Today, there are more people in the world who play the online multiplayer battle game League of Legends than there are people who live in France. We wanted to see how humanity got to this point, so VICE host Matt Shea flew to South Korea, a country where competitive gaming-also known as eSports-can either make you rich and famous or land you in rehab.
In the final part of eSports, we join 40,000 screaming fans at the League of Legends world final-the highest-attended eSports match in history. As we watch the future stars of the competitive gaming world ascend to glory, we're left wondering how physical sports will ever catch up.

Jesus Christ, enough with this condescending tone already. "It's a computer game we're her to watch. A computer game." So fucking what? I can say "We're here to watch a bunch of guys kick a ball around." Doesn't make it any less important for the people that enjoy it. eSports are bigger than any athletic sport, so when are you going to abandon this stupid stigma that "it's just a game"? Football is also just a game. And Basketball. And Tennis. And so on. Why do you have the need to single something out and call it weird? We all like different things. I accept yours. Why cant you accept mine?

Ryu Son Oh, for fuck sakes. Where do you morons come from I wonder. A moron factory? Yeah, take soccer numbers, then add them to NBA numbers, then add them to NHL numbers, then add them to NFL numbers, then add them to Olympics numbers, and you still wont have enough to compete with eSports viewership. Now get back to your cave.

I wouldn't say fake life. It's more like a gamble since the fame is real. Some of these ex pro players become millionaires using there fame to make wealth. "Imaqtpie" being one of them. Someone like "Faker" and "Apdo" would probably make 10x more than "Imaqtpie" in South Korea. Gaming culture is much more of a thing in South Korea as well.

In order for you to play in USA for a American eSports team and you are a foreigner, you need to apply for an athlete VISA. The first pro-gamer with an athlete VISA was issued to Violet, a SC2 programer from Korea.

Bubba Gurt Guys it's trying to communicate. If you really want to complain about the video, why not watch the whole thing? Did you even LISTEN to the speech that was given at the end? "Rather than a marginalized subculture that parents refuse to understand, eSports is the newest part of mainstream culture. And before long, anyone trying to ignore its global significance will be lying in its wake, wondering how computer games took over the world." You're going to be one of those people. Whether you believe it or not. You can reply to this with some shitty comeback if you want, but all that it will do is just prove you're either an idiot or a troll.

Not at all actually -- at least not in this part. I think people are bringing the obvious lack of enthusiasm he showed in previous videos to this one, and it just doesn't apply. Swaganomics 101: Jimmy Rustles I haven't seen this guy anywhere else, he instantly comes across as someone who obviously dislikes the whole gaming scene. And this is shown throughout the entire video, you cannot call this 'lack of enthusiasm', I'm not only looking at his body language, but what he says and how he reacts shows most of all that he dislikes this entire scene. His body language and reporting skills are far worse and this person should not at all be doing this.

If you are a dedicated gamer and are offended, well..

MackP I understand your point of view, but my original thoughts are still my opinion on it.. I'm normally use to just overlooking that sort of thing in journalists - nothing really doesn't have some form of prejudice... hiding our thoughts to something is somewhat impossible imo. I was already aware of the vast expenditure used on it. But I feel this documentary did a good job of taking me to the other side without feeling like it was swayed to any particular side. Thanks :)

Neeno Brown Read this www.dailydot.com/esports/dota-2-prize-distribution-players/ Dota's distribution of prize money is so skewed that 72% of teams no longer exist after the International. That means either you make to the International or you're done. Meanwhile in LoL, there aren't any consequence for losing at worlds. Teams that qualify for worlds are guaranteed a spot to compete next year in their regions. That means future salary and prize money for participating in Worlds.

What people don't seem to realize about e-sports, is that, in an intensive match, it is extremely physically taxing. One has to be physically quite fit to endure the extreme stress of a lot of high-paced games, especially when the stakes are high. This also applies to games like chess. It isn't just about having a fast mind.

"those people used to be called nerds". actually they don't get called nerds in their country. nerds is a western term which is an alien concept in Asia.
@JonCrichton
@JonCrichton 9 лет назад
Being called a nerd for playing video games is not a alien concept in Asia. Otaku is a synonym of nerd and is a common derogatory term used in both Japan and South Korea. I think the host of the documentary was making the point that it's difficult to marginalize these competitive game players now that they can win a lot of money and have thousands of fans.

People had to collect charity for him, because they felt the need to show solidarity for him instead in engaging into real events in order to change the environment in which these kind of stories are created (conditions of poverty, not esports). *And I am not braging.* Stand up and cheer for him. Valdemar Czarskii Lmfao South Korea hasn't been known for Star Craft since 2009. League of Legends is by far the dominate esport in not only korea, but in all of Asia. They still hold the top 20 spots in the world for SC2 players, but it's no where near as big as League.

League was a bigger event. And this series wasn't about League, it was on e-sports. Though they should have went into the history of Starcraft 1 and why E-sports got big in Korea. They are AthL33Ts. Seriously guys, this is a new frontier. We've always had competitions to be the best but nothing has ever challenged our mind and how fast we can think with very few physical limitations. This is that challenge. You practice, you get better. You try starting league of legends, playing it for a month consistently and trying to beat a bronze player (lowest rank). The decisions/actions per minute blows all other sports out of the water. In league of legends a fight lasts between one second and eight seconds where everything you know about your champion and the game is tested. The reason they have a crowd is because their audience knows how hard it is to do what they're doing. Nobody here is talking about pull-ups or weights because you can't ask a footballer to race against a marathon runner or a cyclist. E-Sports is a different kind of sport and these guys deserve their shit.

This documentary seems less about eSports and more about uptight nerd-haters pissing on computer gaming culture from a great height. The guy didn't even try and appreciate the students having a few drinks and playing computer games together as communal recreation. He just sulked and then dragged them to a club as something they 'should be doing'. It's easy to be derisive when you have no appreciation of the significance of the activity in context.

Benjamin Helm Already Answered somebody with a simillar comment, not going to even bother writting a new one so here. You obviously know nothing. " www.dailydot.com/esports/dota-2-prize-distribution-players/ Dota's distribution of prize money is so skewed that 72% of teams no longer exist after the International. That means either you make to the International or you're done. Meanwhile in LoL, there aren't any consequence for losing at worlds. Teams that qualify for worlds are guaranteed a spot to compete next year in their regions. That means future salary and prize money for participating in Worlds" League of legends players play in actual leagues that are similar to Real sports league,Players are on Contracts and Salaries and are able to grow with their team and become better through the years, instead of just having this big tournament where you either win or disapear .And it's not like the International is bigger in any other way than in the cash prize. Which is irrelevant anyway since LOL players have Annual Salaries which , if you were to put all salary money together, would probably crush The International's cash prize.

Very good effort, but I didn't really like the series. It seemed like a majority of the reporting was done with little preparation or education beforehand, and it failed to get an insiders look at the culture. It also seemed to marginalize a group of people who already suffer from disparaging comments. By insisting a group of people who normally frequent a PC Bang go to a club, it takes the objectivity out of the reporting and it cheapens the experience. Failing multiple times to get an interview with one of the most popular people in esports DURING an event is not because Cloud 9 is a jerk, it's because the reporter failed to be assertive when there are hundreds of people vying for his attention. The series is boiled down to one sentence: "This is a computer game, and for some reason people like to watch it." It should have said "This is esports, and this is why people watch it.
