The Minecraft Mob Votes: Why Do They Exist? 

Merry Christmas everyone!

I just want them to do it like the Biome votes, the winner comes first, the rest come later, and pretty much everyone wins.

there may be 141 million active Minecraft players, however because the mob vote happens on twitter only a small number of players are going to vote. I've been a Minecraft fan for over a decade now and I haven't voted once due to the voting platform. Voting should be moved to the launcher or on Minecraft's main menu.

"We've identified three empty niches in the current gameplay loop. You get to pick which two get to stay empty forever!"

I think the main reason there was anger is because when you look at it from a bare feature standpoint, the glow squid was the most featureless. As in it was the one with the smallest uses compared to the others.

Honestly twitter’s probably not the best place to hold mob and biome votes for many reasons.

Whenever someone says something along the lines of “the other person is human” I think of this quote from the onion “And then I remember he’s a human too, which means he has his own family too, and thats an exploitable weakness” lol

fun fact, the phantom was so hated that they actually added in a option for you to disable them before you create a world.

I personally think the losing mobs should be confirmed to get added like losing biomes. This will make all of the community happy and also will keep the value of the vote

Thinking about it, all mobs in 2017 would be annoying. - Mob a can drown you in the ocean while trying to cross it in your boat - Mob c can accidentally disenchant your items if you drop your god tier sword, and it hides in the ground - Mob d can make it more difficult when getting blaze rods or wither skulls In an alternate universe we would be pissed that we didn't vote for the phantom

I REALLY hope Mojang decides to add the rejected Mob in the game. And is it just me that thinks that the monster of the sea seems so cool? It actually gives ocean exploration an actual danger (even if you don't explore ocean monuments).

The fact that they poked a lot of fun at the drama the last mob vote caused during the lead up to the latest one proves that they know it isnt a good thing for the community. Next mob vote, people should pressure them to change to the biome vote format, enough is enough.

I feel like mob should be based around a theme either all passive mobs, all neutral mobs, all hostile mobs, or all gimmicky mobs, that way even if one option isn't popular, there is no outrage, and we still might get something interesting.

When thinking about 2017's mob vote, you could actually find most of the mobs annoying. Mob A: imagine not being able to swim because every time you go in the water you get bit by a barnicle Mob B: you know the story Mob C: imagine walking around peacefully and suddenly being bit by something that you can hardly see Mob D: actually this one wouldn't be annoying as it wouldn't be intrusive in everyday gameplay

Mojang: If you hate it why did you vote for it! Us: If you knew we might hate it, why did you not show in game footage of it!

Mob votes should be more transparent so we know what we're actually getting while still holding on to some special features to surprise us when it's finally added.

I would be a big fan of if they had a silver medal bracket so to speak. Take the losers of each year with similarities and have another vote, maybe as a mid year event.

The glow squid isn't bad, it just doesn't live up to it's potential. And due to the stans. You know the ones.

I think Mojang should add more uses to the phantom and its drops, they still seem like an unfinished mob to me. The phantom membrane, while useful, isn't balanced for the stage of the game at which they begin appearing, considering an elytra is a late game feature. I think perhaps a "lesser elytra" or a handheld glider of some sorts made of phantom membranes which allows the player to glide would be a good addition. Think of the shulker, its definitely somewhat annoying to fight, but its drop always makes killing one worth it. As of now there isn't really anything to justify their existence, but I definitely think some simple changes could make phantoms less of an annoyance and more of a challenge with a reward tied in with it. About the glow squid, I think its a great addition despite its lack of real use. The glow item frames and glow signs are very cool, but they're not something every player is going to use. I think the main thing that makes the glow squid a justified addition is it's contribution to atmosphere. Everytime I see a glow squid in an aquifer it just looks great, and I think thats a perfectly fine reason to have a mob in the game as long as it's cool enough. (But I still would've liked for the iceologer to have been added instead.)

Honestly I kinda just want all of them added. Minecraft is owned by a Multi-Billion dollar company and yet the updates to Minecraft are so few and far between with such minimal work added in each update it just seems like a skeleton crew running Minecraft

I really wish Mojang would add the sea monster. That was one of my favorite mob concepts.

Two points: The Phantom was delivered poorly, it has a lot of potential. I think Mob Votes should be held off Twitter. I have to make trash accounts to participate due to issues with Twitter and their handling of inactive accounts. E: Over 400 upvotes and a like from the creator, noice. Thxs ya'll!

All of this is mostly mojangs fault for poorly implementing these mobs. I feel that people dont criticize mojang enough for all the bad decisions they make.

You know what else I hate? In all these animations they make to show the new things, they include stuff that isn't, has never and will never be in the game. Snorkles and diving equipment? A submarine? Etc etc.

One overarching issue is that it’s Twitter. You will never find a more wretched hive of rage and entitlement. But besides that, having the losers _eliminated_ instead of just _delayed_ made things more anxiety-inducing. Plus yeah it doesn’t help that mobs tend to invoke more emotional attachment than blocks (although, back in the beta days, mossy cobblestone was more precious than diamonds). Now, in regards to specific votes, the first went the way it did I think because the idea of a flying mob for the overworld was more enticing than squid 2.0, blaze 2.0, and a mob that probably just sounded too strange. (Maybe if they had described it as similar to a Like Like from LoZ it would’ve made more sense.) I also don’t think anyone truly anticipated that the Phantom would work the way it does. It’s the most annoying when you’re trying to get turtle scutes because eggs make more growth progress during the night, so you _have_ to stay awake several nights in a row. They should just drop the whole insomnia thing and make the mob something that spawns only at high altitudes at night. At least then perhaps they could be farmed and/or present a unique challenge for elytra users. The second vote was definitely imbalanced due to one mob being hostile and the others being passive. And it was definitely a victim of Twitter syndrome, with some overhyped content creator promising follow-backs for votes. But besides that, they didn’t really give any kind of ideas as to what players could use the mobs for, be it drops or some specific function, so the vote was decided on surface-level appeal alone. Now we get to experience the awe and wonder of watching glow squids fall down from cave aquifers and suffocate to death. So majestic . . . Finally, the last mob vote was probably the most well-done. They had 3 passive mobs and their functions were clearly explained, so players were able to make an informed decision. The Glare lost because it was too niche and basic, the Copper Golem lost because it seemed too random/useless to the average player, and the Allay won because it seemed both cute and useful to everyone from new players to hardcore redstoners. I really hope the Copper Golem comes back in the future with better functionality. Maybe it could be “programmed” to do specific tasks. I love the idea of having a copper golem dig out a strip mine while a few allays shuttle the drops back to a chest at the entrance, or maybe having a system where the player can mark a volume of blocks and the copper golems can clear it out.

So long as they have a vote off of Twitter (like on their website) I think the votes would be better recieved. A lot of people such as myself don't havw Twitter accounts, and cannot actually vote, plus as we saw during the 2019 vote there was a lot of toxicity that I think could be avoided by having it on a different platform. Ultimately theres no perfect solution, but having alternative platforms to vote with would be beneficial

With the biome vote we don’t really have to be worried about them being gone forever. We saw that with the Winners (Taiga and Mountains) they added them first in the ‘Village and Pillage’ and ‘Caves and Clifts’ respectively. I assume they’ll be working backwards as the ‘Wild Update’ focuses on the Swamp which if I recall was the runner up in 2019. As for the mob votes while I can’t speak for everyone I myself am a fairly casual player and didn’t really mind which won. While I did have a favorite (the Chillager and Copper Golem) I wasn’t going to go out of my way to attack those who did like the ones who won. Also from my time on the Internet I’ve learned that the vocal minority tends to be the loudest which is what the Mojang team was probably poking fun at with that “never controversial” tweet. If they do decide to change it to the Biome Vote route in the future I wonder how exactly they’re going to implement them in.

I think it’s best that Mojang just adds all 3 instead of a vote because that causes fighting

I liked the mob votes at first, it really felt like they had overflow ideas. But later mob votes feel like I have to pig from 3 pieces of trash (lets be honest allay, irongolem & flying bush didn't do much)

the iceoleger needs a second chance, it seriously got the short end of the stick. even as a moobloom enjoyer, it definitely deserves a second chance before the moobloom

I would just be happy to get the other mobs eventually. Even if they ended up doing different things. You said it right, there's an emotional attachment to them. I don't even care if he doesn't push buttons anymore or whatever, I just want the Copper Golem in the game at all, in any capacity.

I would love to see a mod where all of the rejected votes get added in.

My idea is this: host the vote through the launcher, let voting start one day before MCL, with descriptions on the voting page (with any main notes from either videos or devs responding with clarifications). Controversially, you could hide the results as well

I actually love the glow squids since I think it is hilarious that everytime I go underground I can find glow ink sacs from dead glow squids right next to a waterfall😆

If the ideas of the votes are good enough for making it into the options, then they are good enough to make it into the game, that's why I believe that Mojang never discard the ideas that lost

I think hosting them in the launcher and having a 24 hour timeframe would be good ideas, as that way the global community can actually vote, and people who dont play the game cant

Although to be honest with you, many games add huge content to updates, multiple mobs etc and its un-understandable why mojang doesn't add multiple or all the mobs as it is not like the company doesn't have the resources or team, I do agree with you by saying it's better that they don't give us a view of what can and cannot be added. I'm new to the game and I recently found out about mob votes, and the glowsquid seems to be rather useless, and it would be a lot cooler if they got everyone to the same level of happiness by adding what everyone wants. And what you said does apply, adding whirlpools is just not the same as a mob, it would be a lot cooler if they downright added the stuff. Maybe this is coming from me because I haven't played the game enough or because I'm coming from different communities with different methods of handling updates, but my view still stands

I think the Hovering Inferno should have been added in the Nether Update.

The Order of Development change up that the biome votes did I think is the best way to do this. Maybe the round one loser gets eliminated but the second loser gets added later?

It would be way better if the Mob/Biome Vote would be made *IN THE GAME LAUNCHER* not on Twitter... Mojang needs to know that not every Minecraft Player has Twitter

2017 was a different time for the community, where the biggest content creators by a long shot were those on the hermitcraft server, and in fact, the 2017 vote was swung a lot by major RU-vidrs, mainly with people like mumbo being super for mob b, which of course he later regretted and decided not to influence the vote again lol

I'm gonna be honest here, why will they add 3 mobs and let them fight together to take one spot? it's kind of dumb that they'll add 3 mobs and only 1 will be chosen to be added, they just wasted a lot of time conceptualizing the unlucky mob, which is frustrating, imagine that idea and effort they made, just to go to the scrapyard of features. They should just add all three of them so players can always discover new things every major update, it will also expands Minecraft's mob biodiversity on an even larger scale, plus ALL of Minecraft's Community will get to experience them all without debates on the internet, such as Twitter, etc. This isn't a rant or a toxic comment, just my personal opinion

We literally could’ve voted for and gotten a literal boss blaze, what we got instead, attacking flies.

It’s insane that I could’ve changed the outcome of the first vote on my own by making 72 alt accounts, which would be quite doable, considering I knew about the vote beforehand and could’ve made them in advance. It’s even more insane that maybe one single person did change the outcome with fully manual alts, no bots required.

The fact that glare never made it still saddens me, glare was truly a unique looking mob, a flying moss bush ghost that not only tells you about your unlit blocks but also scare away hostile mobs. F in the chat.

If you showed a minecraft player who kept an eye on the online sphere that watched youtube vids and whatnot from 2012-19 the options for the 2020 mob vote, how many do you think would genuinely and unironically vote for "Squid 2" over a new thing to fight in the mountains and something that interacts with bees? We didn't even know until pre release versions of 1.18 that the glow squid would drop anything and we *did* know that it didn't actually ambiently glow. Admittedly I think we all underestimate the power of a creator who's fanbase is almost entirely all active on the same platform the vote is being held on. If it weren't for that the glow squid would have no right getting anywhere past round 1. There wasn't a good reason presented to us at all to vote for it over anything else. It's just a bummer. It's gotten to the point where Mojang had to make the vote have mobs that are inconsequential so there was nothing of value lost so people didn't feel the need to start fights on twitter. They should honestly just host the vote on the website or in the launcher. Maybe in game for Bedrock and in the launcher for Java? Twitter is just such a low key abominable online space, but hey, lots of people, lots of engagement, big numbers.

i personally like the mob and biome voting. i really like how mojang has given the community ways to decide what new features can be added to the game, however i think the way that they do it is fairly easy to disagree with. i like how with biome voting even if what you choose doesn’t win, it still makes it, just in a later update. if they could find a way to do something similar with mobs that are alike, i think there would be a lot less controversy since everyone can get the mob or biome that they voted for! this was a rlly interesting video, keep up the amazing work! 🤩🤩

I liked the 2021 mob vote because I didn’t care who won. I loved them all

I feel a bit cheated with the glowsquid despite voting for it. The mob showcase was misleading, implying a) a system for dynamic lights b) a hypnosis effect Instead, it really was just a recolour with different drops. Nothing the glow squid or glow ink does, could not have been done already in game with glowstone dust, if Mojang wanted it to. But I'm sure you've heard that before.

you make a really good point about how in this years vote the mobs were very similar in there purpose being to help the player. it would be interesting to see maybe a future mob vote that could be hostile mobs all in the same biome like maybe cave monsters to add to the newest update. as always good stuff! keep it coming!

I think the first 2 mob votes were a failure. The Phantom is considered one of the worst mobs in the game, and it wasn't very clear what they would end up being. I think we should blame Mojang for making the Phantom so bad, rather than the community voting wrong. The Glow Squid isn't a particularly interesting mob at all, it just... glows. Yeah, glow ink sacs are cool, but they weren't even promised. Just think about how cool an Iceologer would've been. I think the last vote was a success. Both Allays and Copper Golems are pretty cool. I personally prefer the Allay, but I know the golems were loved too. And the Glare... exists. Imagine if the Glare won. Wow.

we as a community need to start taking these votes with the consideration of the impact to the flow of gameplay. if the mob is detrimental to the design of the game we shouldn't vote them in. The phantom just may be the most annoying mob in the game and the glow squid added next to no material value to Minecraft's gameplay loop.

Mob A and Mob D are such cool ideas. I would’ve gone with Mob A since Mob D would’ve been annoying af, cuz I hate being on fire, especially when it doesn’t hurt and just covers my screen. I honestly never saw the “potential” that the Phantom had, that would’ve literally been second to last on my vote no matter what. Edit: I also voted for the Glare because it would’ve added very interesting lore implications and was very creative and surreal.

watching this video makes curious as to what would've happened if any other mobs were voted into the game instead, and this makes me even more exited for the 2022 mob vote because all the mobs look interesting.

I'd love to see a biome vote that's done through the Minecraft website or launcher. I think it'd be really cool if the biomes were for the end or nether. I also think that a very basic public playtest of the mobs/ biomes would be good, as no one would've voted for the phantom if they knew how it was gonna turn out.

Mob votes are a good idea. However the issue I have (and mentioned in the video) is that they seem gone for good. For the player it can be sad to see what could if been go away. But for the developer I hope that when the vote happens that they are a concept idea and haven't been fully programed yet. Imagine working on a project for months on end only for it to not get finished. And as a creator myself, the things I create I have a deeper level of care. Only time will tell if the lost ones ever make it in game.

update votes are a way to cut down on updating time and debating, by giving the player a sense of control while turning their heads away from the fact that there is generally less content

I think it's also worth noting how voting was done, as far as what platform was used. I know my kids wanted to vote (both play far more than I) in 2017 but had no twitter account (a requirement to vote that year).

Looking back at it, I wish the insomnia mechanic was expanded more upon. Like making the player hallucinate, which can make the game scary, but Mojang would never do that because, they want to go into a super Kid friendly direction, which I feel makes the game restricted.

We could have got for a literal ice wizard, but we chose a squid which glows for no reason We could have literally got a blaze god-like mob but we bought some undead mosquitoes We could have got all of 3 cute pets but we bought a flying hopper This vote is all about rigging

I have competed in EVERY mob vote, and never has my favorite mob won the vote. It sucked at first but I guess I accepted it eventually

I have never even known when a vote is happening until after it happens, but I do get angry when I see what I would have voted for lost

I think it's so strange that possible the coolest moob from the first mob vote was also the first to be eliminated... Also once when I wanted to take part in the vote (to vote for copper golem - allay still seems good but I was more excited for a copper golem) i was to late. I think that when this mob votes takes place is miscommunicated to, which may be an issue for people who rarely or just do not at all use Twitter. (For the glowsquid/moobloom/iceologer I wasn't caring that much for the winner... iceologer did seem most interesting one BUT on the other hand I hardly enjoy the fighting aspect of Minecraft, so now looking back at it I'm happy glowsquid win, especially that it get some actually cool use - small but still cool) Also the idea of other mobs being rejected is - especially seeing how close the result sometimes was - just stupid. The biome votes are great that they are just about ordering. I mean perhaps mob votes shouldn't about guarantee that all will be added some day (as of course when one would get just 5-10% of votes rejecting it may not be so horrible idea, but rejecting a mob, which was still very wanted be almost half of people who vote? That's just outrageous). And the feature which may be somewhat derivated from these mobs... I think connecting them to these mobs is farfetched. I mean they could plant some seeds of ideas in developers brains but i the end those things are so much different that they can't really be assumed as compensation, they feel more like things that would happen anyway regardless if these old mobs ideas did even occur (I mean those are NOT that specific to make real connection) or are just completely unconnected. Theory of a vocal minority may pretty much be true... I mean I am a somewhat casual fan of Minecraft, and I'm not upset by those votes. Even when I don't like the result. If there is one thing I'm upset about is this excluding of losing option. But again it's not that big deal to me. But still I think they realize how controversial is brings attention to it and as much as it may not have been their intention they wanna somewhat continue it to still get the attention. Also, Taiga won, we got it, Mountains won, we got it, and now we are going to get it... isn't it a perfect time to make now a mob vote of badlands, desert and savanna? Maybe with adding some new ideas for what may be added to them (like a new structure, or sub-biome for example oasis with palm trees for deserts)

Minecraft currently has the issue that the only part of the playerbase that's listened to by Mojang is Twitter, and it sucks because the Minecraft community on Twitter is hands down one of the worst. That whole "DREAM RIGGED THE MOB VOTE!" wouldn't have even happened if other parts of the community other than those with a Twitter account were allowed to cast a vote. Also it's just ridiculous that they flat out refuse to add the losing mobs to the game. Why does the company behind Minecraft need some sort of advertisement to get people to tune into Minecraft Live? It's Minecraft! It's the best-selling videogame in HISTORY! It doesn't need anything to get engagement, an event being attached to Minecraft is already engaging enough! The fact that Mojang is trying to present themselves as simply a small dev team behind a small indie game is absolutely ridiculous. They're not quite as bad as Game Freak in that regard, but if they continue down this path they might as well be.

Looking back at it, its kinda of ridiculous how the Taiga won the vote. We got foxes (which do nothing except look cute and steal your items), Sweet Berries (which do nothing other than being a mediocre food source), and Campfires (which is the only feature that's actually useful in a lot of ways). The alternatives were two different entire wood/tree types, which is a lot more blocks than just the campfire!

When the allay won this year I just felt kind of ok because I was really rooting for the copper golem to win. The more I thought about it though, the more I started to really like the allay, imo in 1.19 they should make the allay spawn in the updated birch forests.

the mob votes recently are more centered toward passive mobs... little bit of opinion here but the game needs a little more challenge when it comes to endgame. any new bosses (like the warden) or pillagers you need to fight in a raid. Edit: also these have to be taken place off of the minecraft website, not twitter

If they told people "oh, and by the way, there's going to be an entire rework of the ocean biome", the Phantom would not have won.

Mobs require more thought to implement than you'd expect, so Mojang just asks the community whether they should go through the effort of developing mob concepts. For example, the Iceologer seems simple to implement on paper: it's just an illager with a special ice-dropping attack. But do you make that ice-dropping attack a breakable entity or actual falling blocks? And where would the Iceologer spawn? If it's exclusive to a mountain structure, how would the mountain structure accommodate an attack that requires vertical space to work? If you have no exclusive structure, wouldn't an illager variant spawning at night feel unnatural? And what should it drop to reward the player for slaying it? And do the players even want this thing in their game in the first place?

I really didn't mind most of the out comes weather the mobs I wanted won or lost. How ever I am upset about the glowsquid winning I think it was dream but that could just be me. Also think there a good thing.

the first mob vote was on July 26th 2016, when a poll was held on jeb's twitter account. it was very informal, and only 20,000 people voted, but it gave us the llama
