Brendan Darky Hughes is spoke off in the same category as Connolly, Pearse, Collins, Sands. legend of a man whos name and storys will be remembered forever.

dont agree with his agenda.....but Darkie was a man who stood for what he believed in. His final words are sad... take me back to the cell. sadly if he hadnt been on strike he may have lived to play a longer peace role and i am sure he would have embarrassed the challenge? whats your thoughts ? mike : )

I went to school in Tunbridge Wells in the late 1970's, I'm from Australia. I went into the Army recruiting office and passed the initial psych test thinking the Army would be a realistic job choice. Then I was told I would get a train ticket for a medical evaluation etc. Got home and realized that there was a possibility no matter how small of going to Ireland. Being an Aussie I reckoned it was none of my business being neither Irish or British. Condolences and all due respects to the families and friends on both sides who suffer.

I have vivid memories of visiting that shithole in the late 80s early 90s with my mammy visiting my dad. Seeing a gaunt looking man who i hadnt seen in the flesh from 1984 when i was 2. For my family the GFA allowed my dad to come home but for the struggle our republican cause it was selling our cause down the river. I havent been back home since i moved to scotland

No National Guard.
@arfnore
@arfnore 14 дней назад
@unusedsub3003 The NI govt, Stormont, did have an armed paramilitary force, the B specials. This was the equivalent of the US national guard. They were also exclusively made up of men from a protestant/loyalist background and had a reputation for human rights abuses against the Catholic minority. You have to remember that NI was set up to create a state dominated by protestants, had virtually no oversight or accountability, was gerrymandered to guarantee protestant supremacy and was opened/actively hostile to the Catholic minority (even though that Catholic minority made up over 1/3 of the population at that time!)

@@arfnore I came of age when they had been disbanded but my Mother cursed them every day, they left my father for dead yet he managed to walk 2 miles to a friends house. The B specials made more volunteers than they’ll ever know ☘️

Did Gerry and Martin ever do tough time?
@ATroubledLand
@ATroubledLand 17 дней назад
ATLmodK here, not sure that you can call Gerry’s internment experience easy time. Also, in any armed conflict, leaders are protected by their troops or followers. Can you imagine Montgomery or George VI being jailed during WW2? Or Eisenhower or FDR? The leaders are always the most secure.
@bensmith5413

@@ATroubledLand I just wondered because it seems that the late 70s was hellish for the prisoners. Never heard the top leadership talk about any experiences like that.
@ATroubledLand
@ATroubledLand 17 дней назад
ATLmodK here again, thanks so much for your comment and you are right that the seventies were hell for prisoners and others in northern Ireland. Gerry has referred to his beating in a couple of his speeches in the 2010’s and later, but he always pointed out that he was not the only one subject to this treatment.

What puzzles me the most about this calamity is how come two english speaking peoples have to show off like this? The possibilities are abundant and the bad a non entity. Its not a conflict of religious character. Its simple pride. 😢

It was never about religion. It was about national identity
@NiSiochainGanSaoirse
@NiSiochainGanSaoirse 17 дней назад
It's never BEEN a religious struggle. Ever. Some of the most famous Irish nationalists were protestant, like the iconic Wolfe Tone. Hes a republican icon, thoroughly celebrated throughout republican Ireland, yet he wad a devout protestant. The Irish fight has ALWAYS been a resistance against tyranny.

A waste of time and human life the whole conflict.British working class loyalist working class and catholic working class all want equality and a prosperous life I hope under the peace deal we can find ways of working together for equal prosperity that respects all our community alliances.Personally I don’t believe in colonial segregation or settlements unless it has the approval of the host government that’s just me no disrespect to the loyalist community that I see as a great people we cannot change history we only have now what we’ve got the reality.I would like to see peace continue in Northern Ireland investment and jobs a fight against poverty a better life for everyone’s children.
