Random Films...Writer/Actor and local Hoxton boy Martin Askew takes us on a personal journey back into the heart of his once solid working class community. Martin felt the need to make this short film before his beloved people are gone forever.

Martin I just finished watching your film on Amazon prime just now, it’s called “Snow in paradise”, I really enjoyed it, I done a little Google research on you and found out you are Muslim MaShaAllah. By the way I feel exactly as you do when I’m down Brick Lane and I see the so called “progression” the middle class hipsters imported into the area I was born in and where my dad first called home when you came to UK as a young boy, it’s truly heartbreaking that the working class locals in Hoxton and Brick Lane have been pushed out by these newcomers.

Thanks Martin, I'm not so interested in making films, especially of an area that has been changing over the last thirty years. Every since the late 80's a new breed of people have been moving into the area. It started more or less in Shoreditch High Street, cheep rents, comfortable access to anywhere in London by public transport, and most importantly, living like a subterranean, especially as a lot of them came from a different background. At first it was artistic folks, which I liked, I mean, I loved the Blue Note club, and the Bass clef, Hoxton Sq. Something that would never of happened if wasn't for outside people coming in. Now thirty years on, they have fashioned it to suit themselves. At the end of the day, they are creative, just like it was in Burbage's time. It's gone full circle. And you should know, as a writer, research, research, research. Me, I'm just a chef, I couldn't make a film for toffee, and if I did it, would probably be worse. Do it again, I bet you could improve it. Thanks Danny

Thanks for your constructive critic Danny, and I would love to do a more in-depth doco on my old community, a community I loved dearly to be honest with all it's faults. You don't know what you have until it's gone sometimes in life do you? Unfortunately the film and TV industry only seem to want to back upper middle class and Toff type projects today, it's become very elitist in terms of narratives. I will be going out and making more ”on Spec” type films about working class people and subjects that won’t get the funding in the mainstream, unless some philanthropist wants to sling a few quid at the likes of me. I only made the film because I was in another country and see how strong they are with traditions and culture, because after all the East End had a very rich culture, and not just what the posh boys want to project out and undermine. We don't need more films of soppy muggy Gangsters and two bob villains, or what I have labelled has ”Cockeny Porn” In my eyes the real people in those dirty back streets had more wealth and character than most people I've ever met around the world....And without sounding all poncy, i am now slightly more of a well traveled an wiser man...My East end will never die, it was hilariously funny, very loving and full of stand up men and women. Those people and the old place may now be a memory but they are still very much alive in my creative heart and soul. No more WAR!!...and peace to all :)

Maybe, try and include the "newbies" in your film, cover their take on Hoxton, bring your old mates in together. You know,* throwing the cat among the pigeons*, will make things very interesting.

I found him to be quite naive, not just about the Pitfield library, being the hub of the community, "if you wanted to read a book" I can never remember it bursting at the seams. Or about, loads and loads of flats, while he goes back to where he lived, where there is loads, and loads of flats. There have always been, from the 50's 60's, and 70's, loads, loads of flats. Or about The Hoxton trust community garden, which has been around as long as Cooks pie and mash shop, the next place he visits, that has, chili vinegar, something that we had at home when I was a kid, mum put it on her jellied eels. Or when he says, " you've got to keep the traditions", while sitting in a pie and mash shop, that surprisingly, he finds isn't a listed building, maybe, because it wasn't a pie shop before. But what I found most naive, is when he visits, Burbage school, named after,( he says) Charles Burbage the actor. Charles Burbage is an actor now, who he should of said was, Richard Burbage, who the school is really name after.

Thanks Danny, all the best mate. I wasn't doing it from an ultra intellectual side of the fence like yourself, I done the little short on what we down Hoxton call ”on Spec” I didn't plan it. You should go out there and make your own film, I'm sure it will be that much more refined than my off the cuff one mate and then we can have a meet up and compare... All the best, Martin :)

Big respect to you Martin, unfortunately this is the reality of Hoxton. My mum still lives there so I see it regularly. Last time I saw you we got thrown out of Arsenal for abusing Man U fans😂😂

Must of been a long time ago Micky or when it was all standing... It's all very polite hand clapping over the Arsenal now days...the west end theater is more hard core, everytime I go football I come out feeling very let down, I've experienced more atmosphere in a late night kebab shop!!! Football?? They've took that away from the working class too, sad...Hope you an your family all well mate :)
