@@hereef1 Consider Richard Pryor's personal history, the time when this film came out, and the subject matter. That's why I made the comment that it was more than just acting by Pryor in this scene.
RIP and long live Max Julien (July 12, 1933 - January 1, 2022), aged 88 And RIP and long live Richard Pryor (December 1, 1940 - December 10, 2005), aged 65 You both will always be remembered as legends.
it WAS real. I watched the documentary with some of the actors and the cast and Pryor was high on cocaine throughout the movie and in this scene and was having flashbacks of his own real life run ins with the police when he was growing up. Notice how goldie (Max Julian) just looks fed up and walks away? That wasn’t planned. It’s because pryor was filled with coke and flipping out low key but it still worked for the scene oddly enough because he stayed in context with what was going on lol
Yes because Richard Pryor actually did this scene with no script written because he was high and showed up late on the set that's why Max Julien Walk away from him the he did because everyone was pissed off
Richard was always mad at the directors of this movie, he said that they cut out his best scenes. One can only wonder what those scenes may have added to this already brilliant flick.
This scene was unscripted. Richard showed up late and high. And everyone was pissed at him. Notice how Max Julien walked away. They left the camera running, and captured one of Richard Pryors best acting scenes!!!
@@viralbuthow000 the demons is what make some folk entertaining ... in this case very entertaining, , pryors expression of demons n reality make great entertainment
I grew up just outside of Oakland, where and when this movie was shot. Pryor was going through tough times then, rewriting this script (not getting paid), high on cocaine all the time, re-living his growing-up years. When this movie came out a lot of people related to the truth of black life in the inner city. Pryor's scene is classic because it just didn't fit the role....I believe the moment was personally his, in his life, as well.
They wasn't Richard Pryor actually did this scene with no script written because he was high and showed up late on the set that's why Max Julien Walk away from him like he did because everyone in the film was pissed off at Richard Pryor
This is Oscar winning material!! In this scene Richard displayed real emotion, like this was a real event. Even before he said his lines, his facial expression made you feel that he thought they were going to shoot him. Its hard to explain but this is one of my favorite scenes in this movie and also one of my favorites of any movie. R.I.P Richard Pryor.
Corey A. Moore Richard was a genius with non verbal communication. Too bad that his talents and the talents of many actors only went as far as these kinds of movies.
Richard pryor actually did this scene with no script written because he was high and showed up late on the set of the movie that's why Max Julien Walk away from him like he did
totally agree, this movie came out my senior year of high school 73" it was 1st time i heard of Richard Pryor. Among me and my boys at the time. This was THE SCENE of all scenes in the movie.
Similar situation happen to my friends and I circa mid 80s Brooklyn. Pryor’s acting was so brilliant and resonated with me so much teared up. Whole movie had many outstanding performances for a blaxploitation piece.
Love him Richard Pryor best actor should've won at least 4 Oscars. The best my Favorite actor all times. Actor a true actor play all kinds of parts, Actor.
"I ain't running no where cause I ain't no track star." LMAO. RICHARD was a bad dude. "They pulled down on us, Goldie." That's real emotions there. Richard was getting pushed around for real. like some of you commented, I don't think he was acting. And catch how smooth Goldie turned and walked away. Some people say he was mad at how Richard was acting out on the set and just walked away from the scene. Lmao idk about that but it was smooth and this is gold.
I know he was high when he did this scene. I know... I know... I know... But this is one of the best scenes in movie history. Richard Pryor brought the real in this scene.
You didn't see all of it. Brother Pryor went the fuck off. he. was crying. I love Richard. Then you gotta ask how high was he. either way he broke the roof off. I'm still upset he's gone
This was and remains a very important film but there are some urban myths that are crazy but I hope this helps clear up a few. 1. Richard Pryor who is to me the greatest comedian of all time was so high during the movie that the ending had to be rewritten because he was off the set after slugging the director. That's why only his accordion is seen at the end. 2. Robert Poole wrote the Mack BUT Richard Pryor had to help re-write the dialogue for his character, he also received little if any payment. compensation because they did not have a formal agreement. 3. He was sky high or drunk during the movie constantly. He had a sock with a metal object in it ready to strike the producer but the producer's wife intervened. So he left and went back to LA this is after he punched the director. 4. Frank Ward was killed, shot to death in a Rolls Royce along with one of his women. The Ward Brothers are in the movie and were straight up street guys who Goldie was partially based on. 5. Max Julien attended Howard University and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He was the one that got Richard Pryor involved because they were good friends. Max Julien's Mom was killed in DC during a street robbery so he brought some of his experiences in DC to the movie and Goldie's love for his Mother and her death was influenced by his life. 4. It may have cost $120k which is ($750k in today's dollar) to produce but they made over $3 million (which is about $17.5 million today). So yeah the movie was a success. 5. The Black Panthers and the Ward Brothers were fighting in Oakland and the set had armed guards due to their feud over Oakland streets. Huey Newton and Bobby Seale protested the movie and were somewhat successful in their efforts. The movie is historic and really complex because it's not just about a pimp or "Mack" it's a lot of issues being discussed. Peace
