NPR 587 is a USRA Light Mikado 2-8-2 steam locomotive. She was fortunate enough to be preserved and have a successful excursion career. But lately, it's unknown exactly what is going to happen to her.

"Nickel Plate Road 587 is a 2-8-2 type USRA Light Mikado steam locomotive built in September 1918 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Lake Erie and Western Railroad as its No. 5541. In 1923, the LE&W was merged into the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, commonly referred to as the "Nickel Plate Road", and allocated 587 as its new number in 1924. In 2003, the locomotive was being restored by the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville, Indiana. However in 2018, the museum was being moved to Logansport, Indiana, forcing No. 587 to be stored in Ravenna, Kentucky by the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. Since its arrival in Kentucky NKP 587 has been sold by Indiana Transportation Museum to a private individual who will remain anonymous until more information is released at a later point. There are plans to continue the locomotive restoration, but if and when that will happen is unknown. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, but was delisted on November 15, 2021."

I don’t want to be a downer, but I recently spoke with someone who was formerly partly in charge of Kentucky Steam. The gentleman said he left because of some shady tax stuff. He showed me how multiple people were working on it, getting paid for it. Handsomely. Plus, the numbers they said they spent made no sense, especially on the C&O Kanawaha. Over 200k spent, with false leads. He said they’d finish the T1 before the Kanawaha.

I first knew of the 587 when I watched steam in the summer by Railway Productions. And I felt shocked when I found out that she got disassembled after the ITM was evicted. I fear that the same thing that happened to the 5629 could happen to the 587, but I'm just praying that that doesn't happen, it would be a severe loss.

A nice fact to know is that she, as being built as class H6-A for one of the subsidiaries of the New York Central, the Lake Erie & Western Ry that she survived being scrapped by the fact she was sold to the Nickel Plate Road. There was also a highly modified version built for the French National Railways, the SNCF, as class 141R which were a very reliable and good performing class of locomotives, hauling trains ranging from heavy freight to all passenger trains not exceeding 100km/h or 62mph.

I was visiting Kentucky Railroad Museum back in 2022, I had heard of locomotives being restored to operational condition and saw the Nickel Plate Road tender. The following day I had dinner on the RJ Corman "My Old Kentucky Dinner train" when I saw some merch and heard some conversation, and then later discussed with an employee. The rumor I heard was that RJ Corman Co. was in the planning stages to acquire a steam locomotive. I don't know how much of that is true, considering it's me hearing rumors and then putting 2 and 2 together....

I have some experience with the National register, and don't think anything nefarious is going on there. Most likely the nomination was done by the State of Indiana listing the locomotive as having local or regional significance. Once the locomotives permanent location wasn't in Indiana, it would automatically be de-listed. It is now upto Kentucky/the new owner to relist it in Kentucky. If it is even eligible.

Don't know to whom you refer to as "they" as old owner ITM was broke, etc and had no means to do anything hence the sale of 587 to get desperately needed funds for more pressing priorities. You also have to determine if Ft Wayne, or R&BM, or whoever had space and other resources to take in a non-owned loco along with their other requirements. The sale to private owner and move to KY Steam Heritage was, at the time (which was an extreme emergency situation), the best of of a bad lot of choices. For the immediate time being 587, though "in limbo" is NOT in danger of ceasing to exist.
