In 1982, Mattel launched their Masters of the Universe line of action figures. While this was a bold new idea for a toy line, many elements in the beginning were reused from previous successful Mattel toy lines. Explore the connection between He-Man and Big Jim, and discover the lost Masters of the Universe action figure that didn’t make the cut on today’s episode of Toysplosion!

I agree , I’ve collected a lot of things but when comes to MOTU classics no other toyline can compete with them , not even legends

Master of Magetism the only toy line that I think could compete was GI joe from the 80s

No I’m referring to the new modern stuff bro not vintage retro , if Hasbro does GI Joe 6 inch line like the MOTU classics by Mattel with all the playsets and vehicles Small and large figs then I would compare

Kenner was notorious for recycling parts from one toy line to another. The whole Robin Hood Prince of thieves line was recycled parts from Super Powers and Star Wars. Also the Joker cycle in the 90’s Batman toy line was the exact same vehicle as one from the Robocop line, with a new projectile. It does make a lot of sense, and not too many kids would’ve noticed.

It was the genius of MOTU Classics that lost figures like these got another chance.

This is fantastic. As a European growing up in the eighties I never knew Battle Cat, Panthor and Zoar were part of the Big Jim toyline. I did, however, notice the broadly used, cheap mold swaps for different figures back then (which I now consider to be a classic MOTU feature). In that regard, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that they were interswapping between toylines. It wouldn't be a far-fetched idea either that the same miser of a senior product manager was behind it all. Thanks for the information.

Kenner was notorious for re-using existing parts and molds (SW/Super Powers-Robin Hood), and I think had Gygor been released originally in the line, it would have fit. Great video, ty!!!

Very interesting. He didn't seem like he would be big enough for He-Man to mount his back. Though a Fighting Gorilla along a Battle Cat definitely sounds interesting. I'm still very glad that I picked him up in Classics. I saw a pic of him in I believe some German MOTU audiobook art that was incredible.

That custom Gygor sure looks neat 😁👍. Maybe he’d feel less out of place if he was released properly in the vintage line. I should probably check out the other stuff the customizer you asked to make him sometime soon 🤔. And the one from the concept art sure looks interesting 🤯. Makes me wanna see as another custom like that and/or him being a new separate character in the MOTU Classics line. Nice video still 👍.

I like the reused sculpt better than the resculpt. Gygor's charm, for me, is that he's like a gorilla but definitely not a gorilla. Just a crazy wide-eyed axe-wielding monster. What a beautiful toy.

Dan, correct me if I'm wrong. Mattel actually used the jungle cat 1st in 1971 for Tarzan and the Jungle cat. Then used it for Big Jim in 1976. Then Tarzan was re released in 1977.

*I never thought I'd see the day Dan would have to tell me to buy toys* Seriously I think Gigor while he does...barely fit into the MOTU universe, looks more like something out of the Blackstar universe. I think if the had gone with the second idea, closed the mouth or made the face a little less terrifying, & kept the idea for him to have that "Rio-Blast" looking mount for He-Man to sit in, MOTU fans would have gone CRAZY back in the day. All in all very interesting, MOTU is my favorite toy line ever to collect for & there is always new ground to uncover. I just saw a new one of a kind Skeletor prototype figure was found, with authentic purple He-Man legs(instead of the usual webbed feet).

💯👍🏻❤️🙏🧼 Love it! That lost figure looks like a one-off character from the original television series. I wonder what the writers would have done with him. More than they did with Stinkor, probably! There’s many an 80’s parent, I imagine, who wishes they’d released this instead of Stinkor. Best. Stay safe.
