeping her from playing Joel's song. The scene on the porch or the duet with Ellie and Joel, eventually all the emotion catches up, and we break down. For me it was when Ellie said that she'd try, it changed everything for me and I broke down. What we first thought were cold vengeful motives, we now realize were hopeful, forgiving motives that were shattered nearly as soon as they were made.

My Main Theory: Ellie is living in Jackson with Dina, JJ, and Jesse's parents. Why: During the farmhouse section of the game, while carrying around JJ, we find a note on the table from Jesse's parents, saying that there will quote, "Always be a place here in Jackson for You, Ellie, and JJ." showing that Ellie would always have a home. Next, before heading to Santa Barbara(at the farmhouse) and during the Santa Barbara section of the game, and Ellie's fight with Abby, Ellie is not wearing the bracelet that Dina gave her in Seattle. If you check Ellie's backpack, the bracelet is not in her backpack, proving that Dina still has it. But when it cuts to her at the farmhouse, having returned, with no time frame of how long it has been, she is indeed wearing that bracelet again... showing that Dina gave it to her after she returned home from fighting Abby again. Which Dina wouldn't have done if she'd been done with, or abandoned Ellie. Another thing, notice that Ellie has nothing on her in her "return". No guns, no arrows, no gun holsters, no anything. Just her backback. If Ellie had just returned from a long trip back home, you'd think she'd still have those things on her. Right? So I believe that Ellie left Jackson that day, to either go for a walk, or purposely return to the old family home to retrieve her guitar. Another hint at this, is that there was no note left by Dina, for her return. If Dina loved Ellie as much as she seemed to, she would have left a note for her, amidst her return, telling her where she was or that she had moved on with JJ by herself. Ellie than trys to play the guitar one last time, prompting a more positive flashback of Joel. One, of them talking on a more positive note the night before he died. After the flashback, she leaves the guitar in the farmhouse and heads off the property into the woods. So I believe that she realized, that if she truly wanted to be happy and move on with Dina and JJ, she would need to move on from Joel and his memory. And so leaving behind the one thing she had left of him to hold onto (the guitar), she's leaving her brutal, revenge filled past behind her. To truly move forward in her life with Dina and JJ. So this, her walking into the woods, is not her losing everything, or going out on her own. But simply her returning home to her wife and child. Who in my opinion/theory, she returned to after the final events with Abby, and has been back with them for a significant period of time. And therefore the closing events of the game, take place after she had reunited with her family. Not before. Leading to my conclusion, the Ellie made up with Dina and is living happily with her in Jackson

In the video back at the farm house when Ellie returned, it started by showing her missing fingers and the empty farm house, empty cold rooms meaning that Ellie is back but the life she turned away from in her vengeance will no longer be the same as when she left. Missing fingers, empty farm house, a completely different Ellie strongly implies that she has to restore broken relationship or find herself a new purpose in order to be fullfilled like help with a cure by returning to fireflies which would correlate with Abby`s ambition of what her father wanted to achieve. In any case Dina had moved on with or without Ellie and highly doubtful that she would share Ellies view on that she would not change her mind and leave again...

Here's my take: The hatred that Ellie feels towards Abby is an externalized reflection of the hatred Ellie harbors for herself. Why? Well Joel deeply hurt both Abby and Ellie in different ways and they both punished him for it. Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially because she didn't get a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a mirror because Ellie also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I'd say in a way that was more painful for Joel, and that was by disconnecting from him. She hates herself for torturing him like that and not restoring their relationship when there was still time. That's the real pain she has been trying to avoid facing during this entire revenge quest, she's like a drug addict using revenge to avoid dealing with those painful feelings of regret. This is the realization she has while she is drowning Abby when she has the flashback to the scene on the porch with Joel and chooses to spare Abby. She's not just forgiving Abby, she's really most importantly forgiving herself and finally coming to terms with what happened between her and Joel, I think her leaving his guitar to rest in the house and walking away is supposed to symbolically represent that she has forgiven Joel, made peace with what happened between them and is finally ready to move on and start a new life. I hated the end at first but after much deliberation I think it's actually really poetic. People saying the game is just about "revenge is bad" I think have really missed the point.

You shouldn't look at it that way. Before she forgave Abby she was alone, her anger was consuming her and she was hurting the people around her. The game ends on a hopeful note, she is on a path of redemption. She has a purpose again. Not to say that you should interpret the ending in a specific way, but the ending isn't hopeless. I'm starting to replay the game again, and I honestly think its main ambition was to leave the player hollow, empty, and broken by the end of it. I don't think it was made for you to love it; it was a game that was made to make you experience hatred, not necessarily for the game itself but for the injustice of certain actions and its universe's cruelty. I hate what it made me feel, but I don't hate it for what it is. This game is 100% an emotional experience, I don't think there's any other game that has left me reeling by the end as much as this. This game is not meant for everyone, and by this I mean the way the game has been handled is equivalent to marketing some dark, intense Oscar nominee movie to a general audience. Sure, the storyline could be amazing, but the themes and nuances are bound to be lost to some people who are looking for a simple story, thereby resulting in backlash. For example, take the movie Shape of Water. There's bound to be people who would just reduce it to a "bestiality story about a woman fucking a fish", when perhaps there could be a lot more meaning to it. There's a reason why blockbuster movies usually have simple, easy-to-understand-and-accept stories, and the thing is, the Last of Us Part 2's story was not meant to have universal appeal in that sense, thereby resulting in the critics-and-users opinion divide. The mass majority of critics love it because it has a very artistic approach to traditional storytelling, while the playerbase is a lot more divided because again, this is not your everyday story. And for me personally, I actually thought this game was great.

So, my Sensei died a few months ago. Out of nowhere, sudden, just as that. And he was just 53. I still can't process it. I spent a lot of time crying, thinking about the amazing times we had together. He was my mentor, my friend, he was family. Hours, days, months, years of training together on the tatami. He was the one who teached me my first lesson of skiing, he was the one showing me the coolest pc games, the one who was fun but also strict in training. He was the one I could talk to about so many things. He was there for me on every birthday and man, we had so much fun even when we were not drinking. He guided me for 17 years. He was like a second father for me and I felt that everytime he was there for me when my father was away (he works in a foreign country). I was so overwhelmed with pain. I pushed away my family, focused only on the past. I wanted to get a tattoo to remember him even if I love my skin and I am always pro natural looks. I was obsessed with the idea of getting that tattoo. I visited his grave on my birthday. I felt better, being at peace for a moment. And I realised I dont need the tattoo. It wouldn't change anything. I dont need it to remember my Sensei. How could I ever forget? I thought of Ellie and Joel as I was sitting there. His wife gave me his favorite watch. It's broken. Like Joel's. I cryed so bad. And I felt like Ellie fighting Abby in the end. I finally let it go. It still hurts. But I have to live here and now. My family loves me. And I am honored to watch over my Sensei's kids. Live here and now, guys! Dont live in the past.

Sorry but you're wrong there buddy. You should have creative liberties, but it is ultimately about the player. This game was good when it came to dialog and superb in gameplay. SPOILERS!!! The story of this game actually hit really hard for me. I somehow didn't see any spoilers before the game came out and replayed the first one the day before part 2 was released -- So I went into it fresh -- Seeing what happened to Joel was truly heartbreaking, but I feel that was the point. That's exactly how Ellie felt in that moment, it's those emotions of hatred and injustice that propels the story and the characters. At least for me, I experienced the first half of the game through Ellie's eyes. Going around Seattle looking for any Wolves I could find and getting retribution for Joel. Just like Ellie I wanted to find Abby and kill her for what she did to Joel. I was so angry and honestly hated the character. But when the game switched gears and the second half came around -- Playing as Abby was an interesting journey. I wasn't too into it at first, but after she goes around the Wolf base talking to everyone, it was as if the game was forcing you to meet these people that you had just brutally murdered as Ellie. See the world through their eyes. Everybody's the hero of their own story, right? I found them all to be quite interesting and fun. Especially Manny. I'm not sure why. Even down to throwing the dog toy for Alice. I was coming around to Abby a little bit more. Then it showed that her father was the doctor that Joel killed, I really started to empathise with her a lot. Imagine what it would be like to find your father murdered brutally whilst he was trying to save the world. Then the whole plot with Lev was almost mirroring the first game. Joel had become Abby and Ellie was now Lev. The story beats are even vaguely similar, like the loss of Tess becoming the loss of Yara and the two characters growing to really care about each other. Then it was both moving and uncomfortable to return to the aquarium and find Alice, Owen and Mel dead. After spending so much time with them, I had grown attached. I never fully forgave any of them for Joel's murder. But it was smart by showing that they had lost Abby's father to Joel, so they were doing exactly what Ellie is doing -- Getting revenge for a loved one -- Realising that Ellie killed these characters was kinda tough considering it was actually me, the player carrying out the act of murder. The game was showing that there is a serious consequence to violence. I can totally understand why people would be mad at the story, Joel dying so early on is kinda a bummer, but this was Ellie's story and he had to deal with the consequences for murdering the entire Firefly base and stripping the world of a cure. The world of the Last of Us is similar to the real world in many respects. Shit happens. People die. And it's not always fair, in fact most of the time it isn't. It depicts the cycle of violence extremely well, after going around hiding from either Wolves or Serephites, learning about the differences and the similarities, both sides scandalise the other for being needlessly violent. Then that scene on the scar island on the horse/boat when Abby and Lev are escaping and the music swells and you just see Wolves and Serephites brutally murdering each other -- The idea of factions disappears and I just saw Humans killing Humans for no real reason. It was fucking powerful. With everything that's going on right now, the protests and the riots, George Floyd... I think it was a really topical game in many respects. As for the TWO protagonists of the game, I think it's really interesting to show the story through both Abby and Ellie's perspectives, they're two sides of the same coin. Both acting not out of a psychotic need for violence and murder, but for the justification of their loved ones. In both cases, their fathers. Sure Joel isn't Ellie's REAL dad, but fuck it, he is. The final boss battle was kinda gut wrenching, because I had become so invested in Abby and I didn't want to see her die, however she killed Joel and I completely empathise with Ellie's need for justice. But the fact that she let her live in the end seemed like the perfect choice. I realise that I'm probably in the vast minority with most of this, but that's just how I found the game. I seriously loved it. Especially the last scene, where Ellie (after having two fingers bitten off by Abby) takes out Joel's guitar, which she's been playing all throughout the 25 hours of the game, she goes to play his song -- And she can't. Her fingers are missing. I think it was at the moment she realised that she had lost everything -- For nothing. She let Abby live and I think that will haunt her for the rest of her life. Along with the image of Joel's lifeless, bloodied body. There were some serious consequences for her vengeful journey. As a wise man once said "Vengeance is a fools game." 10/10.

Couldn’t have said it better! That’s what a lot of people miss about the game, mostly because of what Abby did at the beginning: Abby is, in fact, VERY similar to Joel. Her relationship with Lev, absolutely parallels Joel’s relationship with Ellie. Abby and Joel also share the same brutal heroism, pessimistic world-views, and paths to redemption. I’m not saying that I liked how Joel’s death was portrayed, but if we look past the death itself, we can see far more easily how beautiful this story is and how complex Abby is as a character.

it was'nt all for nothing, ellie finally forgave joel in the end for what he robbed her of and moved on by leaving his stuff behind.Also if you open her journal after she lets abby go, you'll see thats she is finally able to draw joel properly whereas before she'd cross his eyes out.I think that tells us that she's moved on and is at peace with all that happened.

A few comments: 1. Eye for an Eye & Cycle of Violence are paramount. 2. This game is a masterpiece. You have to play it more than once, and on grounded which takes time because it is realistic and tough. 3. Naughty Dog did something here with the story telling - I pray they dont give up on this franchise. 4. Naughty Dog - How about two payable DLCs, Tommy’s expansion (his experience in Seattle). Jesses expansion - traveling to find ellie/dina, then his experience tracking tommy down. I need more of this, or more games like this!!! Wishful thinking…..

@@JirkaParkour it would have been. It would have been the picture perfect happy ending, but it still leaves things unanswered. I think it's more realistic- it's not like they didn't want you to feel like Ellie got some joy, but she's still not over everything that happened. It doesn't look like that far in the future when you've got the farm, clearly the trauma still lingers and leaves you a shell of what you once were. The point of that ending was to show how you can define yourself by the tragedy that happens to you and how you can lose yourself in looking for revenge and a "solution" to that feeling of emptiness. Trying to right every wrong just makes you wrong at some point. I think the guitar at the end perfectly symbolizes that feeling of losing a part of yourself. Ellie can no longer play, and as the lyrics go "If I ever were to lose you I'd surely lose myself". As much as the ending stings, I think it's more beautiful and layered that way. Life is never that simple.

This is my take on both the Last of Us titles. They are both incredibly powerful stories. The Last of Us - Trust In The Last of Us, after losing his daughter due to the lack of human empathy, understandably loses his trust and faith in humanity. He loses his sense of purpose and relies on alcohol. The entire plot of him finding Ellie was a tale centred on him regaining his trust in people, and finding his sense of purpose. Because of Ellie, he repaired his relationship with his brother, Tommy. He met many others along the way and saw that everyone acts differently when put under pressure (the backdrop of the virus outbreak). This was put to the test when it came down to the hospital scene. Did Joel trust humanity enough to sacrifice Ellie? No, not humanity as a whole, however, he now trusted the people close to him, including Ellie, and he wasn't going to let another death of a child happen because of him again. When you lose someone, it is natural to blame yourself. Joel blamed himself for Sarah's death. He was not going to let another innocent person die because of his actions. He gained trust to form his own community soon after. A lot of us have trust issues, which is why we love the game. As we feel like we have changed in some way. ----------------------------------------------- The Last of Us Part II - Forgiveness In the sequel, we see that Joel's trust has improved a lot. He tells Tommy the truth about Ellie, and is also willing to rescue strangers. However, this bites him back and gets him killed (due to Abby's vengeance). Now, we deal with Ellie's thirst for violence and vengeance and we take her side. On face value, the story is about violence being a never-ending thing. But the deeper meaning of the story is the ability to forgive someone. Forgiveness does not mean acceptance, but it is a step towards it (if there is a third chapter, I believe it will be about acceptance, I will explain below). Just like how Part 1 aimed at making the player gain trust in people, Part 2 is trying to make the user forgive Abby, from Ellie's perspective. We don't need to sympathise with Abby. We are shown the most brutal death for Joel, along with the deaths of characters we like (Jesse). We are supposed to feel the anger, but we are also forced to forgive Abby. Many of us have not been through the level of injustice that Ellie has been through, so it is easy (and totally understandable) to absolutely hate Abby. But, forgiveness is a tough thing to do. It's easier to act with vengeance than forgive (like how it's easier to be pessimistic, than optimistic). Naughty Dog forcefully wanted the players to learn to forgive. ------------------------------------------------- If there is a third part, what will it be about? I think that there will be a third part, and it should be about acceptance. If so, then it might be a tale about some new group that attacks Ellie's community. However, Ellie and Abby will have to work together despite having their differences. Accepting that what happened, has happened. And the only way to acceptance is to keep looking forward.
@rjsnaker3911
@rjsnaker3911 3 года назад
I think you are totally right in what u have written. The game wanted you to forgive Abby, thats why they show the 3 days from Ellie's perspectives and later from Abby's. They want you to feel anger and want revenge the first half of the game, and later they show us the other point of view, to understand that both point of view are "right", that there isnt a hero and a villain, that you can understand Joel for wanting to save Ellie, and you can understand fireflies for wanting to make a cure even if that killed Ellie, the same happen with the second game, you understand Ellie for wanting revenge for the Joel's death (her "father"), and the same with Abby wanting revenge for his father's death. And why we should "forgive" Abby in some way as the players? Because at the end of the first game we make a lot of damage indirectly to Abby, the same with the first half of this game. And I think the third part could be about acceptness, and maybe having Ellie and Abby cooperating after all the have suffered. And this time I think we will br able to see how the new Fireflies are...

@sudha bhatt It will. It uses a protagonist switch rarely attempted in storytelling that is starting to be attempted more often, represents more than straight white males, takes a unique approach to ludonarrative dissonance and solving it, actively employs deeper storytelling techniques like motifs, symbolism, leitmotifs, and subtext to the point that none of them are supplementary but rather necessary, and takes an approach to video-game storytelling alone that is the direction I've seen it heading for many years but never fully embracing until now, which is using the most unique aspect of gaming - embodying the character - to literally portray it's story, themes, characters, and emotions. SPOILER: . . At the end I didn't want Ellie to chase Abby, I didn't want them to fight, I wanted Ellie to stopped like Abby's stopped before. They made me empathize with both stories cause they are both after revenge. Part 2 is the consecuences of Joel decisions, a man who killed a lot of innocence people and doomed the humanity because of a selfish wish to fill the emptyness Sarah left in his life with Ellie, even taking Ellie desire away from her. At the end Abby got his revenge, Joel got what he deserved and Ellie started his own path to revenge. But... If the cycle continues, all is gone, and in the last scene Ellie can't even play the song that Joel taught her. Yes, I think the story could have a better structure and that the Ellie development is weakers than Abby's, but I think the plot was very good though. And both Part 2 and 1 are master pieces.

Yeah, it's not like the surgeon pointed a knife at him or anything. Like, they even let Ellie talk to Joel and go through the whole thing before putting her on the table to cut her brain open and kill her. It's definitely Joel's fault, and he absolutely deserved to be tortured for several minutes on end after offering help to strangers and saving one of their friends. Ellie was an asshole for being emotionally distraught to the point of going for revenge. Like, they took away the only thing that gave her life meaning, who cares, get over it. She was right in letting Abby escape at the end, Abby did absolutely nothing wrong. I mean, sure, she was part of the WLF, a murderous psychopathic group that used dogs as disposable weapons in a war against kids and tribalmen and that attacked and captured all "trespassers", but like, who doesn't do all of that? And her dad saved a Zebra! That excuses wanting to kill an immune girl after failing on numerous other immune children. It's like communism, it didn't work before, but it will this time! Right?

Great comment. Basically The Last of Us 2 in a nutshell. Fortunately I didn't see the leaks and I played it. It was great. However, most of the negative comments are basically "Joel didn't deserve this", like he was kind of like a superhero or a religious text, like the first game was a new bible or something. But I think that isn't the case here. One of the great details about the two games is that no one is a hero. There's no heroes or villains, just people. I'd be lying if I said this is one of my favourite videogames of all time, and it's great and I admire it, but I think I'd play something more pure. Bloodborne is still my favourite PS4 game and one of my favourite games, but TLOU2 has something that I appreciate and I want to see in the next years: Risky plots.

The strings...the strings. They dance upon the emotions of my heart. This game has some of the best soundtracks of any video game ever. It is dark, sad, emotional...as it should be. Nothing about this game is happy. It is all just a heart-wrenching mess. Ripping every tear from your eyes, at least for me it did. What a masterpiece..what a fuckin masterpiece...

I don't understand how people can even hate this game. It was a fucking masterpiece. It made me feel so many emotions. If you're into film and script writing then you would know this is TOP NOTCH. The characters development is amazing. The parallels of Ellie and Abbie are very noticeable. Their stories of pain are very mirrored. It makes you feel for both characters. As for Joel, there had to be a shocking event (Joel's death) to encourage the rage that creates the hunt for revenge in this story. So beautiful, so painful and emotional. Nothing short of a masterpiece. I'm shocked.

Agreed, the only issue i find is joel´s death, it felt like coincidence after coincidence its like they had to make an excuse so Ellie could watch him die cuz it was the trigger for the hole story
@hollydevane320
@hollydevane320 3 года назад
@@majorpum95x26 I do feel like it was a little quick but also necessary for the drive of revenge in the game. I noticed my mind switch from a relaxed player to a determined player after his death. I think it would be interesting in the next game if you got to play Ellie at points but also possibly play other side characters stories like Jesse, Tommy, Dina and Lev and connect it to the ending of the last game. But also I would like to be able to search for Dina, and see what they may have planned for the future of the game and where the story leads.

It is a really hard time, and it is a very bittersweet ending. After I finished it a second time i felt that the game felt more positive. Ellie lost alot, but she gained peace with herself. She is still alone, but her life still has a lng way to go. This doesn't feel like the end of her story for me, just the end of her grief.
