This 1929 Fordor got an Ottwell Health heater. Of the model A heaters I've tried this is my favorite. Very effective, especially if you duct the heat inside the car where you want it.
if you have a mind to, please subscribe to my channel. I play a fair bit with interesting old cars, especially Model A ford's, which I drive daily, everywhere... except on the freeway. More videos to come on this channel.

As a kid a Model A was our family car. No heater. Wear a coat. I remember Dad taking wood embers to warm the oil pan so it would start in the winter. I was small enough to stand up on the back seat and look out of the back window. Lots of memories from that old car. Once Mom was trying to back out of the yard to go to work. I was on the running board tearfully begging her not to go. She opened the door, pushed me to the grass and backed out. Right over my hand. Seizing an opportunity I grabbed my wrist and wailed. She stopped to check on me. It wasn’t even red! She didn’t say anything. She looked me in the eye and went huumph! My crying miraculously stopped. She went to work.

Incredible video. Loved it. Gets straight to the point, tells what needs to be told and then ends. Good content, subscribed.

There were a lot of these made of various quality. This Otwell is all cast iron, but many used sheet metal covers to capture the heat off the exhaust manifold. Usually a pipe went through the firewall, and some may be equipped with valves to shut it off. Not sure if these were ever a dealer option, but should have been considering the cars were made in cold weather Detroit.

Ford never made an exhaust heater, but I'm sure dealers would sell 3-rd part ones. Otwell was one of the most common and they worked well. Autolite also made some exhaust manifolds with removable covers that you could take off in the summer.

I'd love to own an honest prewar car like this. It seems like so much more fun than a prissy garage queen. Can't in good conscience tape heater ducting to the dash of your frame-off resto Duesenberg..

My dad said in the winter in Illinois where he lived as a child they used to put a pan of diesel fuel underneath the car to warm the engine up before they started it.

My '40 Ford truck used a gasoline fueled cab heater. Fuel was supplied by the fuel pump, only when the engine was running.

Volkswagons also had a gasoline fueled heater option; the standard heater was notorious for not supplying much heat

I love how it's called a "Otwell" like a French person's pronunciation of "Hot well".

Being a purest with no turn signals is fine, but the driving abilities of today's drivers compels me to do otherwise.

It appears to be some sort of heat exchanger at the engine. Heat from the radiator wouldn't do much.

The Real heat comes off of the exhaust manifold. .

Does it put out much heat while sitting still, via the fan?

It does OK, plenty to keep my face/fingers warm! It's much better when cruising at speed.

Is there like a valve or something so you can shut it off?

There's a little door on the inside of the car on the firewall that you can cover the heat inlet. A little hot air still comes through.

Open window, for turn signal, because no electric signals, because you’re a purist……uh-huh. Yet, you’ve a hose beneath steering wheel for aftermarket hot air.

The HEAT comes off of the Hot exhaust manifold metal. NO exhaust fumes enter the car. These type of heaters are safe. They knew what they were doing back then. Hope this helps. 😁 Even Early Volkswagen 🐝 Beetle cars used the Heat from the metal of the exhaust manifold. They were VERY hot too. A friend of mine had a VW. That's how I know. .
