Wait that makes sense now. Since Jon isnt really human anymore, his body is really something hes familiar with anymore. That's why his rib anchor didnt work. His role as the official "Archivist" title, is tied to the tape recorders (judging by them randomly popping up, it seems mr giant eye has taken a liking to them. Or maybe it always had), so that's why they were a better anchor than his own rib. It makes sense!

It's weird and interesting that Jon seems to be the only Avatar that doesn't passively draw audio errors from the Tapes. They only go static-y when he does something that directly triggers his powers - healing, compelling, etc.... Is that because the tapes are an extension of him/the eye? i mean, it'd make sense, but it's still interesting.

I like the idea of The Extinction incorporating aspects of the other Entities, as it would essentially erase at least most of them if it succeeded. And other Fear Entities may eventually take their places before The Extinction started over again.

i try not to bring spoilers into earlier episodes but i've been thinking about this a lot lately and i never see anyone talking about it. spoilers for season 5 okay it's generally accepted that making jon think he could use his rib as an anchor was manipulation by the web to a) get him marked by the flesh and b) give him enough confidence to go into the coffin and get marked by the buried. i sometimes see people who assume the tape recorders are what got jon out of the buried, but i think by now most people agree that martin's presence while placing the recorders on the coffin is what got him out. we've seen before that human connection used as an emotional anchor has saved people for the entities, and by the end of season 4 we see that jon and martin's love for each other is one such anchor. so why bother with the tape recorders in the first place, if martin spending some time near the coffin was enough to pull jon out? well, jonah's plan is to keep martin isolated long enough to use him as both bait to get jon into the lonely, and then let him be the key that gets jon back out and vise versa. so if the web wants to use martin as the key to get out of the buried now without throwing off the plan, it has to be sneaky. if martin knew that his and jon's feelings for each other were strong enough to pull jon out of the buried, i think martin would probably tell peter to go get stuffed after how long he's been strung along and go back to the archive with jon. both the eye and the web would have to make alternate arrangements for that lonely mark. so the web influences martin into taking the tapes, which appear to work, and martin goes back to peter, fed up with his continued vagueness and his broken promise to protect jon, and is finally brought in on the extinction research, further isolating him. jon continues his risky behaviour that leads him to check off more marks. things stay on track for the eye and the web so they can keep jon and martin apart until the power of love is more conducive to their plans. in closing, jonmartin real, and also fuck the web, all my homies hate the web.

There's a lot to unpack in this one and a lot of questions it raises for me about the world and the fears... What makes avatars like the Lucas's want to bring their entity into the world? With the strangers or the corruption I can understand. It is a world more suited to them. But I have trouble seeing how a world of complete isolation is something any human would desire. I will say I knew from the beginning the end wouldn't bother with a ritual considering in theory everything just eventually ends anyway. The web kinda makes sense too since you won't have minds to manipulate if no one is normal anymore.

Mostly unrelated to this episode but the desolation statement reminded me of a scp story where they switch reality’s to a flesh apocalypse which made me realise the Magnus archives is just the scp foundation but with bad funding and less science

I think it's interesting that SA/r*p* is not one of the fears. It makes me think that it is so frightening/uncomfortable to talk about irl that the writers didn't want to include it.

This fear hit so close to home. I started crying towards the end of the statement. More than any other fears combined I’m afraid of everything on our planet going extinct, and being replaced by something with no way of learning from our mistakes. Or even learning we were here at all

I just want Martin to let it all out, man's probably been defusing the hell out of himself in order not to break or lose his sturdy façade for even a moment. Honestly, all of them need such a break. I need all of them to healthily express their feelings once (I know I know, it's a horror podcast and yes I am a sucker for angst but that doesn't mean I can't root for them q8fh2osw7ge)

Peter has such strong characterization this episode. Really great writing and incredible voice acting!! The non-threatening but slightly sinister tone to his voice is incredible. Hes such a love to hate him character

After having gone through these episodes in one big go, I can hear all the joy gone from Martin's voice. These truly are top tier episodes
