Testing complete and it turns out well for the Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine. Dial into another Nutnfancy Bunker review with Tactical Doodle as we share our testing and opinions with you on this svelt carbine. Of course we'll revisit our love for the M1 Carbine in general; it remains an outstanding, battle-tested design. Perhaps you have a collectible version like us that you don't won't to crank a whole lot of rounds through. That was the impetus for us to get the AO version.

How does it stack up against a war proven WW II era original Inland Mfg M1 Carbine in accuracy, build quality, price, features, and reliability? We had a disastrous experience with a modern production Inland Mfg M1C and it was pitched. Will Auto Ordnance emerge from the pack as the modern version we've been looking for?

Thank you again Nutn' for yet again another excellent GRV." Comfortably Plumb "Such an awesome system. It is hard these days to think outside the bottom line as far as a gun that fits all philosophies. This was my grandfather's gun in ww2. He was d-day +6, he said there was so much confusion while loading the boat to go to shore he lost his carbine. He landed on the beaches with no weapon. He eventually found one, and ended up driving a supply truck on the red ball express. A few years back, my Dad and I bought him one and had it engraved with "the missing gun".

This video led me to buy an Auto Ordnance AOM130 from Brownells. Out of the box I was getting light primer strikes and sent it back to Auto Ordnance under warranty. They fixed it at absolutely no cost to me and now it runs like a top! I love the M1 Carbine and this little guy will help me preserve my WWII Inlands. You gotta love a 78+ year old design that still just plain works. My new AOM130 came with a type 2 barrel band so I didn't have the issues that Nutn and TD had with the sling. Thanks for the review guys!

Auto Ordnance comes almost spot- on- true to the D-Day Issue M1 Carbine. "Four hole" hand guards, bayonet lugs, adjustable rear sights, round bolts, etc., were early 1950s armory "improvements." There's an authority on the M1, here in my home town, who's written two books on the M1 Carbine. His last name is 'Ruth," and the books are "War Baby," and "War Baby II".

The very front tip of the stock that is tucked under the barrel looked just wrong to me on the Auto Ordnance. Should be more rounded and shorter. They should put a better copy of a stock on those! I have a real carbine (1944 Inland Div. of General Motors) and there's just no substitute. I did happen to have one of the new "fake Inlands" like they complained about here and had no more trouble with it than a real carbine. I sold it but not because it malfunctioned. They must have got a lemon. I will say the new Inland mags and real carbine mags do not interchange very well. I had both the real Inland and the fake Inland for a while at the same time. I found that the real GI mags would not catch in the mag well of the fake Inland. And the fake Inland mags would entirely eject down to the ground or floor/ground when I tried to chamber a round, every time. They would catch and stay in the mag well but stay only if I didn't try to rack the action!! Weird!!

I'm glad to see you guys make the 357 Magnum lever gun comparison. My dad had a couple of Korean war-era Surplus M1 carbines when I was a kid. Some of the guys that went out shooting with us were Vietnam veterans and they just turn their noses up at those things they would say stuff like at 300 yards the bullets would just get stuck in the flak vest. My dad told me to think of it as a pistol with a stock in a long barrel not as a short rifle
@nutnfancy
@nutnfancy 5 лет назад
I definitely get that and the pistol comment is exactly what it was designed as. It’s better than getting issued a 1911 as your primary if you’re running some kind of equipment back then. Close in it’s alright, I wonder how much better it could do with more modern cartridge design. -Doodle

An M1 Carbine is really not much useful beyond 100 yd. The issue sights are 100-300 yd, which is absurd. The cartridge is not for far reach either, but they are more effective for energy in. soft point. I have hand loaded a LOT of .30 Carbine.
@loboheeler

The army could not train many soldiers to shoot pistols, so came up with the carbine design. Amazing how fast it was developed and put into large scale production. 6 million made, which is the most US small arms ever made.
@jason200912

The truth behind it was that the m1 carbine isn't that accurate and so GIs got irritated that they were missing and blamed the caliber for not piercing a coat. Which was a lie.

Walked into my local gun store in Cody Wyoming and walked out with an M1 Carbine, 11 magazines, and 150 rounds of 30 carbine. And a bayonet. I picked it up off the consignment rack and could'nt put it down, so i bought it. 800 bucks. Receiver made in September 1944 with an Inland General Motors barrel. Probably not all numbers matching but i don't care about that. It shoots great and makes me happy.

Having shot several M1 Carbines over the years, the only one I can recall being outright bad was a Universal M1 Carbine. But that was just that one example. The other 3 I shot worked well or relatively well as far as M1 Carbines go. I owned an Inland M1 Carbine(new manufacture), before I sold it I had at least 6,500 rounds through it of various types and brands. I kept good records on what I shot, of how much, and what gave me trouble. And I can tell you, that out of the 6,500 or so the only issues I encountered were as follows... Hornady Critical Defense, tried 2 boxes and between failures to feed, and eject, I had failures to extract and fire out of 50 rounds. Perhaps they were bad boxes, but never touched the stuff after that. PPU loaded JSP's, 100 rounds tested and out of 100 I probably had 15 failures, all failures to feed because the bullets were not properly seated and some were too long and others too short to make it up the feed ramp. And lastly, was with some MagTech JSP's. Out of 300 rounds, only had 6 that failed to feed. But that's it... Tula Steel, Israeli surplus FMJ/JSP, Federal FMJ/JSP, Remington FMJ/JSP, PPU FMJ, MagTech FMJ, Aguila FMJ/JSP, and Hornady Custom XTP's all fed and fired properly, no issues. I kept it cleaned and well oiled and it ran fine. I said this same thing(though with less rounds at the time) back in your original review. You always say, you're a sample size of one. Well, this is my sample size of one. I can find at least 2 others I know personally who would give you similar experiences. The Auto Ordnance guns do work though and cost about $300 less than the Inlands on average. If you just want an M1 Carbine for a project gun or a shootable piece of history without paying "collector" prices it's definitely a better buy than taking a chance on an old Iver Johnson or Universal model. While I never had issues with Iver Johnsons or the majority of Universals I've fired I will say I have not fired them as extensively as I had my Inland. Though I had at least 2,000 rounds down an Iver Johnson for sure and cant recall any sort of issue.

The original mag pouch on the stock was a belt mag pouch. Something the troops thought of to carry more ready mag loaded ammo rather than constantly using stripper clips to load the magazines during a fire fight. The carbine was already light weight and the extra weight didn’t make a big difference as compared to having more accessible loaded magazines.

Turbocharged UT you will not see these days again. The days of milsurps being imported are dying. When they do come in they are bought up by a few and held and trickled out so the supply can be controlled. Not everything is bad news those. Today is the golden age of ARs. These days (just like the days of $89 sks and $140 m1 carbine) will not last forever. You can buy or build Very good and reliable ARs for very little money. One day we will look back and say, “I was a fool for not buying more when they were cheap” just like we all say about milsurps of yesteryear. The only thing that will change the AR market is politics. I hope it doesn’t happen. If it don’t great times could last and even get better. With that said it can change as fast as Snapping your fingers.

Great review on this little piece of history. I asked my father what weapons he carried in the Korean war as a first Lieutenant. Naturally he had been issued a 1911 Colt, but his issue rifle was the little carbine you reviewed. I suspect he had chosen it because of its light weight. I asked him how he liked it and was surprised to hear his reply. While in training he had recieved his expert marksman medal. I think he was pleased with that accomplishment because he reveled in teaching me basic marksmanship . I brought this up because of what he then told me. While suffering through a bitter winter in Korea his company came under attack by what was described as a red wave. As this horde of Chi-com soldiers stormed his position he said how surprised he was by how big they were. He said as he fired at them he could see puffs of dirt fly off their big quilted overalls confirming he had shot them! But to his dismay they kept attacking and required that he shoot them several more times before they went down. But he said that's not why he hated the gun. He said he hated it because even after cleaning and oiling the gun, it would jamb with just the slightest amount of dirt. Something that was impossible to avoid in Korea.. But his biggest problem occurred when during a firefight in the cold, the lubricating oil they had been issued, froze the bolt closed! The tiny charging handle was impossible to grip with gloves, so in freezing conditions he took his gloves off and still couldn't get the bolt open! He said he tried peeing on it but couldn't pee because he was in the middle of a firefight! So in his desperation he grabbed the gun by the barrel and started kicking down on the charging handle. After several hard kicks he was able to get the bolt to unlock..... only to have the gun go full auto.... as he was holding it by the barrel! He said it almost took his head off! He was able to get back in the fight only to be wounded. He was subsequently wounded in three other firefights thus receiving 4 purple hearts. He said when the attack was repelled and things calmed down, he took his m1 carbine and smashed it on some rocks and then had ordinance issue him a BAR! I hope you enjoyed this little story, just after we celebrated Memorial day!

Love these reviews but, in this particular case, I have to offer a differing viewpoint. I've owned my AOM-130 for about 18 months now. My experience has been a bit different. Frequent jams and stovepipes, even after over 1,000 cycles and a trip back to the factory. Comparing notes with other owners, the quality control seems to be hit or miss. My particular rifle is very persnickety about both ammo (loves Hornady Critical Defense and Tula steel case - hates everything else I've tried) and mags (KCI mags work better than anything else I've tried - the factory mags are a nightmare). It noticeably improved around the 300 cycle point, but it still can't get through 50 rounds without a malfunction. Have ordered a stiffer recoil spring from Wolff, hoping that will help. But as it stands, no way would I use this particular for any kind of self-defense or other critical type of work. It's just not reliable. Glad your rifle works, but there are many of us out here with very disappointing results out of the box.

I bought my AOM140 Carbine in 2015. It did not come with a sling, so I had none of the problems you talked about with the sling. The rifle functions perfectly. The only ammo I have used is Armscor and Aguila. BTW, the ammo pouch on the sling was originally designed to be hooked onto a GI belt. Some GI thought up the way it could be used on the buttstock of the carbine. Mine does not allow a 15rd mag to fit in the rear pocket, so I put a 10 round mag there. I bought reproduction sling (forgot where). My brother-in-law has a Saginaw original carbine, which he got for $50, from a co-worker who was behind on his alimony payments. He also has an original WWII M-1 Garand. I have not looked it over to see who made it, etc. I put electrical tape on the sling hardware to avoid marring the stock, just as you did. Great review; glad to see it show up on my computer. Thinking of getting an adjustable rear sight like yours, but they are very pricey. I have recently started watching the Combat TV series on my computer. The platoon leader Lieut. Handley uses his M-1 carbine frequently in many episodes. The squad leader, Sgt. uses a M-1928 Thompson SMG. I hate to see the way it gets tossed around like a used bean can.

Mistake on my comments: Mine is an AOM130. Also, I wonder who would want a bayonet on his carbine; imagine a Banzai charge, with the enemy carrying his Arisaka, with about 12" bayonet. Unless the enemy was very groggy from drinking too much sake, you would not be able to reach his body before he ran you through. BTW, I use my late wife's response app.; didn't change it after she passed away, because I like keeping her name alive.

When reloading this cartridge, it is VERY IMPORTANT to properly size the case length, and the overall cartridge length... these two critical factors allow proper chamber seating for consistent function. Even some factory ammo is off specs, causing problems and you think the gun is crap... but its the ammo first, the magazines second, causing problems...that is why I reload and keep case length/ overall cartridge length spec tight...very few function problems.

The m1 has more issues if the spring pushes to hard against the bolt and makes it misfire. Couldn't shoot any big mags till the spring in the action was changed out. Worked great after that. I am not the only one who had that issue. The guy I took it to knew right away y it was jamming and what to do. Wish I asked him what spring he used because it never failed for thousands of rounds after that. Had a 15@30 round mags if I rember right. Was long ago and the gunsmith is long gone. If I ever get another one I will try them till I get the perfect size spring.

I have three original M1 carbines and I love them! I have thought about buying a new production but I was concerned that they wouldn't be exactly like the original and/or would be unreliable. I may seriously consider this one.

An interesting comparison would be one that pits the M1 carbine against a modern pistol-caliber carbine such as the Ruger PC carbine.

Really been wanting an M1 Carbine for a while now, and most originals I've seen at gun shows are well beyond my justifiable budget... and they're originals, so I'd be afraid to actually do anything with it. I've also been a bit miffed at the lack of in-depth reviews on the Auto-Ordnance version, but now that there is, I think I might just put my next paycheck and tips towards an AO M1.

It’s always a pleasure to see Mrs. Nut’n joining the frey. An intelligent and attractive brunette who knows her way around a firearm. You’re a lucky man. Regarding the M1C, I’d have one if ammo was cheaper. Once I start reloading, I may pick one up. I always loved these. My favorite rifle of WW II.

I bought an AO M1 Carbine about 30 years ago. It is flawless performing. Just took it out today after reading some negative reviews. I fired two 15 round mags and a 30 round mag. Slow fire, rapid fire without a single problem. It's been my favorite shooter for years. I hit consistently at 300 yards. Everyone that tries it falls in love with it.

One big important thing a lot of people neglect about the M1 carbine, is that it was never meant to fill the role of a rifle, it was meant to be something bigger and better than a pistol, a large secondary weapon. This is meant to replace your Glock or 1911, not your AR or AK or M1 Garand. However, in states you can't have ARs or AKs, it may be the next best thing. Many people are also unaware that the M1 Carbine is meant to be holstered on your side (like a handgun), not slung on your back, but can do either.

I've been subbed to this channel for I don't know how long. It may well be the very first channel I ever subbed to, and I've been on YT since forever. I do not understand how Nutn doesn't have a million subs. Conscientious, thorough, honest information on a wide variety of gear and other topics. His heart is in the right place on all the issues that matter to gear enthusiasts and 2A people. Not much I can do about but I think it's kinda sad that so many lesser channels have more subs. You do deserve it Nutn.

My first memory of the M1 Carbine is that it always seemed to be in the hands of the bad guys in the Six Million Dollar Man. I've wanted one ever since, but I heard nothing but horror stories about modern production guns until now. Looks like I'll be buying another gun soon. "thanks", guys. :)

Shoot your AO carbine and then tear it down and look for metal displacement. I had a AO and after 50 rounds of factory Aguilar ammo I had severe metal displacement on the bolts operating lug. Shipped it back to AO, and when it came back it had a letter that nothing was wrong with the gun, but somewhere along the way my barrel developed a ring in it, that wasn’t their when I shipped it back.

A Very UNDERRATED Carbine & Cartridge.... Check your ballistics table, guys... the .30 carbine cartridge SMOKE'S a .357 magnum. A standard .30 carb. 110 fmj runs 1990 fps at the muzzle. A hot .357 runs 1500 fps at the muzzle. At 100 yards, .30 carbine puts over 620 ft.lbs of energy on target. A .357 does that at 25 yard's. This is an old & outdated comparison. In truth, there IS NO comparison! .30 carbine whoops a .357 like a stepchild. I like your banter. But you need to stay focused on the gun you're featuring. You're all over the map! I have to remind myself you're reviewing the Auto Ordnance model 130 M1 Carbine. (I'm not hating on you guy's. Constructive criticism only!)

My auto ordinance was not what I expected brand new out of the box. It was a jam-o matic I sent it back to auto ordinance, they replaced the extractor sent back worked fine through 46 rounds then the problem came back. Sent it to Fulton armory because the warranty had just run out. Fulton told me the They replaced it with a very old used bolt and the extractor doesn’t even fit he was surprised it would shoot at all. Anyway waiting on the bolt hopefully it will work then. Good luck

I love carbines. I personally never buy new made ones but prob wouldn’t mind if it ran flawless. As you mentioned most of what I will say, They are the perfect ban state rifle for HD. Close range the .30 round is great. Low recoil so follow up shots are fast and really anyone can shoot it since it’s tame. No scary pistol grips, or flash hiders to make you look bad if you do end up using it in defense shooting. If you need good 10 round mags they are available as well. I personally am using an arsenal refinished rock-ola that I don’t mind shooting because it’s prob got many replacement parts so it’s not 100% original. Gun and mag springs are easily able to buy to freshen it up. Stupid simple controls, you can rack it with your pinky. Such a great fun gun. Usgi parts are everywhere and affordable as well and are all compatible. Once you take it apart a couple times they are very easy to completely tear down yourself and put back together

If you guys like reviewing WW2 guns then some recommendations would be the GSG STG44 chambered in .22lr, GSG MP40 9mm Pistol, or the Auto Ordnance reproduction of a Thompson Submachine gun. I think it'd be cool to review a Thompson from Auto Ordnance because I remember Nutn telling a story about his dad when he served in Vietnam and that he saw a sleeping ARVN guard who had a chrome plated Tommy gun with him and Auto Ordnance sells a couple of Thompsons that are chrome plated. That'd probably be a cool family gun to keep around as a reminder of your dad Nutn. Keep up the great work. You convinced me to seriously consider the Auto Ordnance M1 carbine as my next collectible rifle.
@nutnfancy
@nutnfancy 5 лет назад
We’ve come close a few times but we’ve been waiting for a good deal. They’re very cool but limited in use for the thompsons. Still haven’t seen an mp40 yet, but I have been watching that stv redux project in 7.62 for a bit. The only WWII rifle on the docket would be the para m1 carbine coming up. It’s a cool market but not a lot of interest for most folks. -Doodle
