All Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney name puns. WARNING: May contain spoilers from Ace Attorney games. The massive collection of name puns. Not all of them have name puns, though.
Which character name pun did you like the most? The Meaning Behind EVERY The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Name: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xdkHBXgGWvI.html
Inga was my favorite. You missed four name puns in Spirit of Justice Case One: Paht Rohl= Patrol Case Three: Tahrust inmee = Trust in Me Rheel Nehmu= Real Name Puhray zehlot= Prays a lot
I feel like Godot is a reference to the expression "Waiting for Godot" which means "waiting for something/someone that will never arrive", Godot was waiting for Mia after the coma and she never arrived
Another couple interesting things about Godot: - He references the play "Waiting for Godot" in several of his lines. A lot of the weird analogies or proverbs he says are paraphrases of lines from the play itself. - In the play, the character Godot never appears, and the two main characters sometimes question who he really is, or if Godot exists at all. It's fitting, since the character in the game is unknown to everyone, and since Godot is just a secret identity, he doesn't really exist.
my native language is german and "manfred" literally stems from "mann" (man) and "frieden" (peace). I think both interpretations if you can call them that are hilarious and clever since he's neither a peaceful man nor freed from karma.
One thing you missed with Phoenix Wright is also the Phoenix part, as every case is considered a turnabout, as in things get bad but then he turns them around, as though a phoenix rising from the ashes. Also, with the Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies stories, he falls from grace, but then rises again to become a lawyer once more.
I find it also fitting because of Dhurke, who's basically the Khura'inese version of Phoenix Wright, but a revolutionaire. They both were framed for forgery and fell from grace as a result, both adopted a Gramarye, both have a blue color scheme, strange eyebrows and have something to do with dragons: Wright's last name in Japanese is Ryuchi, "a dragon", and Dhurke is.. Dhurke. A dragon who never yields.
@@alarmlessRifleman by the way, Wright's last name in Japan is Naruhodo, because in Japan and in China last name comes first and first name comes AFTER it.
Pheonix can also be sorta said as He is and that being included with wright makes his name sound like He is right, though to be fair this might just be me grasping
@@yogawidhi1873 it's too long but his name litterally says "how could this name get more long and pompous than it already is" or something like that if you read the name outloud.
An another interesting fact I learned about Redd White: What did he do? Killed Mia Who suffers about it? Phoenix, Maya, and Godot/Diego What is Godot's weakness? Can't see red in white. Red in white. Redd White.
What is the name of Redd`s company? Bluecorp so we have Red in white, and blue separately but nearby If Godot can`t see Red in White, then he will see only the Blue nearby And who is the guy most related to the incident and also wears blue? Phoenix Thus, he could only see the Blue phoenix and blamed him for the crimes committed the Redd in White
One correction about Terry Fawles: His name is supposed to sound like "Teary Falls", not "There he falls". This can be confirmed by his Japanese name "Onamida Michiru", literally "Full of Tears"
In French, his name is Regis Florimet, a pun to the infamous prison of Fleury-Merogis. I suppose any other type of pun would have been hard to convey in French.
Technically, Larry’s last name could also just be literal (Butz = Butts), given the whole “when something smells” thing. Otherwise, this is all pretty accurate (or what I knew already was accurate, anyways.)
Gumshoes name is literally "Detective detective", dick mean detective and gumshoe means Detective, jf you say his occupation he is Detective Detective Detective
Some thing I’d like to point out is: the name “Fey” comes from a Middle English word that means “fairy”. Fairies often have supernatural powers so this is a nod to the Fey family’s Spirit Channeling abilities. What’s more, Aunt Morgan Fey is a reference to Morgan Le Fay: a evil witch in the King Arthur legend who uses control, power and manipulation to try to get what she wants. Additionally, Dahlia Hawthorne seems to represent a red Dahlia flower (due to her hair color). Red Dahlias symbolize betrayal and dishonesty (very fitting for her). Iris Hawthorne is, of course, named after the Iris flower which symbolizes hope, valor and trust (very fitting for her too)
Couple years late but I wanted to add hawthorn symbolism in, it’s said that bringing hawthorn blossoms inside would bring death soon after. Cutting down hawthorn trees (or just damaging them) would also bring bad luck. It’s also great you brought up Fey = Fairy because hawthorn trees are the trees fairies (and spirits) tend to and protect.
Godot's name is also a referencing to play about two men waiting to meet a man who never arrives (whose name is shockingly Godot). Luke Atmey and Godot actually reference this when Luke says "some people spend their entire lives idly waiting for his appearance" and Godot says "there wasn't anyone waiting for me when I woke up". There's no real definition for who the man is supposed to represent but one interpretation is that Godot represents who you once were and can never be again.
@@yumeyumedi the closest you can get with him is that his name could reference grass cutter the ancient sword of Japan, but other than that his name just means a worthy blade or a worthy edge, so he doesn’t fit unless you want to stretch it to mean grass cutter specifically
The reference of names in the great attorney is further than that though Ryunosuke is more of a reference to Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, a Japanese writer of the time. Further , it draws connection to the the Japanese name for Phoenix Wright which is Ryuichi. Even the name susato used in great attorney 2 is Ryutaro
I always thought that Turner Grey meant something more like 'Turn Her Grey', alluding to the malpractice incident and how skin greys after death. It could have meant he was always a bad doctor and ended up with more dead patients than living ones. Although this would make more sense if he were a mortician rather than a clinic doctor, so who knows eh?
This is a good list but you missed quite a few: Cindy stone = reference to "cinder blocks" April May = May comes after April Marvin Grossberg = Marvel at the gross iceberg Jack Hammer = pretty self explanatory Sal Manella = the disease salmonella Robert Hammond = Hammond means "high protector" coming from Dutch, ironic Misty Fey = mysterious Fey Gregory Edgeworth = Gregory means "watchful vigilant" Yanni Yogi = a yogi lives a simple and peaceful life Ema/Lana Skye = Ema means universal and Lana means light, so universe sky and light sky, referencing their personalities possibly Bruce Goodman = a good man Joe Darke = dark because he's a serial killer Dustin Prince = dusting prints Franziska von Karma = from the Germanic tribe of the Franks, could reference her time spent in Germany Ami Fey = Ami means beloved Director Hotti (fake) = the Hotti clinic in itself is a reference to this guy's perverted nature Juan Corrida = Corrida means "bullfighting" as a reference to his lifelong stubborn fight with Matt Engarde Celeste Inpax = she "impacts" people's lives Doug Swallow = he swallowed the cold killer x medicine Ron Delite = Ron means "joy" and then delite to delight Desiree Delite = Desiree means "much desired" so much desired delight Kane Bullard = Bullard can be translated to bully, having to do with the blackmail Glen Elg = his name's a palindrome like Lisa Basil Victor Kudo = victor could reference his family's battle history and them being victorious, and then kudo being kudos Bruto Cadaverini = Brutal and cadaver Melissa Foster = Foster referencing how she became a foster kid after jumping into the river Elise Deauxnim = Deauxnim could be a play on pseudonym, or deaux means two and nym is a variant of onym which means "name" in Greek, so two-name Kristoph Gavin = Kristoph means "bearing Christ" which is ironic because he has the devil on his hand Dr. Hickfield = a hick from a field Plum Kitaki = she's shaped like a plum Wesley Stickler = a measley stickler Romein LeTouse = Romaine lettuce Machi Tobaye = "much to buy" Daryan Crescend = daring crescendo Drew Misham = drew a sham Spark Brushel = spark of inspiration, brush Magnifi Gramarye = magnificent gramarye Florence L'Belle = fluorescent beauty Rex Kyubi = Rex means king, referencing his alderman title Constance Court = a court figure with a conscience Robin Newman = the last name is reference to them becoming a "new man" Clay Terran = clay terrain Solomon Starbuck = star referencing space, buck meaning adventurous young man Ora and Jack Shipley = the last name literally references a ship Azura Summers = "too cool off a summer cold" Paht Rohl = patrol Tahrust Inmee = trust in me Puhray Zeh'lot = Prays a lot Taifu Toneido = Typhoon Tornado Bucky Whet = whet soba reference, or buckwheat Archie Buff = archaeology buff Armie Buff = army buff Queen Ga'ran = Grand Queen Nayna = nana Amara Sigatar Khura'in = Amara means bitter, showing how she's bitter at Dhurke Sorin Sprocket = soaring gear
@@nachocheese2823 actually his wiki mentions that his name could be read as Man Freed Von Karma and there is a good explanation behind since he was freed of his bad karma after Phoenix proved his guilt plus as mentioned the bullet was karma since it was lead him to commit murder and eventually not removing it was his downfall
Extra Fun Fact about Apollo and Athena: According to the Greek tragedy the Oresteia, Athena was the first judge, and Apollo was the first defense. The first prosecution were the Three Furies, although there really isn't any references to that in Ace Attorney unless you count a prosecutor being called a "demon prosecutor".
When three more prosecution attorneys come along named Tisiphone, Alecto, and Megaera, and the next three Ace Attorney games after Athena’s story is finished focus on those prosecution attorneys as a team
Yuri Cosmos is also reference to Yuri Gagarin, first man in space. Really, for all the name changes, Ace Attorney makes it work cause they are well thought out!
ME: " This'll be a cute video to look, but I don't expect to see anything I don't know." VIDEO: "Mia Fey = Missing In Action" ME: [Amazed K'Nuckles face]
I think it's cause her name is Mia, or M.I.A, which is the abbreviation for "missing in action." Mia was killed, so she was "missing in action." I personally think it's a weak connection, but I think that's what the video ment.
I think you missed a lot with certain characters. Right off the bat, a Phoenix is a creature that is supposed to “rise from the ashes”, as he does in court. There’s plenty more but, at that point I’d just make my own video.
You missed a few Diego's initials are D.A as in Defense Attorney Given the whole magical/spiritual thing with the fey family, fey likely means fae Morgan Fey is likely a reference to Morgan le Fey Apollo Justice's first name is also a reference to the Apollo rockets Metis Cykes refers to the mythological figure Metis Desiree Delite as in Desire Delight Celeste Inpax as in Celestial impact Victor Kudos as in Victory, Kudos Glen Elg is a Palindrome Drew Misham as in Drew My Sham
In most of the names with multiple puns or meanings, you seem to have only used one of them. Miles for instance means soldier in Latin, and Edgeworth is also a reference to the prosecutor’s sword and shield. Edgy, his nickname, references his moody disposition.
I thought his name was a pun on the phrase "couldn't get a word in edgewise", especially because of the way he bulldozed his way through court hearings to do anything to get a guilty verdict in the earlier cases
Another thing that I did not realize myself, other people on the internet did: Redd White's name is also a pun in that he was the one who killed Mia Fey, and there's a certain character who is both unable to see red with a white background who also isn't able to "see" who Mia's true killer was
WARNING, CONTAINS SPOILERS: I've found a different take on Von Karma's name that probably makes more sense (courtesy of Ace Attorney Wiki). Apparently Manfred is a German name that means "man of peace" and karma is taken from the Japanese version of his surname "Karuma", (狩魔) the Japanese romanization for "karma". In kanji terms, "karu ma" (狩 魔) means "a demon who hunts". So yes, a peaceful man, taken in sarcasm (obviously due to his ruthless and corrupt prosecuting career and his hatred for Miles and his dad). As well as a demon who hunts for nothing but a guilty verdict to keep his name and legacy spotless, and is willing to do anything to keep such things.
0:26 I always thought that was his name because those are the colors that make up his outfit. Red + white = pink Red + blue = purple And also he has a blue and red tie.
After playing trials tribulations I put together a story Godot can't see red on a white background so he can see Redd White therefore he blamed the next person in sight Pheonix Wright because Maya was proven innocent
Actually, Manfred von Karma was a reference to Manfred von Richthofen, AKA The Red Baron, because both men had winning streaks ended by a single bullet
Here are all the names for the Investigations games that I could find the puns for (SPOILERS FOR BOTH INVESTIGATIONS GAMES): AAI1: Jacques Portsman = Jock Sportsman Buddy Faith = Faithful buddy (His nickname "Jim" might come from "Gym") Rhoda Teneiro... I dont know but the AA wiki has a few guesses (Might be "Road to nowhere", "the narrow road", who knows) Akbey Hicks = Hickup Zinc Lablanc: Zinc oxide is often used as a white (blanc is white in french) pigment Cammy Meele = Chamomile Kay Faraday = Okay for a day Shi-Long Lang = Literally just the Chinese mandarin reading of his japanese name (every Zheng Fa character is like this, so I wont mention any more unless necessary) Ernest Amano = Ernest man Lance Amano = "Lost man"? Maybe? The wiki says so but...? Lauren Paups = Lollipops Oliver Deacon/Colin Devorae = Both names are anagrams of each other Mack Rell = Mackerel Byrne Faraday = Burn for a day? Deid Mann = iconic (not but seriously, "Dead Man", iconic) Manny Coachen = Coaching Cece Yew = See you Calisto Yew = Callous to you Tyrell Badd = The real bad Ka-Shi Nou = Casino Quercus Alba = Scientific name for White Oak Colias Palaeno = Scientific name for a species of butterfly AAI2 (fan translation): Nicole Swift = Swift means "to act quickly or promptly", much like her Ethan Rooke = Rook Horace Knightley = Horse and Knight Raymond Shields = He is a defense attorney, "shields" defend people Sebastian Debeste = "The best" Justine Courtney = Justice and Court Jay Elbird = Jail bird Simon Keyes = Shy monkeys Patricia Roland = first 3 letters of each name form "Pat Rol", patrol Sirhan Dogen = Dogen comes from the name of a japanese zen Buddhist teacher AND from "dog" Jeffrey Master = his nickname "Master Jeff" is a pun on Master Chef Katherine Hall = Catering Hall Delicia Scones = Delicious Scones Dane Gustavia = Gustatory Isaac Dover = Iced Over Karin Jenson = Care Injection Bonnie Young = She is not young (also her hospital is called "Dye-Young" (die young)) Blaise Debeste = "The best" again but also "blaze" from his lighter John Marsh = Reference to Red Dead Redemption's John Marston, since he he is a cowboy, and Marsh is a "cow boy" Jill Crane and Jack Cameron = Cameron's last name is "Camera" and they both form a reference to Jack and Jill Moozilla = Godzilla but a cow And finally, ultra spoilers for the mastermind of the entire game, I am warning you: Simon Keyes is a play on "shy monkeys" yes, but also a reference to Simon Says due to his manipulations of others, and he is the "key" to nearly everything in the game
"Byrne" is not "burn", it's "bird". He and his daughter have raven motifs. Also a hint about him being the Yatagarasu, since it is a three-leged raven, as I recall.
It’s a very subtle way to say “he died” as well by making him, an aspiring astronaut who associates with people with celestial names, a person with a literal earthly name.
I have two more to elaborate on: Klavier and Dahlia. SPOILERS: Klavier does means "piano", yes, but instead of being a commentary gag on his rock lifestyle and career, it's actually a joke hidden in one of Apollo's themes (can't remember which one but I'm sure with enough effort it can be found). In one of Apollo's themes, you can faintly hear a PIANO playing a slowed version of "Guilty Love" (Klavier's theme) on the track. So, Klavier, the piano, is playing a piano version of his theme on Apollo's song. I'd like to think it's present due to the connection of both Apollo and Klavier's stories and their differing personalities. Dahlia Hawthorne is much, much more complex, but after dissecting the meaning of her name, it all makes sense now. A dahlia is a beautiful, usually pink flower, hence why she wears pink, and flowers represent delicacy, fragileness, and beauty most times as a symbol (that part seems obvious, I know), but her last name is really the kicker. The Hawthorne effect in psychology is basically the fact that people will change their behavior simply because they're being watched. Dahlia modified and hid her true self because she knew that she was being watched or observed for any behavior that could provide evidence that she committed both murder and attempted murder. She took on the demeanor of an innocent, sweet, lovely young lady that could do no harm, and she relied on her outward appearance to do so. So, all in all, she is a beautiful illusion that hid her true self, or a fragile illusion, because once she was discovered for who she truly was, it wasn't hard to see her breakdown after that.
Shelly de Killer always makes me smile because I can imagine the localizer thinking what the fuck they were going to do when it had to be shell related.
Florrent L'Belle is french pun. When you translate his last name into english you get "the beautiful". His 1st name, when translated into english, is "flourish". So yeah his real name is "Flourish The Beautyful".
Just adding to these, considering there were a couple you missed: The Fey Clan: "Fey" refers to the gods and spirits of Celtic mythology, and the Fey Clan are spirit mediums. April May: April & May are the 4th & 5th months of the year. Sal Manela: Salmonella Acro: Real name *Ken Dingling*, based on "dangling". Matt Engarde: "Matt", short for "Matthew" means "gift of god" Juan Corrida: "Corrida" is a Spanish word for bullfighting, meant to contrast with Matt's French surname from a fencing term. Bruto Cadaverini: Comes from the word "brute". Apollo Justice: Apollo according to Greek myth is believed to be the first defense attorney ever (look it up), and "Justice" is self-explanatory. Hugh O'Conner: He faked his way into school, and his surname contains "con", meaning to lie and manipulate. Robin Newman: "New Man", referring to her pretending to be a man. Yuri Cosmos: Named after the Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. Aura Blackquill: Aura was one of the Greek goddesses of the wind and the clear sky. Roger Retinz: The retina is a part of the eye, and he was the original Mr. Reus & a member of Troupe Gramayre. Datz Are'Bal: His alias is "A'nohn Ihmus", a pun on "anonymous" Tahrust Inmee: "Trust in Me". Bucky Whet: "Buckwheat", the main ingredient in Soba Noodles. Paul Atishon-Wimperson: "Wimp person" Amara Sigatar Khura'in: "Sigatar" is Sanskrit for "immortal", as she fakes her death & survives an assassination attempt via gunshot. Sorin Sprocket: "Soaring", and a "sprocket" is a part of a machine often used in the early industrial revolution.
Just wanted to throw my two sense in. Mia Fey - I think MIA is kind of a stretch (Forgot Maya Fey, but I don't think there's any pun) Miles Edgeworth - I always interpreted the Edge in Edgeworth to be in reference to how standoffish he can be Dick Gumshoe - Dick has also been used as slang for detectives Larry Butz - I never thought Butz was meant to reference Klutz. I always thought it was just meant to sound silly. (You forgot Cindy Stone) Frank Sahwit - It could also be interpreted that Frank is not just his name, but also a reference as "to be frank" (You forgot April May. It's not mentioned in game, but she was born in a winter month despite her name) Redd White - Also, Red and White make pink, and Red and blue make purple, which are his two most prominent colors (You forgot Marvin Grossberg, who is generally kind of gross) (Forgot Misty Fey, but I don't think there's any pun) (You forgot Jack Hammer) (You forgot Sal Manella) (Forgot Yanni Yogi, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Robert Hammond, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Missile the police dog, named after Shu Takumi's late Pomeranian of the same name) (Forgot Polly, while initially her name seems like a generic name for a parrot, she's actually named after someone) (Forgot Ema Skye, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Lana Skye, but I don't think there's any pun) Damon Gant - I believe Gant is also German for glove, and his gloves are one of his most defining character traits Neil and Jake Marshall - I think Neil being real and Jake being fake is a bit of a stretch (Forgot Bruce Goodman, who was a good man) (Forgot Joe Darke) (Forgot Dustin Prince, which sounds like "dusting prints") (Forgot Franziska von Karma, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Pearl Fey, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Morgan Fey, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Mimi Miney) (Forgot Dr. Hotti, who ogles women) (Forgot Ami Fey, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Russel Berry, Berry sounding like Very in Berry Big Circus) Acro and Bat - Their real names are Ken and Sean Dingling, likely a combination of Ringling and "dangling", a reference to their job as acrobats (Forgot Juan Corrida, but I don't think theres any pun) Shelly DeKiller - DeKiller meaning "The Killer" (Forgot Celeste Inpax, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Doug Swallow, Doug sounding like drug) (Forgot Ron DeLite, but I don't think there's any pun other than "delight") (Forgot Desirée DeLite, but I don't think there's any pun other than "delight") (Forgot Kane Bullard, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Adam Mada which is also a Palindrome) (Forgot Glen Elg which is also a Palindrome) (Forgot Victor Kudo, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Bruto Cadaverini, Bruto sounding like Brute or brutal) (Forgot Valerie Hawthorne, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Iris, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Elise Deauxnim, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Bikini, but I don't think there's any pun) Trucy Wright - I just don't get this one (Forgot Kristoph Gavin, but I don't think there's any pun) Klavier Gavin - Probably should have mentioned Gewinner in reference to The Gavinners Wocky Kitaki - I genuinely think that one might just be a coincidence. He has nothing to do with walkie talkies Alita Tiala - don't get what Alita Tiala is an anagram for (Forgot Plum Kitaki, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Winfred "Big Wins" Kitaki, but I don't think there's any pun other than "win" being in Winfred) (Forgot Wesley Stickler, "stickler for the details") (Forgot Romein LeTouse, literally romaine lettuce) (Forgot Lamiroir, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Machi Tobaye, but I don't think there's any pun. Some speculate it comes from the phrase "much to buy" but that's a stretch) (Forgot Daryan Crescend, Crescend probably comes from the musical term "crescendo.") (Forgot Drew Misham, Drew being the past tense of Draw) (Forgot Spark Brushel, Brushel likely being a reference to the toothbrush he carries) (Forgot Magnifi Gramarye, Magnifi may come both from the words "magnificent" or possibly also "magnify," a reference to the Perceive System) (Forgot Damian Tenma, Damian sounds like Demon) (Forgot Rex Kyubi, Rex meaning King) (Forgot Florent L'Belle, but I don't think there's any pun) Aristotle Means - Aristotle is a Greek philosopher, and Professor means looks like a marble statue (Forgot Constance Courte, literally court) Robin Newman - Last name also references being "a new man" (Forgot Solomon Starbuck, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Clay Terran, Clay, like the material, Terran means "of earth.") Yuri Cosmos - Named after Yuri Gagarin, who was the first man in space (Forgot Metis Cykes, Metis being the mother of Athena in Greek mythology) (Forgot Jack Shipley, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot Azura Summers, Azura comes from azure, meaning blue) (Forgot Rayfa Padma Khura'in, Padma means ‘lotus’ in Sanskrit) (Forgot Nahyuta Sahdmadhi, Nahyuta comes from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘myriad’. Sadmadi comes from the Japanese saying: hotoke no kao mo sando made ('even the Buddha will get angry if you brush his face thrice'). Also from the Sanskrit Samadhi, which refers to a state of meditative consciousness) (Forgot Shah'do, sounds like Shadow) (Forgot Paht Rohl, sounds like Patrol) Roger Retinz - If you swap his first and last name, it sounds like his nickname, the ratings rajah Mr. Reus - Can also be read as a Reus, as in an act, or Latin for guilty (Forgot Tahrust Inmee, sounds like Trust in me) (Forgot A'nohn Ihmus, sounds like anonymous) (Forgot Puhray Zeh'lot, "Prays a lot". Also from "zealot") (Forgot Bucky Whet, from "buckwheat", a kind of noodle dough.) (Forgot Taifu Toneido, Typhoon Tornado) (Forgot Dhurke Sahdmadhi, sounds like "Dark Somebody" but might just be a coincidence) (Forgot Armie Buff - Army Buff) (Forgot Archie Buff, archaeology buff) (Forgot Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in, "Ga'ran" is a Buddhist temple. "Sigatar" may come from "shi kataru", "death speaks".) (Forgot Nayna, likely a reference to Nana) (Forgot Amara Sigatar Khura'in, "Amara" is a Buddhist term. "Sigatar" may come from "shi kataru", "death speaks".) (Forgot Sorin Sprocket, soaring) (Forgot Selena Sprocket, but I don't think there's any pun) (Forgot every character from Ace Attorney Investigations 1 and 2, and The Great Ace Attorney 1 and 2. Not exactly "EVERY Ace Attorney Name Pun")
Some things to add: Yuri Cosmos gets his name from Yuri Gagarin, a cosmonaut. Morgan Fey is a reference to Morgan Le Fay, and Fata Morgana Godot is a reference to "Waiting for Godot" Trucy could also be "Truth-y", fitting with right and justice. Lamiroir -> La Miroir -> The Mirror
A lot of commenters have pointed out that there are even more than these. For a few I've thought of, which I haven't seen in the comments yet: - The definitions of "fey" include "giving an impression of otherworldliness or mystery," "having supernatural powers or clairvoyance," or (less commonly) "fated to die." The first two definitions apply to the entire Fey family, and the last one also applies to Mia Fey. - Mia and Maya both have names that sound like "my." Their names could both be a pun on "my fey," or in other words, "my clairvoyant." - "Misty" could be a pun on "mystery," "mystique," "mystic," "mystical," or "missing," all of which apply to Misty Fey; she has mystical powers and officially goes by the title of Mystic, and it is a mystery why she went missing. - Pearl Fey visibly resembles a pearl, from the shape of her eyes and head, and the colour of robes she wears. Also, a pearl is hidden inside of the oyster that makes it, and is unseen by the outside world until the oyster is removed. Pearl Fey is kept hidden from the world outside of her village, until her mother is taken away from her. - "Edgeworth" could also be referencing that that Miles' worth is at the "edge," i.e., the top; "Edgeworth" could mean he is the best in his field. It's also possible that "Miles" refers to him being "miles ahead" of everyone else. - Turner Grey could also mean "turn her grey," since he was known for driving Nurse Miney too hard, figuratively causing her to turn grey, and later leading to the death of her sister, who literally turned grey. Alternatively, Turner Grey's name could reference the fact that he becomes a murder victim. Several of the victims have names that reference death. So, besides his hair turning grey, his skin would turn an ashen grey colour after he dies. - Roland Berry's last name leads to his circus being called the "Berry Big Circus," a pun for "very big circus;" it could also refer to him being a murder victim, whom everyone needs to "bury." (
Apparently Wocky name is Japanese is North (Since it's Kitaki Takita, his name is "North north north") Alita name in Japanese is South (Since it's Namina Minami, her name is "South south south") They really were made for each oh-wait
i always thought that von karma (more specifically manfred although it could work for franzisca) was referencing karma, since manfred not having the bullet removed from his shoulder was eventually his downfall. for franzisca it could work for karma because she was so arrogant and over-confident, it was karma for her being so sure of herself
Karma isn’t when bad things happen to you because you have a bullet in your shoulder. Karma is when bad things happen to you because you did bad things. He saw karmic justice for the murders, cheating, lying, and all the other unsavoury behaviour that arose from his arrogance. Not justice for having a bullet in his shoulder.
I think Edgeworth's english name comes from what his Japanese name translates to. "Mitsurugi", from my understanding, is basically saying "Beautiful blade" (since I think a tsurugi is a type of sword). Therefore, "Beautiful blade" becomes "Edgeworth". A sharp edge worthy of admiration. Shelly De Killer, in my opinion, is "killer with a conscience" ...Or in the case of his calling card, "killer with a CONCHscience" His symbol is a conch shell, after all! And as for Godot, I think in addition to the DieGO ArmanDO bit, there's a play called "Waiting for Godot" by the playwright Samuel Beckett, where the entire premise is about these two gentleman waiting their whole life for a man named Godot, who never comes. Luke Atmey even makes a reference to that specific premise! Anyways, now that that's out of the way, here's some puns for The Great Ace Attorney that I've realized so far! (This doesn't include DGS2 since I've only gotten partway to case 5 of DGS1) Taketsuchi Auchi - "Ouchie", basically what you say when you wince in pain. Jezaille Brett - I'm guessing it's either "Brit" or "Brat" that's supposed to be her pun? Unsure! Iyesa Nosa - "Yes sir" and "No sir" Kyurio Kurekuta - "Curio Collector" Bif Strogenav - "Beef Stroganoff" Herlock Sholmes - Everyone knows this by now, but it's the name of Maurice LeBlanc's 100% original character from the Asene Lupin novels (who is DEFINITELY NOT SHERLOCK HOLMES), and also LeBlanc's method of giving a big middle finger to Arthur Conan Doyle. Mael Stronghart: "Maelstrom", aka a great whirlpool/vortex, which makes sense considering how his Japanese Name translates to "Hart Vortex" Magnus McGilded - "Gilded", like covered in a layer of gold...because Magnus is rich. Lay D. Furst - That one doesn't even need an explanation xD Sound it out and it's obvious Natsume Soseki - Not actually a pun, just the name of a real Japanese author! Pat & Roly Beate - Their names make up the word "Patrol"! Eggert Benedict: It's...It's just "eggs benedict"....
Gumshoe's first name is also part of the detective pun. Back in the prohibition era, it was a slang term for Detective. So his name (with title) is basically Detective Detective Detective. (Referring to a private detective as a "Private D-" was more common, but the slang term did exist separately as well.) It's believed that this may have derived from the Romani "dik", meaning "to look". Larry Butz also has more pun in his name... They make it very obvious several times with his catchphrase. "If something stinks, it's usually the Butz." He also accidentally gets called "Hairy" instead of "Larry" at one point. It's more childish humor than a lot of the others, but he's a more immature character. Benjamin Woodman's last name is also a ventriloquism related pun, since Trilo (his puppet) is a small wooden man.
Ron Delight is a reference to the drink "Sunny delight" which is also known as Sunny D, the brooch that mask demaske is wearing has a sun on it, and speaking of mask, mask the mask, meaning to put a mask on over an existing mask, and spoiler, Luke was giving orders to mask meaning that Luke put a mask over the mask he was already wearing, Ron was Luke's mask, and Demaske was Ron's mask
I get two references out of Datz. First, as listed, and most readily apparent: That's a Rebel. The second only makes sense in the final case of the game regarding the Founder's Orb: That's Our Ball.
Something odd happened with Filch. Never before have I heard of “filch” meaning “steal,” but when I read the name, that’s exactly where my mind went. Yet now that connection isn’t there anymore. Really weird
Omg thank you soo much for making this! Lol there were some names in the Spirit of Justice game that were so confusing, I didn't understand the name puns for a few of the characters.
I think that Viola’s (or Violetta) name has meaning too: it means violet and the flower symbolizes shyness and modesty, but also death and disgrace. Maybe it is just a coincidence though, flowers has lots of meanings
I do like the Phoenix part because it's such an amazing way they localized his name. "Naruhoudou" (成歩堂)means "I understand!" or some phrase related to that. "Ryuichi" (隆一 roughly means "First son of the dragon" or something similar to that. I would assume it can also mean "First dragon". So.. "Phoenix Wright!" Wright = Right A phoenix is some sort of mythical beast that can have relation to fire, but it does also tie into other things that Phoenix does (as another popular comment stated)
Furio Tigre tried to impersonate Phoenix. Both the Tiger and the Phoenix are celestial beings in Chinese folklore. Same for the dragon, which appears in the Japanese name of the protagonist.
I want to give an honorable mention to the anime-original case Turnabout Express, which has some pretty clever pun names (spoliers for anyone who hasn't seen it) Avery Richman = A very rich man Tristen Turnbull = "Twist and Turn" (the case starts out with Phoenix trying to defend Richman who was found guilty of murder in the US, but then theres the plot twist that one of the witnesses gets murdered halfway through, and suddenly they also have to find out who did it. Theres also the twist that Tristen Turnbull, the prosecutor, was both the killer and the one who helped frame Richman for murder, thus "Twist and Turn") Rick Steam = steam engine. "Rick" is also a refernce to a charcter in another Shu Takumi game, Dino Crisis, who he resembles Reginia Locomoti = locomotive. "Regina" is also a reference to a character in Dino Crisis who she also resembles Benjamin Cashinova = "Benjamin" as in the $100 dollar bill, "Cashinova" as in he loves money (he's the secretary general of the All-American Trade Federation) Gale Gaelic = another Dino Crisis reference
