Rosy. It was a great time for Independent Games with zero budget. Silkys, the Daily Click. Check out the game Destruction Carnival. Still an awesome Smash TV homage. Derek and John always made great games. Some of their games not mentioned were the Trigger Happy 2 demo and I really think their snowball fight game deserves an HD remake. Klick & Play was such an important part of my childhood. I just wish I had more friends to collaborate with at that time.

Thanks to everyone for supporting us through the production of our "Rediscovering Mystery" series. It was wonderful to take the time to dive into The Witness, Spelunky, and Frog Fractions 1 & 2. We hope you enjoyed them. For those who don't know yet, our next AAA project is (*drum roll*) FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. We just returned from a week long shoot in Tokyo and are working hard to get that finished for early June. In the meantime, we'll have a bunch of interesting smaller clips we filmed at GDC last month (also Danny is going on his honeymoon and is looking forward to not staring at Adobe Premiere for a few weeks). We'll have plenty more behind the scenes stuff up for patrons too. Thank you all for helping us reach 100k subscribers only six months after we started this channel. We're absolutely stunned and humbled by your viewership. We have some incredibly exciting projects coming for the next six months, so we hope you stick around. - Danny & Jeremy

Enjoy your time off - it's much deserved with the truly high quality of these documentaries! If there's ever the opportunity open, you guys should try to do some docs on older games as members on the team are available - like 80s-early 00s - would be really cool to see an in-depth look back with some new interviews and insights to really popular and more obscure games that may have been forgotten. (btw, would love to see a Falcom doc sometime in the far flung future :) )

I remember my brother buying Spelunky on the Playstation store and I was kind of critical of him saying there were plenty of AAA/big titles to buy, but I ended up playing it. I liked the game enough, but I couldn't get through the mines initially. I kept trying, and kept learning the game. Eventually I honed in on the skills/knowledge to get to, and ultimately through, Hell. The further I got, the more I appreciated the secrets and thoughtfulness that went into the game. Not much in gaming matches the satisfaction of emerging victorious from the other side of Hell in Spelunky! Now I consider it in the top 10 games I've ever played. It's so fun, and has so much replay value, and you never know what will happen on any given run. Anyone watching this who hasn't played it, it's a must.

If I were one of the people behind Klick and Play(sp?), I would feel really proud watching this video. I actually came away with more of an appreciation for that tool and tools like it than the games themselves. It's just awesome to think about how much it helped aspiring developers and game designers at the time find a way to express their creativity and find a community.

Amen, it's why I get annoyed at people who rag on Game Maker, if nothing more it gets people (like me) into game development, even if it's at an entry level.
@animowany111
@animowany111 7 лет назад
I do believe that Game maker is a nice tool to get started with, if you don't already have programming knowledge. However one thing that annoys me is the amount of "big" indie games written in Game maker. For example, Risk of Rain. In RoR you experience frequent crashes, lag issues, bugs due to engine limitations, which could be avoided by using another language + game engine. But yeah, game maker is perfect for simple games when you're learning, like RPGs or classic game clones.

This was a real nice treat! I remember Derek Yu from way back during those K&P-Days, back then he was someone that I think a lot of people looked up to a lot. Even his really early work stood out in the K&P-scene as really good stuff. I was doing a bunch of smaller games and working on a bigger top down death match style shooter in The Games Factory (the sequel to K&P) with a friend I made over in the US. Blastorama Games we called ourselves. And I remember Derek showed off some screens from Eternal Daugther on the forums and everyone was really really blown away and excited, I think for like years after that. I was always wondering why it was taking so long for it to come out, seems like it was years in the making, and this does shed some light into that. Even though these applications are very intuitive and easy to work with. Making something like eternal daugther or more advanced stuff, really does take a lot of skill.

Man, I bought Spelunky in June 2014, and I'm still playing it. I'd stop for a month or two then turn it on while bored or unsure of what to play then spend the next 3 weeks chipping at it again. It's insane how much comfort I find in the play systems. It's like this beautiful painting that you loved when you bought and, sometimes when you're passing the wall it's hung on, you pause and stare. It's so perfect. I have a ton of memories with it. From bringing my laptop around to play a little versus with some friends in cafes, to making out with an ex while the game just sort of sat there waiting on an input, to spending transit times in airports with it, to watching hours of various streamers doing various things with it. More than a lot of indie games that I cherish, Spelunky has a sort of succinctness in design that makes it feel kind of like an artefact. The rules are very simple but the variations are complex. There's no point in talking about how its designed because it's right there in the doc, but the merger of classic game design and consistency in in-world behaviour and aesthetic makes it probably my favourite game of all time. I don't think I'll ever get sick of it.

@@GameArts1 That's honestly why I've started torrenting games that I'm unsure of in terms of my enjoyment with them. Sometimes it takes more than a couple of hours of gameplay to know how a game sits with you, and when you're strapped for cash like me, it's hard to make decisions based entirely off of other peoples experiences with games. I don't want to spend money on a game I'd ultimately want a refund for, and then not be able to get my money back because I wanted to give the game a fair chance. Spelunky 2 was one of the games I did pay for though. Not only does it offer more than plenty of value for its relatively low price point, but everything about the way the game feels just made me instantly want to delete that copy and go support the developers in the most direct way possible. And I did! It's honestly the pinnacle of platforming controls in my opinion, the controls are responsive, tight, and the game expands on your movement in a lot of ways that have a lot of depth. Along with that, while I've never experienced it, online play with this game looks to be quite enjoyable, and the humor of the game boosts exponentially when playing with other people, both new and experienced. While I won't do anything so rash as to encourage you to get into torrenting specifically for this game, maybe try and find someone who does have the game and ask them what makes the game stand out to them, or even ask them if you could try a couple of runs with them on steam remote play, I believe you can do that without needing a copy of the game yourself. Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are really both great examples of lighting in a bottle, with Spelunky 2 harvesting what made the first game special and forming an even stronger game with that foundation. It really is quite amazing what these games have accomplished, and I can't wait to see what he does next with his future titles.

Brilliant stuff. Cool to hear Derek talk about the game as though no decision was ever really intense or serious.

I absolutely love how much K&P features in this and props to you Danny for doing enough digging to mention "The Wall". Astrospoon was a really fun game, and I'm gutted Trigger Happy 2 was never finished.

I remember playing Spelunky for hours with my 2 brothers and 2 sisters. With my eldest brother being the best at spelunky, beating the game 100% completion withen a week . I kind of sucked and couldent get past the jungle world (400m-800m.) But it was still so fun trying to get better learning, the patterns of the game. It truly is a masterpeice and this was so dang cool to see of the game and I loved seeing this it was was a amazing documentary I thought barly any one but me has seen this game and it was a swell documentary. Amazing fricking game and im so thankful for him to create such an amazing game. Keep up the game designing im still watching the documentary btw. P.S. a game where you kill video game programmers was made a while ago by choice. I think it was a Nitrom game but it was so dang cool and reallyyy fun (Nitrom created really fun short games like bad ice cream 1, 2, 3, and 4.) But I forgot the name it was like kill all I think programmers, it starts with kill all though it was a good short game I really enjoyed oddly enoughed😂. I've also played castle crashers and other games like the impossible game on Xbox360 also phenominal work.

Exeptionally lovely; thank you, Noclip! :D And thanks to Derek & Co for being so rad! Hah, holy crap, I totally remember Trigger Happy! I dinked around with K&P (MMF later on) and hung around The Daily Click (www.create-games.com). Great creative outlet. The TIGSource forums are still bustling, by the way! Lots of devs post detailed logs of their work.

Great video. The only time I truly bought into a 'mystery' that turned out to be a myth was resurrecting Aeris in FFVII. I didn't have access to the Internet (primitive as it was at that point :P), but a friend of mine did, and he printed out a hundred or so pages of tips, secrets and rumours. We had no idea which were genuine and which were fake, but the most compelling had something to do with finding fish flakes to get back to where Aeris was killed and acquiring Holy materia, which would allow you to resurrect her. It was consistent with the lore of the game, and seemed eminently plausible, but after many hours of following this long chain of random stuff you were supposed to do... that fish just wouldn't go away.

First, excellent documentary! Thanks Noclip people! I've been meaning to watch this for a while and just got around to it now. But - WTF??? There's a Worm level in Spelunky??? I've played 10s of hours of the game, and watched and read so much more about the game. From all the stuff BananaSaurus Rex did, to all of the secret runs, to the Solo Eggplant run, to many speed runs, and on and on. Yet still I'd never heard of the Worm level. I can't believe I'm still learning more about this game.
