I thought that was a little silly and cartoonish. Then again, I’m not a sheltered, emotionally immature lunatic. Im from the south side of Chicago. I’ve been in life or death situations. I know plenty others that live most of their lives with the understanding that leaving your home is a deadly risk. While I fully understand people have a breaking point, and will cross it, people also rise to the situation just as frequently if not more so.

King did think of it, though. In the novella, when they escape the supermarket, the main character thinks: "I checked the gun and then put it into the glove compartment. Ollie had reloaded it after the expedition to the drugstore. The rest of the shells had disappeared with him, but that was all right. He had fired at Mrs. Carmody, he had fired once at the clawed thing, and the gun had discharged once when it hit the ground. They could at least wait until the monster were close to kill themselves, but hearing them was enough. Just 5 more minutes and they would all be save. Plus, it really hits home that they messed up in the end that they could all probably survive if they weren't so scared and more selfless if they had helped that lady right at the beginning - she survived and found her kids, and they also survived. The ending was so good (it's different than the book) that when Stephen King read the script he was like "fuck me, I wish I had thought of that". If the original writer likes the ending someone else wrote for his story more than his own ending, you got to just get over your "I can't handle sad endings" and appreciate the art that's on display, which is what this ending is. There's plenty to fault in the movie itself but I'd say the ending is pretty much pure perfection.

The Mist shook me to my core, really stuck with me back then. I recommend the B&W version tho, really gives you that Night of the Living Dead vibe. I read somewhere that Darabont always wanted to make The Mist, and that is the opposite of The Shawshank Redemption, Shawshank is about keep keeping hope, and never giving up no matter what, The Mist is the opposite, what happens after you lose hope. That's when I realized that the ending was absolutely necessary for the rest of the movie to work. It's a total gut punch.

Nothing beats some good old school 101 psychology.
@ProxyDoug
@ProxyDoug 2 года назад
At first I didn't like it not because it's sad, but because it was kind of staged and rather predictable, because it always felt like the Mist would only subside once he killed everyone. Also, you get this situation that is very well defined along with a punchline, but there's no creativity from the characters when the Mist itself, as an environment, is sort of like a new frontier outside of the events of the mall which worked sort of like Plato's Cave situation where you were cut off from the real world, but also given a limited view from it. To sum it up, you don't actually know the odds of surviving in it, if this film was to be seen that way. That said, today I appreciate the cosmic horror aspect of it and the idea that, in the same way the Mist exaggerated the fanaticism on the people in the mall, it drove Dave to believe that, that was his best option and that it was a burden he had to carry, which makes me believe that if they waited for a week on that car, the Mist would only subside once he was the only one left.

"The ending put me in a funk for two weeks" Oh I feel that. When I watched that ending I was absolutely miserable for a while and I literally had to watch funny cartoons because I felt so deeply scarred. I definitely think this ending is incredibly effective, and while I don't hate it necessarily (as a writing choice that is) I do kinda feel that it's one of those endings that's a little TOO cruel. Like in a movie where everything was already looking down, having that be the ending just feels incredibly mean. But I do get why it is the way that it is and I can't argue with effective storytelling. In any case I think this one of those reviews of yours where I agree with absolutely everything! Especially in regards to the monsters, they're so effective when you can't see them that well or can't see them at all. I wasn't a fan of the big bug window scene either, too much CGI.
