The moment that won the 1997 World Series needs a deep rewind | Florida vs Cleveland

The 1997 World Series between Cleveland and Florida came down to do-or-die extra innings in a do-or-die Game 7. In the bottom of the 11th, the score was tied, the bases were loaded, and there were two outs. Clutch hitter Edgar Renteria was at the plate for the Marlins. A non-closer with something to prove, Charles Nagy, was on the mound for Cleveland. This is edge-of-your-seat stuff.
But maybe you want to just stand up, a seat’s edge is only so big because with the context of what and who and how we got to this moment, it becomes even more tense.
We’ve got hired guns going up against a pitcher 3 years out of high school. We’ve got a 4x Gold Glove winner embarrassing himself. We’ve got a Cuban defector breaking records. We’ve got baseball purists frothing over the idea that either of these teams could win - and obviously, one of them is about to.
So, see ya in hell, seat. It’s rewind time.

Cleveland was an amazing city all around until you people came north. You’re what made that city empty and become a loser with your sacking of neighborhoods others built and your feral violence. Being black is how Cleveland feels now. Losers from former winnings after adding just one ingredient - blacks. You’re not smarty enough to feel remorse for what you’re feral people do.

I love how baseball can bring people together. My grandfather was a huge Yankees fan, and I grew up with the Blue Jays. When I was young and the Jays had their mini-dynasty, I loved to poke fun. Little did I know of what was to come with the Yankees in the coming years. A couple of years after he passed away (which gutted me), the Yankees happened to be in Toronto on what would have been his 75th birthday. I was at the game and his Yankees skunked my Jays, and I had to chuckle, thinking about how he would have teased me.

Joe Table looked shaky much of the season. Grover always gave pitchers too much rope to hang themselves with. Marlins had been sailing balls deep into the outfield for multiple innings off Jared Wright before Bonilla soloed. Hargrove left him out there all that time when Chuck Nagy was available. THAT was what lost the world series, that Bonilla solo shot.
@jeffallen55

Vizquel wrote in his book (Omar!) that Mesa's eyes were "vacant. Completely empty. Nobody home" on that night. Mesa swore that from then on, every time the two of them faced each other, he'd hit Vizquel in the head. And he did hit him several times. I'll never understand why Mesa wasn't suspended for long periods of time every time he did it. It was premeditated with intent to injure.

Why is it this youtuber refusing to use the word "indian?" The marlins are referred to as "marlins" often but the Indians are distractingly referred to as anything but "indians". Is this some woke virture signaling? I understand the logo and mascot seem cartoonishly racist, but the word Indian is derived from the Spanish "una gente in dios" meaning "a people of god". George Carlin has a number of great sets mocking this absurd over political correctness that seems to be based on nothing but the soft discrimination of lowered expectations. Is the idea that American Indians are more sensitive than the "fighting irish?" What's case for refusing to use this word in the context of sports? I don't get it

The world still cannot figure out how the 1997 Marlins won the World Series. Everything went their way. That's why once you are in, anything can happen.

I had gotten into baseball in 1995 and latched on to the 1995 Indians bandwagon. Their loss to the Braves that year was disappointing, but I remained a die-hard fan of theirs in 1997. I clipped the newspaper for every playoff win on their way to Game 7 of the World Series. Then when Jose Mesa blew the save in the ninth I knew they were done for. The Fernandez error and Renteria single were only a formality. It still hurts almost 25 years later.

I was there… Section 440, Row 23, Seat 3. A $30 ticket, but how many people can say that they saw their team win the World Series in extra innings of Game 7? Yes, the Marlins became a laughing stock, but not that night… that night, they were the best baseball team in the world! And yes, I have my ticket framed, along with the front page of the Miami Herald from the following day, which I was still awake to see delivered.

Edgar Renteria was the last batter of the World Series twice in his career. Both times he hit the ball straight back to the pitcher. Keith Foulke made the play, Charles Nagy didn't.
@SteefPip
@SteefPip Год назад
Renteria had a very interesting career. He won a world series in his second season, then won a second in his second to last season. In both deciding games he drove in the winning runs. He didn't do it in as dramatic of fashion the second time around as he did the first, but he did earn himself the MVP. I like nifty stats like that.

Don’t mind my Indians lost, ABSOLUTELY HATE that they lost to a team that the owner bought through absurdly high priced free agents, only to rip it apart as soon as they won the WS. What a joke, and what an embarrassment for MLB.

Isn't it funny that a moment that takes place in the bottom of the 11th ... of Game 7 ... of the World Series, isn't even in the TOP 10 moments in baseball history...according to Historians and the such. I once saw a list were Derek Jeter's dive into the stands, to catch a baseball in a game in April, was considered a more memorable moment than this??? Really!?!?!? Bill Mazeroski's Home Run, Joe Carter's Home Run, Luis Gonzalez's hit and this moment should be the top.

We remember, please don't remind us that game 7 was just so hard to watch. We should have won in 94, 96, and 97 We also should have won in 2016, but, pitching just ran out of gas. That was our year completely. I think we were jipped to be honest. The mid and late 90's were all of our years. Justice was meh, Grissom was crap. Marlins, ugh can't believe we lost to that garbage. We are now the longest reigning team without a world series win now. Also, Atlanta was dominant back then too. IDK what it is about us CLE teams, but somehow we always blow it. Littlest things, but when the Cavs won in 16 that was bedlam. We did however, only burn 1 cop car so yeah we did good on our behavior. lol The big team is either Browns winning SB or Guards winning Series. The town will go up. 1 last thing, I think Tom Hamilton is the best announcer in baseball. I love his radio voice. After this season, the team just went away and that was it for years.

I grew up in the 90s but for whatever reason I didn't watch sports back then. I started getting into watching sports in the mid 2000s. I remember sports center after the Red Sox had swept the Cardinals in the 2004 World series they were showing highlights and the commentator / journalist/reporter whatever you call them on SportsCenter said that Edgar renteria went from hitting the last RBI in the 1997 World series to being the last out in the 2004 World series. It's so minor but it's just something I remember a lot maybe because that's when I was first getting into watching sports

I guess we will just all ignore the fact that Counsell never touched the 2nd base at 2:15:03 into the game for the out. They called Williams out anyways, then Thome came up and hit a single, which should've been an RBI, with Williams scoring. making the score 3 to 1, and game would've been over in bottom of the 9th. I diana are 1997 world champs
