The Last Remaining Mansion in Downtown Louisville 

Refreshing to see a home from a bygone era so well preserved.

I particularly liked this house because it seemed more human in scale than the enormous mansions that have rooms large enough for a basketball court in each one. This was lovely, but obviously a family home.

I would recommend a trip to "Old Louisville". There are many mansions lining the streets. Unfortunately many of them have been converted to condominiums or apartments. St. James Court and Belgravia Court are two of the most beautiful streets in America. The Conrad Caldwell house is one of the best examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture you will find anywhere. Come on down, Ken you could generate many videos on the housing stock still being preserved here in Louisville.

I'm from Lou-a-vul (as the natives say) so glad to see this house. There are several houses in the area with this style but less ornate finishes

What I remembered most from my only stay in Louisville was the doctor's office with the old medical tools that was a part of the tour of this mansion. Excellent video.

Lovely home. I like the clean lines. The interior has a lighter feeling than some houses of the era; the stair hall feels very open. I love the flower wall lights; fantastic!! Oddly, the newel post reminds me of one of those Dr. Who Dalek things, lol.

Love the house but Old Louisville has one of the largest clusters of victorian mansions in America, I wish you would go more in detail as it is one of the most gorgeous neighborhoods. I used to own a 3 story victorian in Old Louisville. Charming historic neighborhood

Since I live in historic St. Augustine, FL, I don’t wonder what the last house standing will be. But I also spend a lot of time in and around Jacksonville, FL, having lived there too. There are fabulous old homes and mansions in scattered pockets throughout Jacksonville; Riverside, Five Points, Avondale, to name a few. Have you ever explored our area, Ken?

Hi Ken, this is my hometown and I love the bedroom with the antique wallpaper. Also the room with the double fireplaces. Love that this still exists.

I'm not a fan of the dark, heavy, furniture, but I did like the cabinet with the glass & drinking ware in the dining room. It's good that at least this one house was saved.

No favorite room but those carpets had me drooling.

Having watched a number of these one thing that strikes me is that the dinning rooms have very small tables. This one only seats six. Has anyone else noticed this.

Reminds me greatly of a home of that vintage that friends just bought!

WHAS-TV is directly behind this house. They used the house in the opening of their late Friday night movie feature called "Murder at Midnight" back in the seventies. This was when the house was painted all brown and it was filmed at night of course.

You should make a video about the houses in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Around the beginning of the 20th century it became a thing for the rich families, which at the time were among the wealthiest in the world, to build “little” french palaces in Buenos Aires. There were many of them, and just like in new York, most were demolished to make space for offices and residential buildings. A truly horrible thing. The buildings used to be majestic, monumental pieces of art and part of our history. Some have survived tho, most became museums, embassies or luxury hotels. The Four Seasons for example bought one of them, and you can currently book a suite inside of it. The USA Embassy also owns one of these palaces, but they’ve owned it since 1929, thankfully. Its called “Palacio Bosch” The French Embassy also owns a magnificent palace (Palacio Ortiz Basualdo). The Brazilians own the Palacio Pereda, the Holy Sea also owns one (Palacio Fernandez Anchorena) The British have the Palacio Madero Unzue Hyatt acquired the Palacio Duhau, and it currently works as a Park Hyatt luxury hotel. There’s a ‘Military Circle’ that bought the Palacio Paz and it’s open to the public. The Italian Circle bought the residencia Leloir The National Government bought the Palacio Errazuriz in the 30s and turned it into the National Museum of Decorative Art. Its also open to the public and completely free to visit. The Goverment also bought the Palacio Anchorena (currently known as Palacio San Martin) to house the Chancellery. The Palacio Casey, the Palacio Dias Velez, Palacio Haedo (all host a part of the government today) Theres a house called “Residencia Maguire” that interestingly enough is currently privately owned and used as a residence by one of the descendants of these aristocratic families. It’s all very mysterious and they refuse to sell the property.

Great report!! I live in Old Louisville abs am familiar with the house! You should do the Conrad Caldwell house. It is a house museum of one of the most expensive houses built in the city. An imposing stone Richardson Romanesque structure it is beautifully preserved and even boasts a ghost on residence! It was built for $100000 in 1896, an enormous sum at the time, 4 times the cost of the average mansions in the historic district!

The first bedroom looks like it was furnished with furniture made by the Berkey and Gay Co. of Grand Rapids Mich. I saw other pieces throughout the house that looked like they also came from there. I loved every room!

I own a piano identical to the one shown by the bay window in this video. (1:51) My piano bench also appears to be identical to the one in the video as mine also has glass feet (look carefully). My piano is a Steinway. It has a serial number stamped inside documenting to show it was built in 1865. My parents bought it in Kalamazoo, MI in 1951. If only my piano could talk!

I’m really surprised that you haven’t done a video on the Cuneo mansion in Vernon Hills, Illinois. It was originally constructed by Samuel Insull, the man behind Commonwealth Edison. It was later purchased by John Cuneo Sr. a publishing magnate who was worth $900 million in the 1920’s. Cuneo Press printed magazines for some of William Randolph Hearst’s publications. There’s a table in the main hall that was a gift to Cuneo from Benito Mussolini. 😊

The 25 risers of the straight run main staircase with no intermediate landing speaks to the tall ceilings and how much room such a staircase takes to make it up to the next floor.

This is NOT the last mansion in Louisville. There are FOUR, single family dwellings on St. James Court alone that I personally know of. I lived there for 20-years.

I really like this site but am annoyed with the 90%+ of black and white photography. Black and white is okay for historical features but not, in my opinion, for houses still standing. Just my opinion.
