There is value in having a commentator that is as clueless as most viewers as long is it is balanced by a well informed commentator. It adds excitement and is good for new viewers

I think clueless is a bit too strong but I agree with the overall point that you need to be connecting with the average fan!

@@Radarssbm It would be interesting to have a casual player sit down with a competitive player to watch a set; every time the casual doesn’t understand the commentators’ terminology they will pause the vod so the competitive player can explain. Having in depth terminology is good/necessary, but it’s also good to put in perspective how left out a new viewer may be.

I know he's retiring to work for Lud now, but I'd love to see Aiden on the commentary couch more!

the sad thing about walts recaps is that I actually do LOVE them and I always watch and like them. wish they would get more popular because its such good content!

Really enjoyed the commentary section. I agree so hard that people could benefit a ton from studying players and preparing for the narratives they want to share in advance. It's by far the biggest thing I've emphasized for myself in my own commentary journey and I believe it's helped me a lot. We all have a lot of room to grow, and it's been awesome to see so many new people who follow closely (like the two of you) getting into it over the past year as well!

It would be an interesting experiment to have someone who's picking up the game to only get their information from smashboards and see how their playstyle differs from the current meta

no lie i would watch scl if it was every single week. would be cool if it could somehow be converted into a circuit. although a circuit like that probably wont be viable with offline tournies coming back soon.

I'm really curious who Aiden thinks the star Ultimate casters are that put them above Melee, because I honestly find most Ultimate commentary (outside of TK / Coney) to be pretty insufferable. I haven't watched Ultimate in a long time though.

He mentions TK/EE/Coney specifically in the episode, so I think that’s who he is referring to

I think you really really underscored Path to Pro for players. By comparing it to starcraft it will always look bad but when you compare melee to the field of esports it's always easier to look at specific improvements you want to make to your tech or neutral game for literally every session you play. If you look at CSGO at some point your training just turns into grinding aimlabs for hours. With Unranked and unclepunch available and ranked around the corner there are so many ways to get good. Just look at people like zain, moky, s2j, none, and cody. They all seriously leveled up in 2020 because they were almost always able to find high level practice and they played against top players 5-7 days a week. If you are an up-and-coming CSGO pro if you want serious practice you need your whole team with you whereas in melee you can just hit unranked, use discord, twitter, or twitch to find high level practice whenever you want it. It seems like a huge oversight to say that this era gets a 2 for path to pro when in this era we have seen more players drastically improve than any other era before. More people in 2020 and 2021 have taken the path to pro during 2020 than in any other time before. Having competition viable netcode in a fighting game is so much more important to high-level players who want to get better compared to any team game where the teams are more than 2 people just because of logistics. If you compare us to other esports we have to be better than most.
@ZRoflcopter
@ZRoflcopter 3 года назад
Getting good is not exactly the same as going pro though. I agree, the netplay era has carved out more practical methods of getting better quickly, but all of the players you mentioned were already top 20 going into the year.
@lucasmcnamee3658
@lucasmcnamee3658 3 года назад
@@ZRoflcopter ok but what about people like gutz, Ben, Albert, polish, lucky. I think it's pretty clear that rn players at any level have an easier time getting better than in most other esports games. We can't penalize melee just because the game itself is hard.
@ZRoflcopter
@ZRoflcopter 3 года назад
@@lucasmcnamee3658 all of them have been top players for years too? I'm not penalizing it, I just don't see the Slippi era pushing Johnny No-Name into the top 20/50 if they're not already established over multiple years prior.
