@FatLittleButterfly No one is upset over a dark skinned mermaid. Mermaids can be dark skinned. But Ariel, an established character for over 30 years, IS NOT dark skinned. That’s the issue, and that’s why the movie is bombing badly. This movie has been out for just about 2 months, right? $548 million is not even close to the break even point for this movie. Most of the money this movie is collecting is from the domestic box office, so if you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at the international audience, because they are proving what we’ve been saying ever since they announced this casting choice; that they should have casted someone that at least looked the part.

I'm ashamed to admit this, but when it was first announced that Halle Bailey would play Ariel, I was against it. Not because I'm racist, which I'm not, but because I felt that Ariel's appearance is one of the many things that make her so iconic. I eventually started telling myself that what was really important was the red hair. But, it wasn't until I saw Halle in interviews promoting the movie that I realized that she is Ariel *incarnate!* She's kind, and loving, and she reacts the same way around children that Ariel reacts around human objects. I am truly sorry for ever doubting her, and I hope that I can find a way to atone for it.

Ariel was taken to the castle due to the common but deadly shipwrecks that occur, with few survivors - except for Eric. This explains why the queen was initially against Eric's sea travels and her prejudice to the sea gods. When the man finds Ariel in the sea, he assumes she survived a shipwreck (which is rare), and sends her to the castle, just as Eric was sent. Also, remember that Eric had previously given instructions to find the mystery girl who saved him.

I really loved that they kept the concept of Triton and Ursula being siblings; I only wish that they would’ve expended more on it like they do in the musical adaption. but the acting as well as the songs were phenomenal! I definitely love how they had Ariel and Ursula make a a blood pact, as opposed to the contract for not only solves the plot hole of her being able to write her own name, but it also cements the seriousness of the deal. 🧜🏾‍♀️🦀🐠🐦🌊🐚🗣️ 🎶🛶👩🏾‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏻🌅🩵💜🖤

Nowadays, it seems that people complain about everything, whether it is too different or not different from the original 😮. We could not see it in the theater because its run here in Korea was not long enough 😢. Maybe Disney went a little too far with the skeletons and skulls. That out of the way, I've seen people say this was "plain and forgettable," and I feel like we all get that feeling because we've seen this story, we know what's going to happen. Yeah, they changed a few things, but ultimately we know this story and that's why reboots and remakes always fall flat because we know the story, there is no intrigue, it lost a lot of the pizazz and color and energy the animation had. But if the kids these days like it, oh well, it was more for them.

Hans Christian anderson wrote the original story of the little mermain and the fact that scuttle says 'kill' the prince instead of 'kiss' is a nod to that because in the original story the deal was that Ariel kills the prince before sunrise or she turns to stone but when she was about to do so she couldn't and so she ran away trying to get to the sea but the sun comes up and she turns into a statue on the cliff by the sea for all to see. I love this version so much and it has become my favorite live action movie they have done. I like how this one is more for adults and slightly darker as well,though the original had it's dark moments as well but any way. Malissa is an amazing choice for Ursulla and by the way the tenticles are operaited by dancers who moved them so Malissa had to learn to move and sing with them and she felt like she was learning how to dance herself in a way because of that fact. Hallie is amazing as Ariel and she adds her own flare to it as well which I like. Her voice is just amazing and blew me away when I first saw it in the theaters. I like how they had Eric have more of a back story and they actually show the queen as well. Also I liked the added touch that both Eric and Ariel are collectors as well. The changes they made were subtle and were not not too far away from the original for me to get annoyed by it so I was glad about that fact as well.

If you removed the Scuttle-but, make Sebastian and Flounder looked more like in the original movie (Like Sonic second design in his live-action movie.) the movie would be so much better! Oh and making Eric killed Ursula while Triton would see him so the king will realised that not all humans are evil. This important part was replaced with Ariel, knowing out of nowhere how to use a boat plus his father wasn't there. He wouldn't know if she killed the witch or if a human did it. This doesn't proove that Ariel is brave and independant, this replaced a good message about accepting others. Nice job Disney 😠
@breezus3928
@breezus3928 Год назад
Ariel watched Eric use a wheel to steer the ship during the storm. Also Ariel is the protagonist and the situation with Ursula in power is partially a result of her own misguided choice: it makes sense that she should take responsibility for her actions and clean up the mess she made. This in turn makes Triton take her and her wants for her life more seriously, and realize he can trust her to live the life that she wants. Eric proved his worth just by him going out of his way to the middle of the ocean to help Ariel despite being a human with zero magic.

Only $548 million in the two (almost three) month span this movie has been out is definitely a big struggle. China and Korea are barely seeing it, and they are a big contender in the movie industry. If you’re still going with the racist angle, then how come LA Aladdin did so well? What about Fast X and Spiderverse? Those heavily feature black and brown people, but those countries love those movies. Why is that? It’s the sudden race swap of an established character is what’s getting on people’s nerves, so of course people are going to be turned off to it when they already don’t recognize the character. It’s what some Korean audiences have said why they are skipping this movie; because Halle doesn’t look the part. No one is saying a mermaid can’t be black. Of course mermaids can be black. Everything about this movie is insulting to the original and to filmmaking. I'm sorry you had to sit through this.

@@H4ps1@xhpzss it tore the original movie apart, and made it unappealing to look at, and boring. It did this to go for "realism" but then did things that in the age that this would take place is 100% unrealistic, and you know, be about mermaids, have talking fish, and animals? Which is fine, but its clear that they didn't care about making it realistic, and used that to justify the ugly scenery. There are very few times the scene looks nice and even then it lacks alot of that magic because they tuned it down a lot. Not to mention it took away all of Eric's agency, by making Ariel, a girl who has knows nothing about ships , perfectly steer it to kill Ursula, taking away his biggest moment, in favor of Ariel, which in turn lessened tritons moment of realizing humans might be ok, because he never sees anything that shows that humans have good qualities, and makes him supporting the relationship come from nowhere, which is a big issue that's present throughout the movie. Adding songs that were unnecessary, and ruined the tone, the main actress was very stiff, and they took away her curiosity, and a lot of her joy, it's clear in the original when Ariel is excited or interested in something, and yes animations get a bonus due to being over expressive, but there are other ways you can translate this irl. Bouncing in your seat, hyper focusing on something. Averting your eyes when over excited, and being shy. I don't think this was necessary the actresses fault, and probably just bad directing, but it still takes a lot from the movie. There was alot of overall issues with this movie, mostly it being unnecessary and not adding anything to it. Most retellings should add something of substance to the original film, or try to perfectly mimic it while adding a little extra magic to some scenes but it doesn't. It just doesn't do anything. If you watched this on its own years after seeing the original I can get how you would think it's a decent movie, however watching the original right after of before just shows how disappointing it is. I feel like it would have been better if they went for like, a realistic retelling, which you can be super creative with, or just stuck to the original script, where you would still have the issue of the lion king movie, but at least it would be less of a mess narratively. Of course all of this can be seen as opinions. Which is fine, but why are you guys jumping down someone's throat for opinions to begin with?

Glad to see that Disney is still able to get away with making these just because of people whose mind is so focused on Nostalgia that they accept literally anything as good. The acting was bad,the story was just a worse version of the original,the character designs were awful, they ruined most of the songs and the new ones weren't any good, and even the animation felt very overdone at times. Giving this a 3/10 is being generous. There is no singular reason to watch this over the original, it's just inferior in every single way. Bad Nostalgia cash grab that people eat up, encouraging them to make more of these insulting movies.

I don't care how good people pretend that Hallie did or even why there would even be dark skinned mermaids. This like ALL of Disney remakes has no reason to exist. Extremists can only destroy not create. Can't come up with their own unique ideas. Just an empty cash grab.
