About 55 years ago I was biking down the Kapiti beach and met an old Maori man, and I told him I was going to Para para umu. "Where?" " Para para umu sir." I replied slowly and carefully. "Oh, y'mean Parapar'um' ." When two vowels came together in a compound word, Maori dropped the first in fast everyday speech, and swallowed the vowel at the very end of the word , and from their Para-par'-um' early settlers got Paraparam. Nowadays people speak Victoria University 101 Maori, and old people who learnt kitchen Maori can hardly understand what they are talking about. Similarly Londoners don't say "Lon don" but "Lun'in" and North Islanders refer to "Crys'cherch"
Yes I agree and I can imagine listening to the sound exhaled. The islands people have a lovely pronounced version of Christchurch. Crys jhurch dropping bottom lip ○°( Sounds like a delicious food rolling around in their mouth. C r y s j h u r j h
Have you been 🚬 smoking something? I prefer to say Krissi-church rather than Christchurch just to be different. I also say Dunny-din just to annoy people.
@@danmclaughlin1180 Some American friends I told by email that I was from Dunedin, they thought it was pronounced like "Dunedaín" and asked if I was 90.
It's a pretty funny twist how it turns out the three fellas aren't even on the right island since every one else is looking for Tauranga and Pram, two north island towns.
Polish national here. I watched it once, didn't understand a word. Replayed but with subtitles on. Well, autogenerated subtitles didn't understand it either. Still fun.
I love the towns kickamoocow and whyfuckaround. They are the best places ever ! You kiwis have the best names for places! Had so much fun pissing off my kiwi hubby is we drove around kiwiland and me trying to pronounce the names in my best Aussie accent. Glad he still kept me though I think I pushed it a bit lol.
@@quaniraroa5991 The closes we have is Waikikamukau (why-kik-a-moo-kow) and maybe Whakatane or Whakapapa (wh pronounced F). There is a phrase 'whakaaro nui' in Maori which is the closes I can get to 'fuck around' but I don't think it is a place.
Ha ha ha Blinken Aussie °*) Whyfuckaround must be in roto-vegas Rotorua. And her hubby mention they in the bounds of (where the fuck are we ) Tribe of there . Poor the aboriginals ○°) living in Kickatinalong.

A "Maori Side Step" is when an opponent is charging at you ... instead of trying to side step around you ...he goes straight over you !!! Maori ( hard case) Side Step!!!
Im from Porirua - Titahi Bay was always called Teti Bay from older pakehas and when you pronounced it properly they always looked at you confused and then say "Oh you mean Teti Bay"
