Raava is the spirit of light and peace and, after fusing with Wan, the Avatar Spirit. She is one of the oldest known spirits, having existed over ten thousand lifetimes before the appearance of the first humans. She and Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and chaos, spent much of their existence combating each other, at least since the Harmonic Convergence in 19,829 BG, with neither able to fully vanquish the other. Even if Raava were to destroy Vaatu and usher in a new era of peace, what little darkness existed in Raava would magnify until Vaatu was reborn and burst forth, beginning the cycle again; the reverse would happen to Vaatu if he were victorious over Raava.

So why don’t you use it? Korra has Raava at her prime, while the other avatars didn’t. I have a theory that Korra will be able to contact her past lives again. Think of the connections to the past lives as an octopus' tentacles. The tentacles have been severed from the octopus, but an octopus has the ability to regrow them. The souls of the Avatar's past lives will start regrouping and the tentacles will grow back and bond with the past lives, starting with Aang, then Roku, then Kyoshi, and eventually, finally ending at Wan.

So we can’t really blame korra for loosing the connection. It’s the second harmonic convergence after wan so Vaatu is at his most powerful at that time too. Maybe after 10000 years the avatar can loose the connection again if he or she has a strong villain.

@@nagaskay7381 She was struggling because Unalaq attacked her from behind and she was exhausted after fighting Vaatu. Now she has to fight the strongest villian that none of her past lives has ever faced. Not just that, Vaatu was stronger than Ravaa, since he feeds off negative energy and conflicts. Which is why more spirits turned dark and Vaatu was huge. Due to that, it gave Unalaq more power over Korra. Since harmonic convergence is about Ravaa and Vaatu not past lives. Its all up to their power and how strong they are during harmonic convergence. In this case, Vaatu was gigantic compared to Raava.

Is it just me or is raava and vaatu based on Yin and Yang. Before Wan seperated them, they were connected, just like the symbol. If either dies, they can be reborn but the small amount of light/darkness in the other one. In the symbol, there is also two tiny circles of the opposite colour, which is like that small amount of light in Vaatu or the small amount of darkness in Raava.

It could be so. It feels like saying that the blue giant Korra is similar to the Koizilla from the Legend of Aang. Like Koh the Face Stealer once said, Yin and Yang (also the koi fish, Tui and La) are like "good" and "evil". "Good" represents Raava and "evil" represents Vaatu.

I have a theory: Just like how Raava possessed the bending for Wan (I don't think she has firebending because we don't really see the fire turtle giving her the power), Vaatu can also possess the 4 bending styles if he somehow fuses with a human during convergence. Lion turtles wouldn't give him bending, so he would have to be reborn/reincarnated more three times in more 3 different nations to get the 4 bending elements. If he fuses with an earthbender he would be reborn in another bender and etc…

fact 1 ) raava started stated that when 1 of them dies the reincarnate with in the victor. we c that happen when unalock kills hers in darkness falls and when korra gets her back in the light in the dark. meaning when korra killed him vaatu got absorb into raava and fussed with her when she refused with korra fact 2) the convergence makes the possession permanent. meaning he will regrow with in the new averter cycle trapped with raava fact 3) as we saw in last airbender strong emotional stress can trigger the avatar state even into a blind-rage. in short conclusion the world is screwed

The blind rage part is false While it's true they can enter the blind rage with no self control that's only for avatars who have yet master the avatar state When they unlock the chakras they gain full control as they have mastered the mind making things like blind-rage nearly impossible (I say nearly because they poisoned korra but I don't think that counts as it was something forced)

At 5:18 that shot of mini-Raava peeking up over the lip of Wan’s pot is so adorable and I feel bad for finding her miniaturised, powerless form so cute.. Also, I really like how Raava and Vaatu both get more detailed the more powerful they are and less detailed the less powerful they become. I think the reason why raava wasn't there in ATLA is because it was raava who kept aang saved in iceberg for 100 years raava used all her energy and put to rest later on. She took time to regenerate and showed up and the time of Korra.

I have a counter theory. Because Aang did not know the story of Avatar Wan, he could not connect with Raava. I think that if Dark Horse and/or Nickleodeon would a story on how Aang learns about Raava and Wan, we could see an instance where Raava, Aang and the past avatars converge for like a meeting of some sort.

I wonder if 10,000 years of Raava incarnating her power with each avatar combine the power of the spiritual convergence combine with the power of the tree of beginnings also helped gave Korra's spirit the power boost to take giant form outside her body. I know Korra was powerful on her own because, duh, she spend most of book one disconnected from her spiritual self until she tried to face off Amon at Avatar Aang Memorial Island and even then she had to fight without the avatar state. But Raava had to had some impact on the human spirit of each avatar too.

To be honest, I always found the idea of Vaatu and Raava to be too black and white. Raava is the spirit of light, peace and order. But she is also the spirit of stagnation. Nothing can grow if everything is nice and easy. Life grows in adversity. Remember that all avatars had a calling for peace and balance, even if it meant betraying their friends or family. Calling her "good" is like calling the threat of nuclear winter a good deterrent. Vaatu is the spirit of darkness, conflict and chaos. But he is also the spirit of change. Without challenge life cannot evolve and grow. Vaatu is the driving force behind purpose. Take away purpose and you take away reasons to live. Vaatu being evil is like calling chemotherapy evil (injecting poison to treat cancer). Weak men create hard times - hard times create strong men - strong men create good times - good times create weak men.

Anyone else thought that Vaatu ruined the Taoist themes of Avatar? The idea was that there is no good or evil. Merely balance and inbalance. But then you have a giant dark demon serving as what feels like a nod to Abrahamic religions and Zoroastrianism. Now I have no problems with these ideas, but Avatar lost its thematic continuity.

I think the show implies that a lot of physical things were given anthropomorphic spirit forms but it didn’t seem like everything does.

@@TheAxeliono It could also be that the spirit for the Sun never made their way into the mortal world. Thus being forgotten, similar to how Raava and Vaatu were forgotten since while they had a concept, they didn't have a form in the physical world(anymore). It could be that as time goes on, due to the boundaries being once again weakened, more and more of the 'elder' spirits will be remembered.

If avatars have such a hard time connecting that far back why is it when Korra first went to find her, everyone was telling her to “go back to the beginning” while Kuruk told her to “find Raava”?
