LOL in the first quarter of Game 1 of the Finals they actually had a contest to hit a shot from that same spot on the baseline, and of course they chose someone who could shoot so he won like $1000 for it. Insane how close Sheed came to blocking that shot. I remember at the start of the game Sean hit two threes and all I could think is with Elliott hot the Spurs are going to blow Portland out. But after those two threes it was all downhill until that run in the third.

Dude, I lived it. We were walking out the court almost to the outside of the Alamodome to beat traffic, when the crowd exploded. We ran back in, and saw on the Jumbo Tron, Elliott hit the 3. I still remember it as a kid. After that I was always trying to hit a 3 like that lol, on the tippy toes.

meh the spurs won in 4..the blazers were young..not ready...the shot would of just delayed the inevitable even if he missed...it is what it is...david duncan elliot avery were a good 4 some that playoffs and mario ellie showed up in the finals...jarren hit some big threes...malik rose was a good defender..you were not beating that team that year...

Spurs got back at all their old nemesis in the 2000s. They also lost plenty of heart breakers too. Dallas 2006 comes to mind also Memphis 2011 and Lakers more than once lol

They also never really had that good of a chance in that series, losing 4-1, though you can say Game 4 was winnable, but they didn't seem like they could win in LA that yr. regardless. Also, the Celtics were better than the Spurs that yr. in terms of both defense & match-ups head-to-head. The Spurs were a David West healthy back away from losing in 7 games to the Hornets in 08. They needed the cheap-shot-Bob to win it in 07, which to me was the weakest Spurs title of their 5, in a somewhat weak yr., w/ Kobe's Lakers being in their non-contention period after Shaq but before Gasol, after the 67win Mavs were bounced in the 1st round, though the 61win Suns team did have weapons on offense for sure, and that was the only good team the Spurs faced in the playoffs that yr., that probably should've beat em. I sincerely did not think the Duncan/Pop Spurs were serious threats again to take the title till 11, when they got shockingly bounced in the 1st round by the Grizzlies. The Spurs looked strong to me in 06, won a franchise-record 63 games, thought they'd repeat, but got so many bad breaks in the Mavs series. And then they were on a steady decline to me till 11. After 06, it seemed like they were just hanging on. They won the title in 07, but they weren't as good in 07 as they were in 06. And then a few athletes made them better again in 11 like Gary Neal & Richard Jefferson, and had they not traded away the latter for the non-athletic tough guy Stephen Jackson in 12, I think they would've hung on to beat the Thunder in 12, and would've beaten the top-heavy but thin Heat.

That's the part I feel like gets missed when talking about the Memorial Day Miracle. Yes, the Spurs were the better team, especially looking at it in hindsight of the sweep and the eventual dynasty that blossomed, but at the time, it was far from a given. I mean...SA was *known* for figuring out ways to lose in the postseason, be it the Strickland debacle in '91, the GSW upset, the HOU upset, etc. If SA loses game 2 and goes to the Rose Garden tied 1-1, who knows how that Blazers' momentum could have coalesced (remember, they'd just eliminated Utah, who was the odds-on favorite coming into the season to finally get over the hump and win a title with MJ retiring from Chicago). The MDM was the first time the city of San Antonio collectively actually believed the team would get it done and win it all. You win a game like that, it's just magical. That feeling is infectious.

They literally shut down The Forum. The last series the Lakers ever played at the Forum was a 4-0 sweep by the Spurs. I still get a kick out of that. :)

It's amazing how that never gets mentioned. Similar to when the Sixers won the championship and also swept the Showtime Lakers.

Sean Elliot had been through a lot of adversity. That 3-pointer was the greatest moment of his career and I think it resonated with people so much at the time because of what he'd gone through.

I remember being floored a couple of weeks after the title when on vacation I read in a Canadian newspaper that Sean needed a transplant ASAP and that he had played through kidney failure. I can't imagine what that must have felt like, he probably had trouble even keeping food down, and here he is as a starter the team depends on playing deep into the playoffs in an extremely physical era.

2006-7 was his last 20-10 season, 9 years before he retired.

Now the NBA has red carpets out and players run freely anywhere they want to go. League made it an offensive league as opposed to a tough and talented league.
