Correction, the Crank on the Gauss Rifle is used, you character will use it when its got low durability and the weapon jams, so presumably the Crank serves as a quick and easy way to unjam the weapon

My guess is the 2mm ec would be a tungsten alloy, like one of the rods used for TIG welding because of its size, the fact that you can sharpen them for better penetration, and high melting point.
@MegaZeta
@MegaZeta Год назад
Though, in science fiction of the era when _Fallout_ came out, it was trendy to represent electromagnetic guns as shooting tiny little peas of material at speeds that turned targets to liquid or dust. That's probably what was intended. It was all over sci-fi prose of that time.
@violet8254
@violet8254 2 года назад
For the 2mm Gauss Rifle ammo I would have to think the ammo is essentially an iron version of tank APFSDS rounds, with the thin profile being for extreme armor penetration like the tank munition it would be based on, with a long long fin stabilized body for the needed mass and since stabilizing something that long and thin with rifling is difficult
@MegaZeta
@MegaZeta Год назад
That's probably not what was intended, though. _Fallout_ came out in an era when the trendy representation of electromagnetic-gun bullets was tiny peas of dense material that all but liquefied the target. It's just what was in style at the time in the genre.

The German one was used by it's allies as a powerful sniper, the 3 and new Vegas was American made and much cheaper, so it was given to expendible units, and the fallout 4 and 76 one was made as an attempt to upgrade them the great war happened before it could be finished.

Its seen on a Chinese poster though, I took the Fallout 3 variant to be a captured unit sent back to America for testing and evaluation. The fallout 4 variant I took to be something that American manufacturers developed as a copy of the Chinese and German models.

Thats a nice little fan theory but there is no evidence to support it. The biggest thing that explains all the different variants is that Bethesda really likes to retcon thing from the earlier Fallouts even the ones they've made. The alot from the first two Fallouts is no longer canon due to Bethesda. The change from Fallout 3/NV to the gun from 4 would also be a retcon up until they realised they could make money by adding the 3/NV model back into the game and call it a "prototype".

Different variants of Fallout gauss rifles are just different companies making weapons for the military. The US military is usually going to have a trial between multiple competitors to see who will get the contract. They set a series of parameters they want met and various companies will try their best to fulfill those parameters. Look at the recent NGSW trial there were 4 companies that entered the trial (Only three are usually shown) but SIG won the competition beating out the other competitors. Sig is now also selling a civilian variant of the winner rifle the MCX spear. True Velocity also entered but lost will also be selling their rifle to civilians called AMICUS. Textron another competitor in the trial is not selling their gun.

ok this is a good train of though, Tungsten Carbide is often used for high penetration and high heat tolerance operations, tungsten is the densest metal iirc, which makes it a great penetrator but it is hard to fire it because of the weight, this is counteracted by making it akin to sabot rounds, long and thin, reducing mass and aerodynamic resistance in turn increasing reliability via flattening the the ballistics curve and increasing accuracy. Tungsten carbide also is magnetic a characteristic required for EM projectiles. Tungsten also helps with the projectile burning up since it has the highest melting point of all raw metals on earth. In conclusion Tungsten Carbide is the Ideal material for EM projectiles. This comes at the cost of manufacturing expenses and price tags, availability and weight.

In reference to the quality of the Enclave power armour being weaker, I believe that it is because of gameplay reasons. For the FO4 and 76 Gauss Rifle, I lean more to it being a hobbled-together homebrew design. There are quite a few people on YT making coil gun projects so, it wouldn't be too hard to think that some tinkerers were making their own in the FO universe. Maybe, after the bombs fell, the blueprints for it were found by some scavengers and, given that there is a LOT of scrap to work with, it became something for those with the technical know-how to cobble together.

Here is my take on the "Spasm Neuro Disrupter". I say it uses Ultrasound rather than direct energy. The U.S military already uses Ultrasound based weapons like the (USW) or (LRAD). In both cases the first organs to be effected are the inner ear and central nervous system. Leading those under its assault to "Feel like [their] head is going to explode". Prolonged exposure to Ultrasound of a 180 dB or greater will lead to death due too the following side effects. - auditory shifts, vibrotactile sensitivity change, muscle contraction, cardiovascular function change, central nervous system effects, vestibular (inner ear) effects, and chest wall/lung tissue effects, cavitations, hypothermia, and tissue shearing. This fits all of the descriptions of the "Spasm" gun and then some. With the exception of memory loss. However there is no doubt in my mind that memory loss would occur from your neurons being bombarded with deadly amounts of Ultrasound. *Note* - Ultrasound in water has been found to cause Encephalopathy in divers and marine mammals. Which can lead to a complete loss of cognitive function. Yikes.

the Fallout 3 and NV Gauss rifle is based on the Finnish Lahti Anti-Tank rifle from WW2, which had a crank on the side which was used for cycling the HEAVY recoil springs and bolt back instead of a conventional bolt, which would be near impossible to pull I think its likely the use for it in the Fallout canon is roughly the same, related to re-cocking the rifle when you misfire, which happens on low durability

One must be careful with the terms. Both gauss gun and coilgun are terms to define electromagnetic pulse weapon, but the configuration made them different. Also, the wiki mention that the Chinese copied and modified certain gauss rifle (perhaps a German one, can't remember) and when the American army captured and check them, they decided to also use the weapon. They used captured ones and few made through reverse engineering

Gauss rifles may have been made by competing weapons developers or the fallout 3 and new vegas one could have become to expensive or needed to many materials to build so they switched to a more bare bones cheaper rifle as the laser and plasma rifles are quite bare with exposed wiring and all metal uncomfortable looking stalks.

My head canon for gamma gun and gamma rounds. The gamma gun is a device that focuses gamma radiation (similar to radiography equipment IRL). The gun is likely to have its own internal long-lasting power source (can be a fusion cell) that powers all the electronics. The gamma rounds provide the radioactive material that is used to generate the gamma radiation. It is also possible that a portion of the radioactive material from the gamma rounds is shot out of the barrel with high velocity when the gamma gun fires, coating the enemy with radioactive dust and dealing very significant radiation. This could also explain the bright green circle of light when a gamma gun fires, as radioactive material is often portrayed as green in game (albeit not the case IRL) and we cannot see gamma ray. Think of the glowing sea where the green tint could be from radioactive particles suspended in air or coated on all objects. The small amount of damage dealt to radiation immune targets could be the impact damage from high velocity radioactive dust, as most radioactive elements are quite dense. So yeah, each time you pull the trigger of a gamma gun, you are creating a tiny glowing sea.

As far as I can tell the gauss riffle in FO1 and FO2 is a German make and they may have invented the weapon the one in FO3 is possibly a Chinese make while though it looks like the FO3 one the one in NV is possibly supposed to be the same model as 1 and 2 FO4 would probably be the American attempt at making one but due to time constraints may not have been fully fleshed out or could be modified as it has a charge capability. Though I could also see it being a post war weapon that people have built using other gauss weapons. Explaining why it has exposed coils and a charge meter. The 76 versions look alot more refined with their set up possibly they were American prototypes and as they wear down break and need to be fixed you gradually will have them look more like the FO4 version

The Presidential Gauss Rifle was a cut weapon from 76's race for the presidency event, however it was officially added ingame as a skin in Season 3 of the scoreboard. Also, the lever on the F3/NV Gauss Rifle is used during jammed animations, which were only added in NV. Lastly, and I swear its not me being nitpicky, but felt it was worth mentioning. In Fallout 76, the radio host pronounces the weapon as a "Gowse Rifle", and as far as I know that might be the only time it is mentioned ingame via voice over.

I'd love to see the pulse guns return in true form. Anywho, New Vegas's LAER and FO4's Tesla Rifle may be steps in the right direction to add proper lightning guns back into the series. There's something to be said of how they outclass plasma weapons in FO2, and I do think they could stand on their own compared to lasers and plasma in the Bethesda titles. Heck, laser beams and plasma bolts already have their own niche functions compared to each other, let alone charging up Gauss guns. Also, I forgot that both the Gauss rifle and plasma pistol are both German. I guess it makes sense, as a coilgun for a Gauss weapon would be handy to fling plasma like a bullet. Speaking of Gauss guns. Can I say that I gushed when I learned the Gauss Shotgun exists? If I'm not awaiting my beloved plasma pistol in a Fallout game, I'm itching for a pump-action or combat shotty. I'm trying my hardest not to give 76 a spin (I'm not an MMO person), but it becomes harder as time goes on.

As much as I love playing FO76, let me tell you it is a pain to do everything for the Gauss shotgun. The actual cost of the gun is easy enough, but you have to get to max reputation with one of the factions, then once you have it you have to craft it which uses legendary modules. Gold bullion used to purchase the gun has a limited amount you can purchase per day but you get a decent amount at the end of the quest, then the legendary modules you can only get 10 per server (so you can save your scrip and server hop) but you only can get 300 legendary scrip per day used to purchase the modules and they cost 50 scrip a peice. So you can purchase only 6 per day unless you get scrip from somewhere else like the scoreboard or other events so unless you grind like crazy you can only make 3 shotguns per day to get the right legendary roll that you want. I got the gauss minigun instead and it was probably a month grind in total to save up the gold bullion for all the mods and to get the right legendary effects. The time gates on everything is the major negative factor for this game for me having to hop on everyday to empty out the vendors for gold bullion, legendary scrip, and caps from vendors.

Firstly - my respect to fellow Mesmetron enjoyer. To other things: Most likely Fallout 4 gauss rifle is Tinker Tom's invention. If I remember things right, Railroad agents had gauss rifles and I speculate that gauss rifles we find in different places were, er, liberated from the hands of the dead agents. There is a gauss minigun in Fallout 76 too and you have to farm raider reputation to be able to buy it (or pray Minerva). It has respectable damage, few gun barrel variants, interesting design and shot sound and it would be a good heavy weapon, but 2mm EC ammo weights a ton even with corresponding perks. To use it efficiently you have to farm for armor with 3rd star for reducing ammo weight. Too bad, because it takes just steel and lead to make 2mm EC.

Here is my theory: The Germans create the first commercial gauss rifle The US buys the rifle and almost immidieatly starts reverse engineering it. The first US made gauss rifle prototype is created, from both salvaged parts from other weapons and parts of the german design (wood stock) (the 4/76 version) Later the design gets refined and an experimental dynamo powered, built in magazine prototype is released, wich uses a crank with a built in dynamo to generate the charge for the electro magnets. Also a built in telescopic sight is introduced (Creation club) Finally the 3/NV MF cell powered model is released, the magazine is moved to the other side, the crank is now used as an un jamming lever and the dynamo is replaced with a MF cell slot. The finall model of the US gauss rifle is the YCS-186 but only one prototype manages to be finished before the war. edit: english

Maybe the gauss rifle in fallout 2 is a German model, which the US bought and was attempting to copy, and that copy became the version in fallout 3 and New Vegas because both the Enclave and the Brotherhood (both of which have ties to the prewar military) brought that copied version with them. The gauss rifle in fallout 4 could be a different copy made by the prewar Institute and the US military in the area, as it would make sense to have multiple agencies/divisions working on a copy.

O.K. here's my hypothesis on how the gauss shotgun works: back in the US Army's Special Purpose Individual Weapon program a hypervelocity flechette firearm was developed; the flechettes were accelerated so fast they would break apart in the barrel so special materials had to be developed for the flechettes. In Fallout 4 VATS the 2mm EC is portrayed as a flechette so I figured the gauss shotgun instead of accelerating the round the entire length of the barrel like the rifle and pistol does it accelerates the round all out once ripping it apart then most of the barrel length and a sizeable amount of the energy in the 2mm EC is used to channel the shrapnel through the holes you see at the business end. But I likely put more thought into that then the devs at Bethesda did.

I had written my concept for how energy weapons work in my science fiction book, but how fallout energy weapons work is a bit more realistic. The pulse rifle in fallout 1 looks the first half of a AK-47, which i guess nobody pointed out, strange. Plus many of the wattz energy weapons in fallout 1&2 look like M16s, Browning Auto 5', and Remington Model 8, then somebody slapped the electro magnetic barrel The pulse gun in New Vegas have a related look towards the blasters from Buck Rogers (1936) or Flash Gordon (1939), ironically the alien rifle from Fallout 3 are a near one to one match. The Pulse gun from fallout tactics looks an exact match for the ray gun used in sky captain and the world of tomorrow

To my knowledge Fallout 4 expanded on the electromagnetic cartridge round without contradicting anything of the earlier fallout's. Yes the EC magazine has a small fission Battery Source. It is labeled as "disposable one time use" in several military compounds with in Fallout 4 and its DLC. The newer gauss rifle is, to my knowledge, made by The Enclave in the same vein as Midwestern power armor or the post-war x01

I'm assuming that the prototype gauss rifle from the creation club was the military's first attempt at replicating the M72 which was then finalized for 3 and NV. As for the Fallout 4/76 version, it could have been an even more recent prototype that the military was developing pre-war after seeing success with it during field use which would explain why it's much better than the past games.

I’m almost certain the Gauss rifle in 1/2 are from Germany, and were likely in use by multiple countries including the US, the one in 3/NV was actually Chinese, despite the trend of saying things in the Simulation are wrong, the Gause rifle in 4/76 were likely American copies/improvements based off the Chinese Gauss Japanese rifle, with perhaps the Gauss shotgun being a design variant that was intended for the Secret Service

So, as far as I'm aware, the different Gauss rifle models across the series are actually different countries' takes on the concept of a Gauss Gun. The Chinese seems to have invested in the concept as an attempt to easily pierce through Power Armor. The Fallout 3/NV Gauss Rifles appear to act more like a dedicated Anti-Material Rifle, or a very 'video game-y' single-shot rifle (where it has one *extremely* powerful shot before reloading). They also developed the MEC Gauss Minigun in Fallout Tactics, which seems to be more for extremely deadly suppressing fire and anti-infantry engagements. The Germans, have two confirmed Gauss Weapons that we know of: the M72 Gauss Rifle from Fallout 2 and the PPK12 Gauss Pistol from Fallout 2 and 76. But given the design similarities to the PPK12, I'm going to assume that the Gauss Shotgun and Gauss Minigun from 76 are also of German design. All the German Gauss weapons seem have anti-infantry designs, as all of them are either semi- or fully automatic and have magazines greater than one. The Gauss Rifle from Fallout 4 and 76 seems to be an American attempt to copy or adapt the German designs. They function identically to the other Gauss small guns from 76 (or, rather, the Gauss small guns from 76 function identically to the Gauss Rifle from 4 and 76) and are obviously meant to fill the same role as those weapons. I'm going to guess that the US military commissioned Wattz Electronics to do it, for no other reason than Electronics is in their name. They probably started working on it sometime relatively close to the start of the Great War, as that version is obviously still in the early developmental stages, with exposed coils and very rough and crudely machined parts.

perhaps both the fallout 3/new vegas and the fallout 4/76 gauss rifles were both in military trials to replace the german design but the fo3 design won and thats why its on the guns and bullets cover and in use in anchorage, the prototype designation could be fallouts version of the real life experimental designation which is denoted with an X in its name much like the brand new XM5 the Army just adopted

Alternate lore explanation for the Gauss rifle differences: The American Military branches have had different weapons to fulfill the same or similar roles. (M14/EBR, SCAR-H, SR-25, etc). So it's not impossible that both the German and Fo3/NV varieties were in active service. The creation club one is noncanon, but could always just be that, a production prototype. Fo4s is interesting, with powerful SCIENCE! technology commonly available, it's entirely possible it was a kind of "makers" weapon, as like a hobby magazine design or something. Just to explain the homemade look. Considering Nixie tubes are something of a hobby surplus technology today. Edit: spelling

I believe the crank on the Gauss Rifle is supposed to act as a sort of charging or bolt handle. In the New Vegas jam animation, the crank just magically pops into the top position, which the player then pulls down, which makes me believe that it was always intended to do that in normal use, presumably as a way to power the shot, and the lack thereof may have been a developer oversight. However, looking at the model, it's not possible to do a full revolution due to the jutting side "magazine" appearing to get in the way, so it can't function like the Laser Musket in Fallout 4. Also, the same jam animation is in the Fallout 3 version, but the handle doesn't move at all, so the player just does some cool fancy hand magic and the jam is cleared.

Alright I'll give this my best shot The Fallout 4/76 Gauss rifle was likely an early prototype for a replacement for the Fallout 3/NV version,which was designed as a response to the HK design becoming suddenly unavailable due to the collapse of most European countries. Given how the 3/NV version is a seeming downgrade from the 4/76 and 2/tactics version, this fits.The 4/76 design due to being essentially an open skeleton with fairly easy to reproduce/substitute parts would lead to "wasteland" variants being produced fairly early on as the higher quantity of functional power armor suits in the first few years after the war (along with some early raiders being former US military,still using their equipment) would lead to people producing weapons based on the design they could more easily see how it worked from pre war tech mags,etc. The 2mm EC round is used because its an all in one system, but theoretically Gauss rifles should be able to shoot any ferrous projectile as long as it is the proper size and a power source to charge the capacitors.

There is a clear explanation for the Fallout 4 Gauss Rifle. It's simply a civilian firearm, rather then a military one. Which explains it's less refined look and other fragile design features. It's not meant to be taken out into the hells of wall. But simply dug out of the gun safe afew times a year to be taken to the range. Also explaining the comically large suppressor, because only someone at a range would shoot that long of a gun, unless it was out of desperation/necessity.

I personally don't count any CC or Atom Shop content as canon (i barely consider 76 canon), but if i had to try to explain the differences in Cause rifles, M72 as you said was a German import used probably as a test bed for the US's own gauss experiments and R&D. The Gauss rifle in 3 and NV is the official, military approved version used probably by special forces given the advanced nature of the weapon system. Fallout 4 may be a post-war remake given it's scrappy appearance, with some mechanically inclined survivor finding old schematics or something and cobbling it together before proliferating their design out. Fallout 76 is a clusterfuck so the "Presidential" one that got cut is just Bethesda being bad and lore consistency even more so than usual. If i *had* to explain it, maybe it got retroactively made somewhere in Vault 76 or something.
@thescotslair
@thescotslair 2 года назад
So the M72, the German engineered gun, was prolly used by some sort of higher ranked military force on the west coast, as Special Forces are allowed to use any equipment they please. The Fo3 and New Vegas variants were Americas first attempt to replicate that gun, and it saw limited use in the wider military, probably as a field-test gun, like the X variant rifles the US Military fields evety once in awhile. Finally, the Fallout 4 and 76 variants may very well be newer prototypes developed by the US Military to get close to the M72, or for what I find a bit more spicy, a civilian made mail-order weapon. I don't exactly know the gun laws of America in the Fallout universe, but considering civilians still had fully-automatic weapons, its reasonable to assume that they could still mail-order firearms, which was a common practice for more niche and specialized firearms. This theory could also explain the somewhat large number of rifles in Fallout 4 and 76. TLDR: M72 is German, used by special forces. Fo3 and NV Variant is first attempt at making a rifle for wider military use, saw limited use by the military beyond Special Forces. Fo4 and 76 Variant is either another prototype or a special mail-order weapon.

The Guass Shotgun would be, by definition, considered a Volley Gun, as the definition of Volley Gun is and I quote: “A volley gun is a gun with multiple single-shot barrels that shoot projectiles in volley fire, either simultaneously or in succession. Although capable of unleashing intense firepower, volley guns differ from modern machine guns in that they lack autoloading and automatic fire mechanisms, and therefore their volume of fire is limited by the number of barrels bundled together.” So it WOULD be a Guass Volley Gun

The history of the Gauss (as i persevere it) originally Walter creates the original M72 that exported examples to the US along with the Gauss pistol PPK12. The US went about studying these weapons used them in the development of their own Gauss weaponry. First starting with the version we see in F4 and F76 with an example being created for the president. Eventually the US created their own version based more of the M72 than their own prototypes, this gave us the Gauss Rifle of F3 and NV. The US gave no real attempt to further development of the PPK12 as focus was clearly more of primary infantry weapons rather than side arms. As such this is why we see the F76 Gauss pistol can be seen more as a modification of the PPK12. The Gauss shotgun is more of a proof of concept design though due down to its much higher energy requirements the weapon was abandoned in the early development stage. As for the use of the Gauss rifle in pro Chinese propaganda seen in the Anchorage simulation, it could be a mistake or it could be a potential Chinese copy of the American variant of the weapon perhaps trying to claim that it is in fact Chinese and that it is the Americans who have stolen the design.

The pulse pistol and rifle are both likely mazer type weapons. These weapons use ionizing lasers to carve a path through the air to the target for a high energy lightning bolt to follow. They suffer from range issues due to wind currents and power requirement. The different Gauss rifles and their counterparts from 2 and tactics are probably German weapons bought in preperation for the Resource Wars. The ones in 3, NV, 4, and 76 are all American attempts to re-create the German weapons during the war, with the 76 and 4 versions both being the first prototypes and recreations of it respectively, and the 3 and NV ones being the 'battle ready' versions issued to Special Forces troops.

A piece of iron would probably survive reasonable distances at extreme speeds under atmospheric oxygen. It would absolutely burn but not very fast compared to the velocity of the round. Aluminum might be a better choice for corrosion resistance but its lower melting point may be a problem depending on specifics. The US Navy tested aluminum slugs but these were way bigger than 2mm. Mass really isn't much of a concern at these velcoities short of the round totally turning to gas.

The fallout 4 and 76 gauss weapon lacks a lot of the things that make the military weapons good for war. as you mentioned there are exposed wires, nixie tubes, and additionally a wooden stock all of which would be prone to damage during any actual combat. we know a much more closed variant was used by the military, so to me that just leaves the civilian market as an option. this would explain why there are multiple gauss weapons that look identical between both the commonwealth and Appalachia, why they use more visually stylistic designs, and why there would be a star spangled banner version seemingly professionally done. someone could have seen the US military fielding their gauss weapons and tried to make a visually distinct and patent compliant version of an m72 to sell to the common folk. when it comes to the m72 and fallout 3 gauss weapons, i imagine its something similar to the 1903 Springfield vs the m1 Garand, where they reached a point where they had a more applicable weapon for what they wanted, but still had the original around so they continued to field it.

Okay so I have a idea for the gauss cannons, the German one obviously got sold abroad and that's why it's in the earlier fallouts in America, but what if the fallout 3 and new Vegas ones were also sold abroad and not American? we see them in america and on the American magazines but we also see it on that Chinese propergander! It might not be a mistake in the anchorage simulation but instead it wasnt exclusively sold to the Americans. the Chinese used it in Alaska to try and combat power armour! This also explains the fallout 4 gauss rifle as being a American attempt to replicate it, which made it bulkier, but fixed the limited magazine size issues it had, thus why its so much more common in fallout 4 than any other games and so much more prototype looking, this also explains the president one in 76!

I'd say railgun classifies as an energy weapon for the following reasons: * it should be recoil-less, compared to conventional firearm, making the technique of actually using it closer to that for other recoil-less weapons... such as plasma and laser guns * it is a high tech weapon, so its maintenance is also a skill set closer to that for energy weapons than conventional * the "ammo" it uses (or at least the bit you need to reload during usage) is energy weapon class ammo

That's making more sense if each round has a charge of propellent to get it to the first coil? The flechette needs titanium or teflon for heat resistance? The range is not great in 4 due to low mass? Oh the gauss rifle is definitely Chinese, in 3. It's paired with Chinese stealth suit in the DLC. There are at least one or two snipers who try to kill you with the combo. The American Gauss is the CC add on in 4. At least that's how I see it, but the animations do make it confusing as the version used by the player and the Chinese seems to change between the games. Because the rounds are hard to find I carry a .44 or plasma pistol as well just in case. I sell all other ammo to buy the kind I need when I can.

The fallout 4/76 gauss weapon it’s just a military prototype to make a cheaper alternative but it failed while being developed due to the use of the expensive 2mm ammo, and then after the war soldiers started fixing these prototypes because of the lack of German gauss rifles and a small but decent supply of these cartridges and the advantage of being a really good weapon to take down mutants and other militas ,also despite these cartridges being expensive they only require lead and steel to be made, so a small factory like the converted ammunitions factory in f76 would be able to manufacture them at a slow pace

My idea for the gauss rifle models are that the models can potentially be varied based on the manufacturer, first being made on the west coast, a few copies of west coast models made their way east, most likely to make improvements on the current model, thus, granting us the multiple models of gauss rifle, the "prototype" was a west coast model, and the fallout 4 and 76 are an east coast model
