I like nirvana but I think it’s sad that people don’t know David Bowie wrote this amazing song (before you reply i’m not saying that Kurt didn’t do a great job with this cover it’s an amazing cover all I’m say is it’s also lyrically a great song as well)
Even if it was Bowie's song originally Nirvana did it so well it became theirs. Bowie's got plenty of other amazing songs anyways, Kurt can have this one
How is it that this song from1970. 51 years ago still sound like it’s futuristic? I was 14 then. Now 65. It still sounds like something for 2040. And I love that. Plus it’s not the only Bowie song that give this feeling.
What can I say? We were lucky. Very, very lucky. Both of these artists were the definition of exceptional. Saw Bowie three times and Nirvana once. I was humbled each time.
It has to be his vocals as well as the guitar chords. His voice is so strange, yet amazing. How awesome that you heard this song when first released, bet it there was nothing like it. Even to this day there is nothing like it; except the covers.
David Bowie "I was simply blown away when I found out that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and i always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering 'Man Who Sold the World.' It was a good straightforward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been real nice to have worked with him, but just talking would have been real cool."
My mum loved David Bowie, she would definitely have been watching this back in 2000, so it brings me comfort to watch this. Fly high through the cosmos mum xx
Don't forget..kurt wrote on the wall GOD IS GAY when he teenager even in his song too and than he killed himself..that make God very..very..😡..kurt in hell right now..sorry for my comments
Yes, he was all of those things. He was born of a time when artists wrote their own songs, sang their own songs, played multiple instruments... That whole period in entertainment is gone.
I first heard Cobain singing this song and thought it was great. Then made sure I listened to the Bowie version and fell in love. Became my favorite song ever. RIP Bowie! You will always be my goblin king.
Bowie said that after Kurt sing this people came to him and said nice cover, and he laughed and said you know Kurt did a good job when people think the original is a cover.
When musician pay tribute it can be an amazing thing. Nirvana also did a great cover of the Velvet Undergrounds "Here she comes now" and then Bowie did a great cover of The Pixies "Cactus".
+wpollock1 same it's a shame i stopped listening to his music for so long and it took his death for me to venture back into his music another legend gone RIP
+RaptorRoll - Just wondering something. Have you lost a parent to death? Or a spouse? Or a close friend? If not, your question is understandable in the sense that you really don't have a way to comprehend why people react the way they do when an important person in their life passes. If so, did you just shrug your shoulders and say, "oh well, people die every day" and go on your merry way? Surely not. Bowie's death was a "shock" to many because 1) His illness was only known by a very small number of people...it was not public knowledge. 2) To many people, he was more than just a talented entertainer. He touched the hearts and minds of quite a few people and his music was a big part of their lives. So, even though they didn't know him personally, they felt the impact of his death personally.
+Nashville Vaper If people are in such shock as I am but I am not surprised he passed legend or not...he had a life of smoking, drug use in the early 70's which made people call him 'The Thin White Duke'...imagine cocaine making him thinner...so he must have had a lot of psychological/emotional problems. However, I read online a couple of years ago that he had Cancer and then after that little blurb was transmitted promptly forgot about it...however, I'm not surprised that Cancer got him in the end...A reason not to smoke cigarettes and do drugs...he could have lived longer but does it really matter...He's A Legend...I'm not...R.I.P.
@Рома Роман I don't think you understand how things work. It is impossible to disprove something that doesn't exist. The proof (plural of proof is proof, not proofs) has to come from the people who argue it does it exist. If I said there was a magical entity called a "ek", you couldn't disprove it's existence but you shouldn't believe me because i've provided no evidence of it's existence. The same goes for God, Heaven, Hell, Fairies, etc. There is no evidence of their existence so you have to be pretty gullible to believe in them.
Opino lo contrario, la atmósfera acorde a la canción es impuesta por los instrumentos de cuerda en el unplugged de Nirvana. Los aplausos en esta versión desmejoran la canción, creo.
Bowie was way before his own time. He had a Nirvana thing way before anyone ever heard of Nirvana. I appreciate Cobain for his tribute to the great David Bowie.
Just to clarify, both artists were amazingly original but Bowie (my favorite artist of all time) really did not have any style remotely resembling what Nirvana (my second favorite artists) did. They EACH had their own unique style which did not resemble the others whatsoever. As I said: Original. Kurts tribute was amazing. Just that though, a tribute.
He`s not dead, he`s on his way back to his planet, fools. Farewell Ziggy. I hope we didn`t annoy you too much down here. Thank you for the music and everything else.
I can't believe how many idiots are out there. Bowie wrote this song, Twiggy covered it in the late 70's and Kurt in the 90's. Many other artists too but those were the more popular versions. He also had cancer for 18 months prior to his depart not AIDS you sickos.
At least Cobain gave David Bowie credit at the end of the song on unplugged. David puts a ton more vocal energy in his original because he lived and wrote the lyrics. One of the coolest parts of the song is the bass running up a full octave.
I think the original was the best, nirvanas version live was second best and this version live was third best. Kurt nailed it live. But nobody can have a voice like Bowie.
We will forsake our countries. We will leave our motherlands behind us and become one with this earth. We have no nation. No philosophy. No ideology. We go where we're needed. Fighting not for country, not for government, but for ourselves. We need no reason to fight. We fight because we are needed. We will be the deterrent for those with no other recourse. We are soldiers without borders, our purpose defined by the era we live in. We will sometimes have to sell our selves and services. If the times demand it, we will be revolutionaries, criminals, terrorists, and yes, we may all be headed straight to hell. But what better place for us than this? It is our only home. Our heaven, and our hell. *This...is Outer Heaven.* -Big Boss
There's no such thing as "David/Kurt sang that better". They've both sang this song "differently". One really can objectively judge, one can only like or dislike. I love both versions, they posses different energy.
MrShabbyTiger Long long time ago, man invented wheel. Do we have to bash everyone after who made the wheel better or atleast as good as original or suitable for different purpose (equivalent to music taste). Go bash someone who made bad wheel.
El Shuwix Settle down, no one is getting bashed by me... Lennon and McCartney wrote many songs "Yesterday" is the most recorded song in history... but will the Beatles version ever be surpassed.. prob not... whereas the song TNK also by Lennon/McCartney I think is better performed by Brian Eno/Manzanera et al, of 801
I agree with you. cobain's version is just as good as the original because of how careful he was about covering other people's work--and his scratchy voice adds effect. all in all, obviously, kids that grew up in the '90s are gonna be more familiar with the nirvana version and like it better as where kids that grew up in the '70s will be more familiar with the original. this is a rare example of a cover version actually being as good as the original. think about "something in the air." thunderclap or tom petty? both also perfect. but I still like the heartbreakers version better. I'm out. merry Christmas.
We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when, although i wasn't there, he said i was his friend, which came as some surprise. i spoke into his eyes, "i thought you died alone a long long time ago." "oh no, not me, i never lost control you're face to face with the man who sold the world." i laughed and shook his hand and made my way back home, i searched for form and land, for years and years i roamed. i gazed a gazley stare at all the millions here: "we must have died alone, a long long time ago." "who knows? not me, we never lost control. you're face to face with the man who sold the world." "who knows? not me, we never lost control. you're face to face with the man who sold the world.
Hello There You are WRONG about all your 'corrections'- It is 'form and land" and it is 'gazed a gazely stare at all the millions here". Don't make corrections when you don't actually know.
I got an idea in my version : when i saw shoes repair man walking around the street, i always remember this song, the man who sol sepatu means the man who can fix or repair broken shoes
Like opening a diary, every song seems like an old friend. Evoking memories of people, places and feelings. So many feelings. Some forgotten until the music plays. What a wonderful thing for somebody to give me. Looking at all of the beautiful comments people are leaving and the huge, and very honest outpouring of sadness at his passing, I'm guessing i'm not alone in feeling somebody very special has gone.
kurt turned this song into an extremely emotional one specially with that guitar solo he plays on unplugged . that solo alone is heavier thn rest of the song combined .
live n loud is better, imo. for that song. so much more emotion, and they could really play to their comfortability in that setting. man that wail at the end with kurt is amazing. just an amazing song written and performed
It's like he's taking you to another place or time, that solo was amazing, I close my eyes whenever I hear that part in my playlist and man it can het me high and I hope it doesn't end.
I've never been so devastated from a celebrity death. It's a part of life that sucks and the survival rate for everyone is 0%. We're all gonna die. But damn, this sent me reeling. I'm still hurting from this. I genuinely loved David and his music. Also, the blonde chick playing the wooden fish thing is extremely hot.
I think its decent but I wouldn't say 10 out 10.. I mean Bowie is one of the greatest artists ever but he wrote the album when he was 22-23 and much like Hunky Dory its far far from being flawless and while the foundations of what would eventually become quintissentially Bowie are certainly there, its still quite unclear.
We lost a bright star the day you left, David. Your Ziggy tour was my first concert ever. Philadelphia. I remember it like yesterday. Miss you. Your music will always be in my heart and you are right there next to it. Peace to you, a gentle soul.
One of the greatest talents this world has ever known........"Look Up Here I'm In Heaven" David sang on his last album..........love you Mr. Bowie/Jones!!!!!!!!
First time I hear this version. All I knew until now was the great cover by Nirvana. But this is amazing, beautiful song, and it sounds huge here live... What a extraordinary artist David Bowie was.
Wowww he was gorgeous with tousled long blond hair! Come to think of it, he was always gorgeous. Iman was a lucky woman. I can't believe my beautiful genius has passed away.
I love David Bowies version the most and I do enjoy the Midge Ure version and the Nirvana one is alright nothing compared to Bowies or Ure's versions though
I am a nirvana fan. The amount of comparison between the original piece and nirvanas cover is never ending. Over at nirvana's cover of this song, the comments section is much more peaceful. Those who didn''t know that this is a david bowie's original accepted the fact as soon as they learnt. Even kurt cobain said that this was a david bowie song. Trolls will be trolls. Don't feed them by responding.
*I love the way he says "l gazed a gazing stare" amongst many other phrazes, he was'nt just a style icon of those years he stylized the way he spoke, everything about him was so unique, there was and ever will be only one Bavid Bowie.*
Sometimes the emotions you feel listening to songs like this have the habit of teasing memories that make you feel the weight of nostalgia in your heart.
Beautiful creation of David Bowie and Mick Ronson. 70’s forever! RIP David Bowie, RIP Mick Ronson, RIP Kurt Cobain sang beautifully and introduced to younger audience.
The problem is when David made this song, it wasn't famous. Then they heard the exactly same song played by Nirvana and became famous. (they didn't change a note) the problem is the public; as always
Приклоняюсь ,перед творчеством Дэвида ,ты лучший и весь мир скорбит даже сейчас ,мы любим тебя Дэвид ,Боуи всегда бьеться с нашими сердцами в унисон...!!!!
I was in HMV today with my son. I came across the Bowie album, "the man who sold the world." What's strange is, I just logged in to RU-vid, and what shows up. This track. I didn't look for it or even think about the album after leaving the HMV store. We are litrally being spyed upon everywhere we go.
