When I take off my -5 glasses I see a silky smooth creamy BOKEH which can be replicated only with some serious L glass.

Yes! Depth of focus makes it easier! kinda difficult to explain 100mm @f2.8 is has shallow DOF than a 20mm @f2.8 With a massive DOF, both on 5 meters focusing range

That was just a remake of the Gerald Undone video. Will be good that you remake your video where you was testing full frame vs APSC, and don’t forget to take in consideration the ISO equivalence between FF and APSC
@paulchoate1

I’d like to see a part two! The problem I see people having is saying things like “f/4 is f/4 is f/4...sensor doesn’t matter, etc”. But what people don’t seem to get is while the ratio is the same regardless of sensor the physical size of the sensor makes a big difference. So F4 on my full frame is going to give me a different look in terms of DOf, out of focus area, etc. with EQUIVALENT focal distance on my mft camera. The only way a mft camera can match dof of a FF camera is to use a lens with half the focal length AND double the aperture. Or am I totally wrong?
@mattwhorlow9900
@mattwhorlow9900 5 лет назад
errr, not quite. If you take a Full frame camera, and an APSC camera - and mount the same lens with the same focal length and the same aperture setting on both cameras, then you will see the same depth of focus* on both cameras - but a larger field of view on the full frame camera. However if you then zoom out on the APSC camera so that you match the same field of view as the full frame camera - then this will change your depth of focus * I agree with Dave - the name 'depth of field' is wrong
@Zakna
@Zakna 5 лет назад
f/4 is f/4 is f/4, that's a physical description of the lens. Of course you wouldn't use a 50mm 1.4 the same way on a full frame as you would on a crop body.
@briant4078
@briant4078 5 лет назад
Sort of know what you mean but depth of focus is the depth of field after the lens and up to the sensor. Depth of field is in general terms away from where you are, think of a footballer on the field , a cow in the field etc.
@mattwhorlow9900
@mattwhorlow9900 5 лет назад
A very good explanation - the best description I have seen on this. You need to do a part 2 to induce the concept of infinity focus with would then lead on quite nicely to hyper-focal focusing.

Suggestion: One thing that’s missing sorely is how to practically choose fstops creatively and effectively for dramatic focal effect given different typical shooting scenarios and different subjects. Ie Yes I know how to get shallow vs deep. But how to choose one that’s appropriately in between for the subject or mood? What to choose for rapid fire candid manual shooting which doesn’t spoil the photo from being too out of focus while not being too prosaically in focus. Where’s the sweet spot? Are there different schools of thought? What to choose for wispy ethereal landscapes. Is it just experience experience experience? Is there a shortcut or some rules of thumb with some justification. That’s the advanced driving course that’s missing sorely.

Thanks for this... Too many people have been sold on the idea that they need FF to get shallow depth of field
@paulchoate1
@paulchoate1 5 лет назад
As long as you’re using a lens on your mft camera with half the focal Length and twice the aperture as that on a FF camera the pic should look about the same (all else being equal)
@Noojtxeeg
@Noojtxeeg 5 лет назад
@@paulchoate1 that is assuming you keep the distance from the subject the same though. He explains it in the video.
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 5 лет назад
If you shrink the sensor down then you increase your effective focal length, this means that you need either need to move away from your subject or you reduce your focal length, both will deepen your depth of field unless you increase the size of your aperture value to compensate

Thanks Dave, very clear idea about the depth of field. One thing, I'm wondering about the factors that effect on the DOF, is how about the pixel size on a image sensor. If the size of pixel is shrink to quarter of other camera sensor (means each side is half), the image information slightly away from the exact focus point would be projected on four pixels in the camera when other factors are identical, I think. Then the image would look blur, unlikely the exact focus point still sharply stay in one pixel. How do you think? Thanks.
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 5 лет назад
It wouldn't have an effect, the depth of field is already created by the lens and the image still gets projected to the same size in the camera body. Pixel size or number of pixels will just affect how well the information is captured, but won't change the depth of field
@TheBoMaAn971
@TheBoMaAn971 5 лет назад
Nothing new but good explanation
@paulbk7810
@paulbk7810 5 лет назад
Sensor size has nothing to do with DOF. Nothing. Imagine you cut the top half of the camera off. Now you can see the lens > aperture > sensor. The lens casts an image through the aperture onto the sensor. Replace the sensor with any size you want. And the only thing that changes is the field of view. That is, the amount of the image captured by the sensor. A larger sensor captures more of the image. A smaller sensor captures less of the image. The virtual image created by the lens does not change. The DOF within the image created by the lens does not change.
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 5 лет назад
True - but sensor size does dictate the focal length required to get your composition how you want it ... So sensor size does indirectly affect DoF

Getting an ef to efm speedbooster how would other lenses non ef go on it if fit the mount?
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 5 лет назад
They wouldn't fit, if it's an EF to EF-M converter then it will only accept EF lenses
@edwardnoble9897
@edwardnoble9897 5 лет назад
Nice explanation. There was a couple things in there I hadn't seen visualised before so it was fun to see. Going off on a slight tangent - I recently tried a panorama to emphasise the DoF and got an interesting effect on tarmac. The DoF showed up as a darker line (because it's sharper) and looks like someone painted a line there. It's fun to see where the focus plane intersects the scene of a wide angle: www.flickr.com/photos/eddnoble/43376751011
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 5 лет назад
Yeah it looks like you've shot with an arc so the DoF is curved which has put either end of the bike slightly out of focus But it's a great technique to get crazy DoF

It would be better McKeggan if there is a scientific way of understanding focus. No ,there is no exact pixel shift in depth or how our eyes works.If there are ,please tell me. It is a matter of t=2Nc(v/f).
@andrewbristoe1833
@andrewbristoe1833 5 лет назад
That is weird i think what yr saying is 300 mm is 300 mm on ff or apsc but the focal appearance is different that’s out their with Pluto or eye tricks the 300 apsc looks closer an optical illusion because of crop
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 5 лет назад
The image that projects into the camera body doesn't change. The difference is APS-C can't see the whole image projected by a full frame lens

A couple of years ago I learn about this from this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-34jkJoN8qOI.html He has videos for S-stop and ISO, and the rest are just family stuff for the most part (So is not your competition in youtube). Most of his subscribers are there because of those three videos. You should take a look, is really good. I especially love the F-stop video one.
