The Legacy of Duel Masters. (Seven Deadly TCG Sins: Errata Text) 

Duel Masters walked so any decent TCG this side of 2010 could run.

As someone who grew up playing Yugioh, collecting Pokémon in the games, and enjoyed the art of mtg, when duel master came to my school I was all for it! And I actually learned how to play it with friends and their parents Even I cannot deny the shear force it brought to the us! The inspiration it might have caused in my favorite modern day games, vanguard, digimon, any many other games I don’t play. If I ever made my own card game I would want it to be something like duel masters. I hope that if some of my favorite childhood games came back, chaotic, duel masters, etc. I hope they come back with a very strong presence and don’t fall victim to how they flopped in the first place

It''s interesting that we have an example of a gag dub benefiting a show with Ghost Stories, and one of it being to the detriment of the show, and its connected media, with Duel Masters.

I used to be a member of the Duel Masters Club where they sent you a welcome package with a member card, stickers, mini posters, etc.

It'd be interesting to get a detailed video on how Wizards of the Coast was involved with the Pokémon TCG in the earlier years of that game's localization outside Japan. How involved were they in some of the elements that parallel the mechanics in Magic?

7:27 YES! When I was a kid it was so hard to chose which card to put in the mana zone and which to use later. It would have been so much simpler for me if DM had dedicated mana cards

I've been learning how to play the Digimon Card Game recently and didn't know anything about Duel Masters before watching this, so I was so surprised at how many mechanics were lifted from this game!

I will say this, thank you kohdok. After hearing Wixoss, Duel Masters, Magic from you, I've become a fan of all 3 of these series. I've watched both selector and lostage (haven't finished conflated yet.) Played duel masters play's, watched a little of the show. And, gotten myself some magic cards with one being a starter deck.

I miss Duel Masters so much, I still have all my cards including a Bolshock dragon in a card protector. the biggest drive that draws me towards wanting to learn Japanese is just to play this game again.

I remember enjoying this game a lot on the Video Game on PS2 when I was a kid. This Game legit had a lot of good points to it. Happy to try Digimon with it's influences.

Duel masters should’ve been the one

Relevant to your video: I used to play a videogame called "Ironclad Tactics". It's a bit difficult to explain, as it's a bit of a genre breakter, but it's a real-time turn-based card game where each turn you have a limited time to play your cards depending on the amount of Action Points you have, then all the actions you and your opponent would resolve, then you'd get a new card and some action points etc. The board was a simple checkerboard/square one and the goal was to place your ironclad on "your" side of the board, potentially equip them (with weapons, for example), and have them reach the other side of the board - then they'd leave it and you'd score some amount of victory points. Scoring victory points would give your opponent some action points as a catchup mechanic. And it was, IMO, the worst thing in the game. Frequently on a level I'd first let my enemies score some points on me to "kickstart" my gameplan. Pushing your ironclad to the victory line would actively make your situation worse, since you'd inevitably lose a unit and give your opponent points. And as a result of that the games really dragged out (as playing reactively was also beneficial since you'd be able to outfit your ironclads appropriately for the situation), having turtling to get enough action points to overwhelm your enemy the most beneficial, but also pretty tedious strategy. The mechanics were great, but I really, really wished scoring victory points gave action points to me rather than my opponent. The point you've made about snowballing in Pokemon reminded me of it. I've never played it, but the situation rang the bells pretty well. Don't you need to lose resources/deteriorate your board state in order to score points in it? Doesn't the other player have some counter mechanics, like the ability to get a different type of pokemon when their original one faints? If so, it would make sense to give some benefit to the winning player to let them capitalise on their play.

I haven't heard of this beauty since that PS2 game ages ago. Nice channel btw, I know literally nothing about TCGs, I just play Yu-Gi-Oh! branded Solitaire.

god... with anime doing a bunch of reboots/remakes of their old series (Fruits Basket, Higurashi/When They Cry, Shaman King). I think Duel Masters coming back as Duel Masters would be great... hell if Digimon could come back and make waves off nostalgia I think Duel Masters could do the same or maybe I'm just too optimistic and its a pipedream to think I could come back :S

It was funny when i first was leaning mtg in my teens it seamed so complicated in the way it was being told to me but then half a hour in i realised it was just duel masters and i knew how to play that and i could more or less pick up and play as long as i read the affect text and the even funnyer thing was no one in the store knew what fuck was duel masters was. So its nice to learn why that was that they are so similar

God, I remember getting the Duel Masters GBA game way back when and sorta stumbling through it, it was fun, but I never really bothered looking more into the series. If I could find a good online platform for it, I'd be interested in trying it again

Love the use of Wild ARMs music here! Now I know what game to blame for cutting down the use of instant speed interaction in a lot of later card games, which pretty much killed my interest in all of them. On the other hand, the rest of its innovations are really excellent. :)

The only good thing to come out of Kaijudo was Scaradorable

As someone who watched the show and had the cards I had no idea how the game was played all I saw was cards turned monsters summoned and shields breaking

If Duel Masters ever came back to the US, I'd be down to play it

Duel Masters still influences Magic the Gathering from time to time. Double Faced Cards and breaking up choose effects on cards with bullet points.

great video! small note, in MtG they recently changed from "Converted Mana Cost" to "Mana Value", not sure if that's gonna be easier to explain and people always used cmc as an abbreviation anyway..talking about errata text :) about Duel Masters i really liked the game when i was younger, felt easier to learn and the comeback mechanic with shield/trigger felt intuitive and balanced even without all the gaming knowledge that i possess now that i'm almost 30. I eventually moved to Magic as i wanted more complexity with all the stack and priority way of playing but i used to have 5x30 cards mono-colored Duel Masters deck to teach friends "simple" MtG. The only thing i never really liked was the discrepancy between creature numbers in the thousands as if they are MMORPG bosses vs opponent def that's only units with 5 shields. On the "any card as a resource" element i have mixed feelings, it does indeed make the game faster and give more gameplay options, also the way you play them upside down make it easier for your opponent to check and remember how many of your big drops are still in the deck; on the other side tho managing how many lands/fetchlands/mana resource/ramp cards you put in your deck adds another layer of building and fine-tuning. cheers!

You appear to credit Duel Masters as the original "any card can be a resource" game, however it's worth pointing out Call of Cthulhu used this system first.

Another game with a unique battle age system is weiss Schwartz Ever 7 damage you level up allowing you to play stronger cards but if you hit level 4 you lose

I remember this game! I had a duel masters game on my gba and I really wanted to see if there were real cards for the game. It's rather sad it fell to the two year curse tbh, Duel Masters is quite fun!

13:40 I... okay, when you say "fun" here are you being serious or sarcastic? I can't tell. Those certainly aren't fun things to me. Edit: Wait. Are you implying that the Duel Masters dub is _bad?_ As the target audience, a young teen when it premiered, I can assure you I thought it was hilarious and found its more lighthearted style to be a welcome breath of fresh air from other, more high-stakes high-seriousness anime at the time, especially its closest analogue, Yu Gi Oh. As an adult that appreciation has only grown as I actually know enough about anime to actually really get some of the jokes that went over my head when I was 13-14. The gag dub did wonders and I am so, so glad that we got that instead of what to my understanding was a rather bland, uninspired shonen anime.

Did you ever play the runescape card game Chronicle? I'd love to hear your thoughts on why that failed.

The one thing that I really think killed Duel Masters and Kaijudo here in the west was the cartoon. I used to watch episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! over Duel Masters because at least with the English dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! you could take it much more seriously. Duel Masters was way over the top, cracking jokes left, right, and center. I watched 2 seasons of it on tubi, and I just barely got through that cringefest. And Kaijudo, yeah. Ray breaks a bunch of rules and doesn't get penalized.

This video gave me such catharsis. I was so exceedingly sad when this game went away, it's so beautiful in a hard to describe way.

When I was younger I preferred duel masters over pokemon, digimon, magic, everything. Freaking loved that game and the cartoon was hilarious too

I was a kid who played a bunch of card games when Duel Masters came out in america and that dub was one of the main things that kept me from playing the game. While my friends and I all thought the show was funny, I personally assumed the game was joke. It didn't occur to me that it was a serious card game like the ones I was playing at the time.

There was a demo event at the Mall of America where people could sign up to teach the game when it first came out. Not only did my friends and I fall in love with the game, we all got paid in Darksteel boxes. 1.5 boxes per day for three days. It was glorious.

I think this game’s biggest problem of the west was being dubbed “baby magic” which it kind of was. So it just didn’t get a foot hold with that crowd. Everyone else was still on yugioh and Pokémon, so it just died despite being an interesting game.

As someone unfamiliar with Duel Masters, I thought this would be a video about how Duel Masters broke the new sin of "Too much errata text."

This was a really good watch, well done! Duel Masters actually still has a small fanbase and YT network that exist outside of Japan. So from all of us, thank you for giving some spotlight to the game we all love so much with your excellent video!

I was a part of that mall tour. Someone reached out because I was an active member on an old Duel Masters forum and me and friend spend 2 days handing out flyers and teaching people to play. We got paid a box and a half of the 2nd set each lol. Good times!

One problem I have with things like prize cards, as more competitive player, is that it makes running one ofs perilous. This is particularly bad In pokemon, where you have limited space in your deck.

Still play actively to this day, keeping up with the current releases. Hopefully this video sheds more light on the card game and draws more people in to try the Japanese version - they're doing some amazing stuff!

Tbh I always liked duel masters cause it felt like playing MTG without playing MTG if that makes sense? Like the mechanics and all that were close to MTG but less overwhelming it found the perfect middle ground between the serious mtg art and the really anime looking art and the games could still get really involved tbh I think the game is perfect lol

14:03 nowadays there are currently several new types of cards (maybe not really new I guess, it's just lack of publication since the game is only growing in Japan. But they will expand the distribution to several countries in Asia I think, looking forward to this) that can be used in Duel Masters game, although it's not really general and usually needs certain cards to be used in the deck : - Cross Gears, just an Equip cards to your creatures and supports them, included into 40-cards Main Deck - Psychic creatures, a 2-4 sided card variant of creature cards that comes from Hyperspatial Zone (like Extra Deck although opponent can see it) that can "awakens" when certain conditions are met, "transformed" them into more powerful forms. They must be put into battle zone with certain cards (usually Hyperspatial spells) or effects - Draghearts, like Psychic creatures, a 2 or 3-sided cards from Hyperspatial Zone that starts as Dragheart Weapons (Equip cards like Cross Gears) or Dragheart Fortress (face-up cards that can gives some effects during game), and they can transform into others and finally become Dragheart creatures. Usually used with Draguner creatures that only them can "use" them or some cards - Gacharange creatures, just a unique creature cards that comes from Super Gacharange Zone (literally Extra Deck) and must be summoned from certain effects or cards - D2 Fields, like Dragheart Fortress or Field spell cards from Yu-Gi-Oh! - Orega Aura, basically an Equip cards for Gacharange creatures which can summons them and then equip themselves to it

You also forgot to talk about Duel Masters Play’s A Japanese Mobile game that emulates The card game you can get the The game via Japanese App Store and while the game is in Japanese there is a dedicated wiki ThatTranslate cards and we are pushing for a global release Also I upload Japanese version of the duels in the duel masters anime

My ONLY issue with reviews like these is they focus hard on the western part of these but not AS hard on the japanese side. I wonder if part of why this game even exists is because magic in japan was not as big as games like pokemon or perhaps mon colle so wizards wanted a huge competitor for the japanese market. Also yeah you did touch on this a bit but MAN i'd love a deeper dive on that aspect of it.

I do wish to say this about the gag dub of the original anime for Duel Masters: While it probably did hurt the reputation of the card game itself, Plastic Cow Production had to adapt a pretty boring and bland source material. Their unique style of humor made me chuckle watching the show, so I don't exactly criticize them too much for it. I mean... a character joking about a website called www.noveltyflyingcapes.com is kind of dumb, but the dubbing team did register that domain and had created that website. That turned a cheap joke into something that I can respect, heh. It should be noted that later seasons (which did actually start to go into more fantastical elements) were made by different people, and the humor added there is of a much lower bar, and that I will say was very cringe....

The artwork of Duel Masters has declined so much in the past 10 years. It barely looks like the game I fell in love with 15 years ago. Damn Japan.
