What impressed me the most is that the lighting and the effects make it look like it's actually been filmed underwater. I mean, even Ariel's hair is moving like it's actually underwater.

As a 28 year old woman now, 4 year old me is crying, this is not the Little Mermaid, this is not the Ariel that I wanted in a live action. They disrepected the source material in terms of her image. Why couldn't they just make the Ariel that was already set in stone years ago? If they are going to make Ariel not white looking, then why not create a totally new IP/Side story for the little mermaid? And leave the orginal Ariel alone until they make a true live action Ariel in Disney Films. So what I got from this trailer is "Let's make the Little Mermaid black, while ignoring the fans who supported the cartoon version, let's leave them behind, eventhought they always wanted a live action, we could be respectful towards them, or we could focus on being more inclusive." (Great, do that, but with New, and totally orginal IP)

@@makotonarukami7468 If you really paid attention to the animated movie you would realize The little Mermaids, Mermaid kingdom is in the Caribbean which is why Sebastian the crab has a Caribbean accent and most of the music in the animated movie is from the Caribbeans which is predominantly black so Ariel being Black is being authentic to the area the movie is set in and I for one am excited to see this movie!!! Halle Bailey is going to be an amazing Ariel and her voice sounds amazing already.

This is so special and IMPORTANT. And why Halle’s casting is so much bigger than a pretty face and pretty voice. Why so many people cannot grasp that it’s okay for a half-fish fantasy creature to have any shade of skin as they’re, ya know, fictional… I wish those idiots would just call it is what it is, racism, but even moreso I wish those same bigots could realize how special this is going to be for SO many little girls and boys to see this representation. It’s just an added benefit that Halle has the perfect voice and expressions… I’m so happy for you and your niece and shit, my gay ass past self as a scared little gay boy in the south that wanted nothing more than to be “part of another world”.

@@highlander723 apples and oranges. For starters, I’m not a person of color. I don’t feel like explaining why in this example thats relevant, but by the end of what I say maybe it’ll click… but one the example is of a character that is an imaginary half-fish creature that doesn’t follow any human biological science and could be purple or look like the scary Harry Potter mermaids if it came down to it. Wakanda is a fictional LOCATION but it is still based out of AFRICA. That is the difference. Also, being African is integral to the characters, theming, tone, and setting of Black Panther. It’s been established as such since the get-go. In one of these examples changing the race has NO effect on the actual media/story. As mermaids don’t have races, and there’s no cultural significance tying TLM to a specific place (there are so many versions. Hans Christian Anderson was Danish, but the original tale wasn’t necessarily based in Denmark. In the LM Disney cartoon film, it’s heavily implied they’re in the Caribbean. So, even if there were some sort of reasoning as to what a mermaids skin complexion should or shouldn’t be, that still would make more sense. But I think that’s a silly take-too.) My point is that in the Disney cartoon and original tale, there was no cultural significance to a specific location or race. With Black Panther and Wakanda, it’s been about Africa from the get go. Wakanda being fictional or not, tons of media features fictional towns, villages, cities etc. that are still established as being in certain continents or countries. (That rings true of so many locations in comic books-Metropolis is supposed to be in the US. If a film made Superman film where Metropolis is based in Dubai, it would not make sense.) The same applies to white or any other race than African portraying Black Panther. I feel like I’m not explaining myself well but it gets tiring rehashing this specific example over and over when it truly is not an equal comparison. There’s absolutely nothing about Ariel being fair-skinned that has any impact on the story, location, plot, etc. Now, as the first red-haired Disney Princess one might argue that is more significant than her complexion. Her hair, and her overall tail/top color-scheme-to me-are the most iconic signatures or Ariel. And they gave her red hair (the locks look stunning in the water by the way), they gave her a purple top that somehow managed to be more tame and appropriate than seashells without at all feeling forced and while still maintaining the same exact aesthetic, and for her teal tail… WOW. Somehow they made it BETTER with the way it has a sort of iridescent shimmery shine with hints of purple and pink as the light hits it from different angles while still overall being undoubtedly very teal… which is such awesome detail, as so many fish do have scales that shift hues in different lighting. If anything, what they did with the tail is a way they managed to get an aspect of a half-fish and make it MORE realistic and fit the theme better. The complexion of the human part is irrelevant. But it isn’t a complexion issue, it’s a race issue-period. On race, in the original Broadway run of TLM Ariel was white but her sisters were of all different ethnicities as was Triton. I anticipate they’ll do similar here as Javier Bardem is Triton (of which I’ve seen very, very little complaining about. Perhaps because Triton was pretty tan, but he was still obviously meant to appear as a tan Caucasian in the cartoon… but no one seems bothered by that? Double standards afoot!), but as Triton is portrayed by Bardem I truly hope they include scenes with Ariel’s sisters (fingers crossed the “Daughters of Triton” song and segment isn’t cut) and that all the sisters are different shapes, sizes, and complexions/ethnicities. That’s also how they did it in the live action TV special and it honestly just makes more sense than fictional fish people would be all sorts of colors-from hair to tail to skin-other than non-dairy creamer off-white exclusively. I don’t expect to have changed your mind. 🧜🏽‍♀️

@@kevinwilson124 Ariel didn't have red hair originally. It was changed from blonde to red because of Madison in Splash. Disney didn't want 2 blonde mermaids.

It's because of the actors natural hair color and texture, it's hard to dye that kind of hair bright red.

The thing is it IS very true to the source material. The mannerisms, the music etc. I just really hope they keep the feel but change things up a bit. Maybe involve the sisters more. Maybe change the dynamic between Triton and Ariel. We have someone who can embody Ariel here, so they CAN change it up a bit. I do not want a carbon copy. But, then again, I'm not the key demographic as I am a grown ass woman, lol.

@@xavz_space9963 China is well known for not a big fan of dark-skinned character. Yes, it's Ariel not the background. Their censorship beyond any other for every Hollywood movies screening. Chinese market is huge in Asia and super important and of course, major sales for Disney. End of the day it's all about business.
