Join me as I take you behind the velvet ropes of Watches and Wonders 2024 in Geneva, for the trade aspect of the show. Not your typical watch industry professional, I managed to snag an exclusive invite, courtesy of A Lange & Sohne. From uncovering the secrets behind a vintage watch inherited from my father, my Bremont fascination, to spontaneous late-night conversations with key players in the industry, this video is my personal insight from a layman’s perspective on the world of high-end horology.

My real-life exposure to watches is visiting small watch stores and boutiques in a mall, which gives the impression that watches are a small niche luxury product. The very impressive over-the-top displays at Watches and Wonders show how big, important and innovative the watch industry is, and thus gives me a much greater appreciation for watches. As a side note, IWC, JLC, VC etc. boutiques in a mall gives the ordinary pubic a dream to aspire for a better life even if most cannot afford luxury watches. But malls who have don't have luxury products just feel like a Walmart. So luxury products stores also have an important intangible benefit to the public. Watching Watches and Wonders videos gives me a greater appreciation of life even though I can't afford these watches.

I was thinking of you when the change of direction at Bremont happened as I'm sure most of your followers were as well. This has been my favorite W&W episode all week as you're representing "us". What a magnificent piece that Piaget is. I was really turned onto them by a Watchfinder episode mid-Covid when Andrew described the artistry of the jewelry and metalwork artistry they have mastered there. You have an absolute stunner with quite a bit of history. Thank you for sharing the journey!

Great storytelling, as always. Thank you. It was interesting to hear about the optimism of the new Bremont management, as given the March Swiss watch export numbers (-16% on average), with export to China and Hong Kong falling over 40% at the same time, it would seem that even preserving the sales numbers would be a great feat. Add to this pretty stubborn inflation numbers in the EU, Great Britain and the US, where more FED speakers recently leave "higher for longer" option on the table, and the situation on the luxury goods market does not give too many reasons for optimism. Obviously, the high-fliers as AP and Patek, would probably not feel the pinch, as much as the mid-tier brands. Speaking about Patek, I cannot get that silly thought out of my mind, but the newly introduced Bremont logo, looks like an attempt to subconsciously raise an association with the Calatrava Cross :) Silly me ... Cheers!

To get that personal invite from A. Lange you must be quite a good customer of theirs! And it's interesting that your flight companion has been to Watches and Wonders "for many years" 5:15 since it was only created by Rolex, Patek and Richemont in 2022. Maybe he was conflating it with SIHH or Basel. And I would take Christopher Ward's redesigned logo over Bremont's 8:40. Great story about your father's watch 16:00.

Wow that assessment of your father’s watch at the end was wonderful to see and must have been a thrill for you! I am curious of the assigned value at this point, though the limited history available would likely preclude any accuracy in value. Anyway, really great adventure all told. Thanks for sharing!

My family asked me the same question, after I shared this information with them. I haven’t asked / enquired from anyone as to the likely value. I felt it would sully the conversation and it’s largely irrelevant anyway.

That is certainly my experience. In fact, I had a really lovely chat with one of the experienced admin team at Patek, late on my second day. It was quiet in the booth and I was marvelling at their new World Time. It’s gorgeous and I kept going back to it. She encouraged me to go to the boutique in London and register to buy one, and expressed genuine surprise when I explained how I had tried previously with a different watch (with an appointment) but being turned away in spite of requesting to buy a £60K watch was low on my list of things to do. Watches and Wonders was, for me a fabulous watch environment, absent the usual brusque retail attitude worn by the sales staff.

Bremont is done. Pretty much everything the English brothers have built has been paused or scaled back. Ditching the Trip-tick which is a huge part of the brands identity is just a move to save money by buying a less complex cases overseas. The watches are cheaper but they’re are still expensive for the specs you’re getting and they’re competing in a price segment with brands like Longines and Nomos who have access to better movements. I don’t want Bremont to die but I just can’t see these watches selling well. According to Mike Razak from A blog to watch even Bremonts AD’s are not happy with this new direction either.

@@watchenthusiastlondon I hope so too. I have followed the brand for many years and even visited The Wing last year and was very impressed. While I’m sure the new watches aren’t terrible build quality wise they do look incredibly bland and soulless.

Dont you thin the design and name of the supermarine is a little bit too close to another famous divers watch? I am surprised, that you talk so highly about bremont, when they seem to have little innovation. Rolex and Lange, both watches you like, have extreme innovations and craftmanship. Bremont seems a little bit like a homage brand, as opposed to something people are passionate about. See I don't want to bash the brand, I just can't see the unique factor that there is. Omega is often compared as a "cheaper" alternative to Rolex, but he Moonwatch and Seamasters are totally standalone pieces, that one would never mistake for a Rolex. But when I see the Supermarine, I can't think of anything, exept that they want them to be as similar as as submariner as possible wihtout facing backlash for copying or even a lawsuit. I would love to hear your opinion on this. Sheers from Switzerland

As a long time Bremont fan, I really liked the unique aspects of the brand: their patented trip tick case construction, design elements, an 80% Bremont manufactured movement, bringing watchmaking back onto British shores etc. There was plenty of innovation. However, none of that is present in the new ranges of watches. As I say, it’s Bremont in name only. The design elements are all new. That’s not to say that Bremont 2.0 is no good; it’s just different from Bremont yesterday. Whether I happen to like the new watches is a separate issue. As to “unique”, the new case design is deliberately unique. If you were to handle the watches, it might become more apparent. Difficult to appreciate in photos/video.

Total decline for Bremont. The new pieces are just crap. I could go into nauseating detail as to why but I’m exhausted talking about it. Needless to say Bremont is gone. The new company has nothing to do with what went before. ‘Unique and distinctive’ .. no, they WERE unique and distinctive .. they are now bland, generic and derivative. They now look like every other watch in a microbrand line up. Certina and Yema come to mind when viewing the new Supermarine. And the fact that they f***ed up the size of the logo on the 38mm Terra nova so you can’t see the hands at 10:10 without it covering held the logo is terrible. Also, the middle of the center seconds hand on that watch means you can see the canon pinion poking through .. they didn’t even bother to cap the minute hand?!? .. these are rookie errors. I shall always treasure my Kingsman watch, but I must admit to being somewhat heartbroken over what has happened. I’ve made several videos on my Bremont pieces on my RU-vid page so my interest and excitement in the company is well documented. What a shame 😢

Many thanks for taking us along on your adventure at Watches & Wonders. It is amazing to me that your watch was only 1 of 6 made. Truly special and a great remembrance of your Dad. Perhaps it's unfair to be too critical of Belmont at this early stage in their new management. I find that marketing is most likely directed to a younger demographic. It has to be a bit intimidating to stand with the great giants of old world watchmaking.
