In this week's The Leather Element video, Chuck shows some common and creative leather closures. From snaps and conchos to handmade buttons and toggles - we just scratch the surface with this video! So, if you ever find yourself without a closure for a project, maybe you can create your own using some scrap leather!

"Buy two... one is gonna disappear immediately." is both the most effective AND the most honest sales pitch I've ever heard.

I don't understand how people lose their tools. I mean I know it's really common with any tools, but it takes like no extra time to put one back in its home.

Another awesome 'how to'! Thank you! Love the idea of using scraps to make toggles! As for the 'buy two'..🤣I guess this happens frequently? Maybe make a nice leather strap with scraps to tie to it.kind of like a tire on a gas station key! Hee hee!

Chuck 100% fantastic content and hilarious one liners in all the videos. "10:32 ...we have a tool, take my advise, buy 2, 1 will disappear immediately" Absolute love seeing these videos in my inbox, they make my day and because of the stay at home order, been watching them ALL.

only a minute in but... for the large (1" give or take) round punch, you can find an old (or buy new) piece of black iron pipe and grind the edge to a cutting point.

I buy cheap sockets and grind a bevel on the outside. Works well.

Yup, I used both an old used 1" water pipe and a piece of thin-wall conduit to experiment with. The thin-wall cut leather easier but dinged faster since there was less material in the wall to resist. The water pipe does great.. although it did leave a bit of grey dust on the first couple of buttons. I used wood blocks on top end to absorb cold forming. Maybe giving it a somewhat solid top of ??? might work better. Still... it works. :)

I’d love to see a leather element about adding dividers and pockets to the interior of bags. I’m fairly new to the craft and have made a couple of basic briefcases and satchels, but I’m not sure about the best way of adding interior dividers and pockets that actually look good.

Hi Chuck, this old LEATHER SMITH has a suggestion, I bought a roll of the stuff wood workers use 2 keep there projects from moving around, I glue it 2 my anvils 4 snaps and rivets, does 2 things anvil doesn't move around and anvil is cushioned, I also glued upholstery leather hair side down on anvils so snap caps and rivet caps do not get scratched or flattened. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

I love these Leather Elements. I always learn and get new ideas of how to do things. I'm curious though as my nemesis is the segma snap. What weight leather is it good for? The ones I have (I got hundreds from a garage sale) the post seems too long for like 2/3 or even 3/4 oz so I have trouble getting them to set correctly.
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 года назад
Hi Greg, Segma snaps are usually used for something like bracelets or a project where the snap doesn't have to be heavy duty because these snaps aren't as strong as a Line 20 or Line 24 snap. Chuck usually recommends leather weights in 2/3 oz. up to 5/6 oz. Hope that helps!
@ronsites2694
@ronsites2694 4 года назад
Please talk about why snaps are called called line 20. Line 24, etc. Is there a chart somewhere that tell us what size to use with what weight leather? I would love to see you offer assortments of good quality snaps and rivets. I can get these from Amazon but the quality is not good and I would rather buy from you.

Hi Ron, We'll link the video below where Chuck talks about the different snaps and what leather weights we would recommend for each one. Hope that helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TiPZ0oonVMg.html

You make setting snaps look so easy. I can never get snaps or rivets to set straight, they always skew off to the side with me
@chrissalard
@chrissalard 4 года назад
Every time I’ve had one go to the side, was because I was using too large of a snap for the weight of leather. You don’t want but about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch sticking above the leather.
@wesg1
@wesg1 4 года назад
@@chrissalard That makes sense. I only line 24s so theyre probably too big

@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 года назад
Hi Wes, What Chris said is correct, usually the post is too long. We'll link Chucks video below on what weights of leather he recommends for each type of snap. Hope that helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TiPZ0oonVMg.html

Hi Chuck. I was wondering if its possible to dye a perviously dyed vintage coat that is red into green. If so, what dye would you use? Thanks!
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 года назад
Hi Ceara, That's a tough one because you won't be able to remove the red color and because dye is transparent, the green probably won't cover up the red. I'm sorry I don't have better answer for you, but I can't say that I would recommend trying it.

With to coats, can you use neats foot oil after wet molding, then atom wax, then a resolene for water resisting?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 года назад
Hi there, I wouldn't recommend using both atom wax and resolene. I would do just resolene because the atom wax could act as a barrier and the resolene won't apply nicely.

What is a good leather and leather weight for general projects
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 4 года назад
Hi Christopher, it depends on what you're going to be making. A 4/5 oz. is a good weight for small items such as notebook covers, accessories and wallet exteriors but if you want to do belts, holsters or sheaths you'll want something heavier like a 8/9 oz. We'll link our leather conversion chart below for you as well as a video Chuck did on what leather to use for specific projects. Hi Iris, Below is our Beginning in Leathercraft guide. Some of the items you may already have - like a utility knife and a cork back ruler. So really all you need to get started is a knife, a straight edge, leather, chisels, needles and thread and you can cut and stitch. You can burnish the edges with just water and a canvas cloth. www.weaverleathersupply.com/learn/leather-101/getting-started-in-leathercrafting

You should pick up a cheap gasket punch set. The punch sizes range from 2mm to a big beefy huge size I don't know the exact dimensions of. I got mine for about $30 and I use it all the time.
