As a Dutch man, its weird to realize Bas Rutten is more famous outside Holland. He deserves more credit, both as a sportsman and personality. Great guy.
Probably because he left Holland a long time ago for the world. Went to Japan to fight and he's been living in America for a long time now. He doesn't really go around promoting Holland all the time or anything
I would've thought that Dutch people refer to their country as the Netherlands, seeing as the largest region in the Netherlands is Holland and not the actual country.
My uncle worked as a pitchman on fairs and boardwalks his entire life. Joe Greenstein was his close friend and they worked fairs and street pitching together. My uncle was completely cynical about everything except one person. Joe Greenstein was real. His feats were 100% legit.
I’m 69 saw the mighty atom when I was 10 at green dragon farmers market in Ephrata PA. He passed a horseshoe around in the audience then he bent it by hand among other things. Good memories.
I recently saw a bit of sketchcomedy on bas his own channel.. just in the intro of one of his fight instructional vids. where hes acting like a drugdealer but then a dealer in fight tips sortathing... was good too
The Mighty Atom was my "baby sitter" when I was a child. He was a side show performer at Zerns Farmers Market in Pennsylvania in the 70s. We would go there for the day out and I was so amazed by this guy and I would just sit and watch this guy in amazement. I bought his soap when he hawked it. A true legend and unbelievable memory of my childhood. My parents would leave me at his little area and go walk around for a few hours and I never left that area. I was infatuated with his feets of strength and he was probably 80 or 90 years old then. Look him up people and see why I as a kid found him interesting
Times are so different now. Leaving a child alone in public like that is unthinkable today. So much safer back then. How did mr atom die? Did scientists ever figure out how he was able to do the things that he did?
@@mdellertson He said his power was from spiritual beliefs and the deconstruction of subconscious limits we have. So, if the man say he does that thing in X way, why assume its another way? Unless we just disregard everything and say its fake
Joe’s always encouraging guests to get in to ‘stand up’ (wrongly in most instances). Bas is the most genuinely entertaining, charismatic and funny guys in MMA (joint with Chael).
Saw the mighty Atom back in the early 60s at Zern’s farmers market in Burks County Pa. He was a regular huckster there would draw a crowd with feats of strength. Seen him drive a 10 penny nail into 2buy then pull it out with his teeth. All the wile lecturing on the benefits of staying healthy and hawking his patent medicine’s Mostly laxatives. No doubt he was a great little showman. Everything else you might hear or see take with a grain of salt.
Rogan's enthusiasm and passion for the subject shine through, making this an engaging and informative watch. It's fascinating to learn about Greenstein's impact on the world of strength and his enduring legacy. Hats off to Joe Rogan for shining a spotlight on such an inspirational character and for delivering an exceptional piece of content that leaves us in awe of 'The Mighty Atom.'
Sebastian Rutton, what a nice man! Met him one early morning waiting in line at Macdonald's on Milpas street, Santa Barbara. Not a soul in a busy club Mac's knew Bas from shinola. But I did! He started a polite conversation. I never let on I was well informed of his talents long before the octagon! Except, when I left I said, "Hey Bas, have a nice life"! Bas winked and waved as he drove out of the parking lot.
It's a good day when we get to hang out with Joe and Bas Ruten!🤘🏿😎Me and Bas watched the Stan Lee's Super Humans. The world slepted on this one.And ...it ain't streamin kids... Hells Bells!
It’s great to see mighty atom get the recognition he deserves. He was my Mentors, Mentor Mentor for strength training . I learned from Dennis Rogers, who was taught by Slim Farman, who was taught by Joseph Greenstein aka Mighty atom. We are among you. There’s still a small community of us that train under mighty atom training principals and ways. We are small in number but we are among you.
Slim the Hammer Man! What was especially mystifying about many of the old strongmen was that they didn't always look very big. Wiry, sinewy guys who could pass for ordinary in street clothes. It made their tricks even better.
@@Poo260 Not much of a secret, just unpopular. If you do a little googling around you'll find some of his training and other old strongmen. With the invention of commercial gyms no one really cares anymore about the old strongman vaudeville training. it wasn't about big muscles or bench press. They developed a different kind of strength. His training was predominately Tendon, Bone, isometrics and grip. Training these will give you uncommon strength imo.
@@daveconleyportfolio5192 I've searched the depths of the internet, there's no publically shared video of this alleged guy. If you believe otherwise, share a link
I remember when I was a kid and my friend showed me a Guinness world records book with Joe Greenstein. He would bite chains in half and bend steel bares at 60 years old.
@@andrewdickens7016Guinness World Record provides their own props to verify a world record. He demonstrated the ability to bite through someone else's iron nail.
Greenstein single handedly broke into a concentration camp in Poland, 1945, beat up 15 guards then freed all the captives. I used to see him at a farmer's market in PA, he's a legend
There was a blac kid who was the first person to use echo location. His name was Ben. Idk if that’s who they had on Stan lees show, but RIP BEN! He was teenager playing video games, riding bikes, etc, but was 100% blind. He literally had to have his eyes removed due to a childhood disease. I saw him on tv when I was around the same age as him. This guy was amazing! They used him to try and make life easier for blind people! He was truly a superhero!
I’m 66 and saw Mighty Atom many times at Zerns Farmers Market on Boyertown, PA.. He used to chase me away after I could bend his horseshoes.. He was an amazing man… sold his own homemade soap. This was in the early 70’s
I read the book about Joe Greenstein and it's all true. His last performance was at Madison Square Garden, shortly before he died in 1977. He was vegetarian and ate tons on beans. Strongest man that ever lived, even in his 80's.
@@blahblah3786 The only thing I heard he lifted was a Volkswagon with three people inside with one arm, while unscrewing the bolts with just a cloth on the wheel to replace it.
I met The Mighty Atom when I was a small kid back in Brooklyn, ny. I didn't realize who he was back then, but grew up reading more about him. He lived in bklyn, ny, corner of Avenue J and east 42st
Wow, I didn't know so many people knew about the mighty atom. I knew guys that trained with him, and his old travel camper used to sit on a property right near my house. Pretty sure its gone now, but it was there all through the 90's and later. Always heard the stories of crazy stuff hes done.
@@seanclark5165 it's impossible I've seen his camper and knew people that trained with him because it was an act? That doesnt even make sense. And far from impossible, especially because I'm not lying.
Who knows some of it could have been an act but there was a lot of newspaper articles about him he definitely beat up those Nazis and a lot of his other Feats were all documented
Cant believe Joe didn't catch the "Greenstein had volunteered to teach jujutsu techniques to members of the New York City auxiliary police during World War II" part 🤣
Bas rutten could legit be jow Rogan father. They are like two peas in a pod. Bas rutten is just Joe Rogan who decided to keep fighting and didn't get into acting
I loved Bas's show he used to have "InsideMMA" i miss that show. He's a damn good commentator as well. I would have loved to see him as a UFC commentator, "El Guapo" is a legend.
00:37 I was so unprepared for that laugh, I almost fellout of my chair lol. ( if you leave the timestamp it links directly to that part of the video, is that new?!)
if you type him into google Bard you get this tidbit among other info about him. "Greenstein's legacy lives on. He is considered one of the greatest strongmen of all time. He is also credited with inspiring the creation of the fictional character Superman."
I don’t know exactly why but I enjoy this more than any other channel . I think it’s cause Joe strikes me as an honest straightforward type person. Really refreshing
