This episode demonstrates the Shadow Box Track plan coupled to the Diorama concept, and why I prefer it over the traditional model railroad layout style. The Track Plan and Shadow Box Drawing is in the "Community" tab. Music: Everything You Wanted - Dan Lebowitz

I keep coming back to this. This time it was to see how high you had the valance because I’m at that point where I’m almost finished with the scenery and am ready to mount the lights and box it out. It’s also kinda neat that I ended up with almost the exact same dimensions and a very similar track plan. 8’10” x 15.5” with two main lines supporting three businesses. I did have a run around but removed it because when I started I hadn’t seen your work and was basically going to glue track to a board and run my grandfather’s trains so I used bargain bin turnouts(regrettably). After seeing Glover road everything changed and 8 months later I’m still scratch building scenery. Thanks for all the help along the way.

You know what you did...... You made a small recording studio with the musicians being the locomotives. All of the same issues come into effect. Mic placing, for the sound effects for the end production. This self diorama itself becomes a speaker enclosure with all the bells and whistles of a stage designed for musicians... e.g. locomotives/actors. I keep thinking of mic placing for effects to be achieved for desired shots..... a nod to a staging for a film or recording for musicians. Well anyway, I really enjoyed this episode. Lots of things for me to think about on my small project. Learned a lot! Thanks!

I had a shelf layout years ago in an apartment and it had flat black around it which you didn't really notice. I've never understood folks that have a light colored or finished wood facia with lots of distractions on it. I see it as theatre techniques. If you don't want people to see it remove the color (which makes it black). Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

The “quilled horns” are what’s making me go with TCS WOW SOUND. That little detail adds SO MUCH REALISM!!! In fact, all of the sounds are far more “organic” IMO. Dig the acoustic benefits of the shadow box, hadn’t thought of that before! I have put my phone in a box to listen to music. And lastly thank you for showing how you use the turnout templates. I too am nowhere near being able to afford the fast track jigs and tools.
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 3 года назад
Thank You for that Ian. You are right about the TCS "quilled horns." They are the best on the market. TCS really nailed them there. Even though I have become a LokSound v5 fan, I still really like the TSC WOW Sound. I always wrestle, a bit, before I upgrade a locomotive between the two. I just wish TCS would slave the "ditch lights" to F6 like ESU does. Don't know why they won`t. Oh well. - Boomer.
@ianisaacs2340
@ianisaacs2340 3 года назад
I’ve heard a few people mention that TCS decoders had limited customization options, and they wish it was easier to do function mapping. This is my first layout and obviously my first go at DCC, I get the function mapping thing but I can’t believe all the options for customizing the sounds is given. What more could one really want?? I like the lok sound decoders a lot, and I know I am being a stickler but it sounds synthetic only having full horn or no horn. I have had the incredible experience of operating a locomotive at the Southern California Railroad museum (formerly Orange empire railway museum) as well as around a dozen cab rides, and they were always kind enough to let me blow the horn! I still get a smile thinking about putting a nathan M3 (my all time favorite horn) through its paces. I have memories going back to when I was three years old of engineers skillfully quilling their Alco RSD1 #1956 with that M3. It really sounds haunting and ominous hearing it slowly fade in and out, can be musical in its own way.

It`s funny how things work. Back in the day when I had all the space and resources I couldn`t find contentment with the railroad hobby - for a few reasons, I guess. I agree with the shadow box effect and that’s what my layout is like. What is the opening between track level and the bottom edge of the light valance? Mine is 12” and I’m thinking of making it 10” by extending the upper fascia down. Right now I can see the top of my backdrop if I’m not focusing on the train and that would solve the problem and make it seem more like a true shadow box. Thanks and stay well!

The opening (aperture) between the track level and the bottom edge of the light valance is 9" (nine inches). I think this is the ideal opening give-or-take an inch either way.
