Tomoaki Hamatsu was taken blindfolded to a strange apartment, and locked inside. He had no contact with the outside world, and none of his belongings. Trapped in an empty room with no food or water, he was even stripped of all clothing. The only way out was to raise one million Japanese yen for the people keeping him captive. And the plot twist? He eagerly signed up for this.
The man became famous as Nasubi to millions of Japanese people who watched his every moment on TV. So how did he find himself in this situation? Let’s get into it!

It's amazing, I've known of this story for years due to it appearing in a book called "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader". But they didn't explain just how messed up the story is, and instead played it off as "ha ha, isn't this a funny kookie story". It's so insane to learn how bad it actually was many many years later

the producers and others involved with that program should be in prison. kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, reckless endangerment -- they committed a whole range of illegal acts against that man. but i guess bringing them to court would have been time-consuming and expensive.

Making him do it AGAIN and again and not keeping there promise, then humiliating him on live tv is something i dont think he expected. Its awful that this was allowed and that it affected his speech. But big up to him actually using his experience to help others get throught isolation! What an amazing guy!

the fact he went through the worst things imaginable, and still held onto his humanity and good will is admirable. Truly a testament to the nature of the human spirit to endure such adversity and still be a good person after. I wish nothing but peace and prosperity to this man, and nothing but bad karma to those who profited from his misery.

I thinks a bit more of morbid curiosity or people did not really believe it was true. As reality is often edited to distort the truth.

The same way people in the US would, reality TV in the US is a distortion of the actual reality so there's people who wouldn't believe it to be real.

One day a friend of mine asked the question: "If there were streams of shootings, would people watch them?" And every person present in the room answered "Yes". Unfortunately, probably if not the control of advertisers of the platforms, then we would have streams with burning witches. And something tells me that it already exists.
