I can't explain it but this made me cry. The end of an era. The end of the natural gives way to the digital age. And I mean, it sounds beautiful. But it's almost sad, it's almost as if something was lost. But that's life, the past is lost to the present. Something gained, but something lost.
That's not accurate at all mate. If you think no recording studio ever touched up the singer's voice before this point, you need to research a little more. And we're not even talking about digital effects, they were doing analog ones and messing with recordings since a long, long time ago. What has really changed is a) how many of these tools are available to the mixing aficionados and b) how much attention we pay to music to the point pitch correction is very common nowadays and we don't realize it.

theres no need to draw arbitrary distance between the natural world and the digital one, theyre all just part of the same big natural world. we didnt invent the materials to make computers, they have always been hiding in mountains and waiting for us to find them. idk, i mean feel how you want but theres just so much more positivity that can be drawn from the digital age and i want people to be happy and enjoy it

The tool has improved since then, and in many cases its use is absolutely transparent. Most mainstream music uses AT pitch correction features. What has changed since the 90s is how overexposed we've been to overdone AT.

The amazing thing to me is that autotune just doesn’t sound good on certain voices. Even talented singers can sound all disjointed and weird on autotune. I don’t know what it is; there must be something about the timbre and low vibrato voice of Cher, because she sounds CONSISTENTLY GOOD on autotune, despite not even needing it. Something about her voice was just made for pairing with autotune.
Does anyone know what was the name of the autotune she used? Like how would I google it to see the exact software or hardware that she used? Not the current modern day unit but the exact one she used.
The version was just the very first release of Auto-Tune. The actual name of the software is just Auto-Tune, but the company's name that produces it is Antares. The very newest version, called AutoTune Pro, has a "Classic" mode that mimics the old days of Auto-Tune, which would be closer to the version you see in this video. Unfortunately, the version you see in the video is far outdated and likely no longer available and even if it were, it might not work properly in modern DAWs. I can't see Pro Tools or Cubase loading this old thing... but that's okay. Just grab AutoTune Pro, and enable the Classic mode and you're all set.
