*vocaloid voice banks have only recently gotten AI features. each voice bank has a human voice provider behind it!

Just adding that vocaloid is *not* AI Its a vocal synthesizer that uses voice samples from paid and credited artists. (Unless the vocal provider wished to stay anonymous) The original vision for vocaloid was for artists to use it as backup vocals, harmonies, scratch tracks, etc. but they noticed that when they added character art to the box it sold significantly better. Credited voice providers are everyone from famous singers like Gackt, Yohio, and Yuri Masuda to successful voice actors like Asami Shimoda and Eri Kitamura! The program itself works like many other digital instruments. Users can control pitch, vibrato, intensity, etc. It is an artform in and of itself to use Vocaloid well. All voice banks or characters have unique challenges and skills as well making some more difficult to use than others. Vocaloid is a fascinating and respectful world of skilled producers, singers, artists, animators, etc. It has taken on a life of its own outside of its original intent and beyond what any one company could do alone. The fans and users have made vocaloid what it is today--and it is far from AI or anything of that sort.

One of the biggest problems in Japan' is its culture being so strict and harsh with things such as work and traditions. It puts so much stress on people that some can't handle it and would rather spend most of their lives in their homes with things that comfort them. It doesn't surprise me why this even leads to some people wanting to marry a fictional character. Most people do want love and affection from another person, but that seems almost impossible with Japan's culture, and being in a relationship with another person adds on that heavy stress it almost seems like it is not worth it and instead go for a fictional character that doesn't come with the stress that can come from a relationship with a real person.

Something that's specific to the Vocaloids that people outside the fandom don't usually understand is that they aren't really traditional characters in a sense, but more like blank slates that people project on - they don't generally have set personalities, relationships or characteristics (and even if they do, they're treated more like guidelines and it's accepted to go against them), and even their age can technically be adjusted based on how old you want them to be in a given work or headcanon. I don't know if this Kondo guy specifically imagines his version of Miku as a 16-year-old (if he does, that is pretty yikes morally), but I think it's worth pointing out that the freedom to mold the Vocaloid character into who you want them to be is an inherent part of these characters. There are a lot of inappropriate songs sung by Miku and other voicebanks that have their official age set as minors, but in the end they're just voicebanks so the fandom doesn't really get very hung up on the given ages. Miku being 16 is more of a general concept for marketing the character, rather than something that's set in stone and dictates every portrayal of Miku must be a 16 year old human girl, because 'Miku' as a cohesive character doesn't really exist. (I hope it sounds like it makes sense?) Edit: gotta add that I think this essential lack of a personality of her own is probably a big part of what makes Miku appealing to people like Akihiko. When you suffer from a crippling fear of and inability to trust other humans, what's more comforting than the idea of a "person" you can fully control down to deciding every aspect and detail of their personality? A full extension of yourself.

hikikomori is extreme social anxiety. It's what hitting US loudly. Depression. You can work, you can go to school, you can have your own place, you can still go hikikomori.

12:28 it's not AI. I get AI is trending nowadays, but there's a shitload of plugins that modularize sounds, I don't play horns in my music, they're called VST's, they're virtual libraries of sounds. The vocaloid plugin for hatzune miku is just that, a plugin, no AI involved.

I saw some people mention that Miku got him out of being a hikikomori, so maybe the character could have been a coping mechanism as he healed and I can't see anything wrong with that. The problem is probably that he consciously decided to pursue his fantasy and made steps to incorporate the character into his life, making full recovery impossible because he won't view the character the last 'hurdle' to get over in his recovery from trauma. Hopefully he does fully recover...

I feel like you would like a lot of vocaloid music. There’s a huge genre of those who produce vocaloid music with extremely happy melodies combined with the *darkest lyrics imaginable.* It seems right up your alley.

❗️❗️MEAT YOU GOT A BIG FACT WRONG, the vocaloid software uses voice banks of a real singer (usually credited and paid for!) that is then used to extrapolate sounds from there. It's not how gen-ai works and it's wayyyyyyy more ethical. The V4X miku is provided by the actress Saki Fujita, for example.

Hey man, I just wanna say this video surprised me in the best way. You were able to bring comedy to it, but unlike a lot of other youtubers I've seen, you weren't meanspirited about it. It was really nice to see someone actually be empathetic about something like this (except the, uh, 16 year old part). Seriously, I can't count the amount of videos I've seen about things like this that have just been so... Mean. Just making fun of them. Not actually considering why someone might end up that way. I genuinely hope Akihiko is able to get good therapy one day or at least make some HUMAN **ADULT** connections that can give him the social supports he needs to try to get better. BTW if you wanna read an absolutely fascinating story sorta about a Hikikomori learning to branch out, there's this really great Manga called "Inside Mari" or "I'm in Mari". It's sort of a psychological mystery Manga. The "in" here is not a sexual thing BTW. It's referring to his Self. He finds his consciousness waking up in a body that isn't his. I won't say any more cause I don't want to spoil, but I just love the story and at least one of the main characters is a Hikikomori, maybe more. It's a beautiful story that kept me guessing for a while!

people have such a need to bond that they will bond with inanimate objects if there is nothing else (or the perception of nothing else). but the fact that he used it to actually better himself and come out of being a NEET is a good thing I think. also I'm not sure miku actually has a confirmed age but idk and miku is not AI! she existed way before this AI trend stuff started. the big difference between mikus voice bank and generative AI garbage is consent and ethics. Vocaloids' voice banks are from real singers that were paid and signed contracts, whereas gen AI voices are fed to a machine with no compensation or consent from the original person.

Little correction! She’s much closer, at least up until recent years, to a synth keyboard. You type in the vowels and consonants of the lyrics, place notes or simply play the tune like you would on a keyboard. For a more culturally relevant comparison - remember Animal Crossing New Horizons and how you could make a town tune? It works like that, just with some tuning and fine detail inputs!

Honestly if I was a smart programmer I would instantly buy one of those hologram Miku things but then modify it. Change the look, language as well as information it knows and basically make my own tactical assistant like a halo ai. That sounds super cool and I have no idea why no one has thought to do that, basically make a desk top Cortana where you can ask game tips or general strategic information, like if you explain the combat scenario then it would give tactical advice, and if you link it to a game then it can give real time information as well. That sounds super awesome. Not to mention helpful for those who want to learn strategies like me, I love RTS games and it would be awesome to have some type of tactical AI to give advise and teach me strategies from history or books of war. All I would have to be is basically a encyclopedia where it will tell strategies through history when it fits to help teach me to look at stuff from different angles. Not to mention could be fun if your a halo fan, have an actual ai talk to you as you play, giving call outs like on your motion tracker or warning you of high class enemies like elite majors or hunters when they show up. Sadly I don't have the skill to do it but this would be a product I would buy in a heart beat. Side note can also be used for roleplay, a running joke me and my friends have is we have an on board ai for our flagship called Sam, and so it would be fun to have an actual ai be there to pretend it's an actual ai with us.

I pretty much grew up with vocaloid and UTAUloid, and I gotta say this is pretty sad. I almost forgot about Gatebox... Also, those vocaloid hologram concerts (because it isn't just Miku,) took place way before they did that with Mike. It's also worth mentioning that the vocaloids do have voice actors for the original ai sampling. Newer ones are made a bit different and the voices of old models change every few years to add new language options, but there was originally a single female VAer behind Miku's synth voice. Oh and the leeks are Miku's symbol.

not to weeb out, but to give credit where credit is due: Vocaloid voices DO have a voice provider, and the program uses pre-recorded sound bits, the song producers manually tune and pitch the voice, nothing is AI generated, I usually tell people using Vocaloid is like playing an instrument.
