The Last Tiger II Prototype - History of the Bovington Tiger.
During April 1945 the British Captured several vehicles at the Henschel proving grounds at Haustenbeck, Sennelager, Germany.
They would discover several interesting vehicles here
Like the immense chassis of the E100 project and the Grille II or the geschuttzwagen Tiger, a Jagdtiger which had the rare Porsche running gear, and two Soft steal Tiger II prototypes, a VK 30.01 henchels prototype that was made into and experimental trench digger, and two
soft steal tiger ii prototypes.
Soft steel meaning that it used mild steel for these prototypes and not normal hardened armoured plating.
The two V2 Tiger prototypes both had the same Early Krupp turrets design, these turrets and especially the Tiger II is often mistakenly called the Porsche Tiger II.
after the "Porsche" turret due to the misbelief that these turrets were designed by Porsche for their prototype, in reality both turrets were designed by Krupp. The Early turret proofed to be overly complex and expensive to make also tests proofed that the curved front of the turret acted as a shot trap.
Krupp still made 50 of these turrets until they were replaced by the late Krupp turret.

It's hard to comprehend how many rare tanks were scrapped, it's sad. But it's important to remember how war weary most of the world was in the decades following the end if WWII. If you were a French farmer with a lightly damaged Panzer VI in your field, there was literally no demand for that vehicle and it's parts (altho the French military did use csptured Panthers for about a decade, I believe) The farmer would not hesitate to scrap the Panzer, which was a symbol of the enemy and could bring him much needed money.

Very interesting 'new' fact revelation. I'd always been led to believe it was Henschel v Porsche, that Porsche version required too much in short supply copper for adequate turret movement that negated its production engagement . Clearly, thanks to your detail, matters were more involved than that, and what we're shown on display isn't quite the all in one story. Thank you.

It's a shame what they did with the Tiger 2 P! Parts sold, interior is completely missing, commander's cupola, stern hatch, driver and radio hatch as well as the engine removed so that you could restore the Tiger 1 (131). This tiger, the only remaining Porsche tower. I can't understand something like that, restore it again !! in running condition, parts are everywhere.
@42cerberus
@42cerberus Год назад
The Tank Museum though long and hard before taking the engine from the Tiger II prototype. Their logic was that 131 was the first Tiger to be captured intact and recovered, formed the basis of the technical and tactical reports and was an actual fighting vehicle. In that respect, it was a more historically significant vehicle so had a better claim for restoration. There is also a running Tiger II at the French army tank museum Samur. Having seen the Tiger Collection, I agree with them.

@hansgruber3064
@hansgruber3064 2 года назад
Wouldn’t say they screwed up the engine. They did have to use a few engines in the original restoration, original one was used in one of the armies engineering schools and was missing parts, and one of the other ones they found the block had micro fractures caused by frost damage. It has had to have a engine rebuild which isn’t surprising seeing its a Maybach HL 210 in a tiger, a very old Maybach, a engine that didn’t have the best reputation for reliability when brand new so 80 years it might need a bit more looking after.

So much information in this is incorrect - the 1st "Prototype" Tiger II with zimmerit WASN'T a prototype - it's a standard early production vehicle used to test the single piece tracks. It's engine wasn't flooded in the test tank either - it went to Sweden for testing in 1947 where it was eventually scrapped - the Sweds still have its gun barrel and engine block.

Everything you say here is wrong, I have no idea were you got this from. The Swidish Tiger II is a totally different tank that came from the French. You can even see the different Zimmerit to the front and a typical German testing tactical number on the front, which the one at Haustenbeck doesn't have. I also never said it drowned, it looks like it did because they got it stuck and you literally see it sink, so it probably flooded.

But almost everything else was obsolete, the Panzer I and II were already obsolete before they were used in WW2, Panzer IV was obsolete in 1943 and the bigger tanks went nowhere, the only decent tank that wasn't obsolete was the Panzer III, but for the roll it was designed for, it was. What about the pictures you have used showing the Tiger II that was donated to Sweden in 1947?ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pPxI-5GmlZM.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pPxI-5GmlZM.html?

That's to show what the exhaust would have looked like and the rest is just filler, it's not like the Drone Footage is actually footage of the German British military area.

@@PanzerPicture haha niet echt he?

Typical of Bovington museum has some of the rarest vehicles they either steal bits to sell and just leave the tanks in disrepair or leave them out of view in a tin shed collecting dust which actually should be in the museum while they spend all the money maintaining crap British stuff that breaks down during the biggest live display weekend 🤦‍♂️
