Nice job! For those that don’t know, 75 is fast on the water, let alone 100. We had an old Hydroswift (Utah company, now out of business) that did 50 after some tweaking. Not many boats kept up with it. Long story short Merlin’s boat is fast!

Blipping the throttle under the bridge is not the sort of thing us grown ups are supposed to do! 😉 I grew up in Essex in the UK, sometimes a bunch of us would head south through the Dartford Tunnel (often on the way to Brands Hatch) on our motorcycles, and pretty much every single biker tested the echo from the tunnel walls by using way to low a gear in order to max the engine rpm. To be fair, were were a bit younger than you.

Dude you should totally put AFC live on that motor😂 from power driven diesel. Then you can kind of adjust your fuel and everything get real good fuel mileage just cruising back to shore or cruising around the lake and then when you really want to have fun juice it up all with two little knobs right in your hand.

Thanks for sharing. I worked with caterpillar one time to turn up a 3512A to get 2250 hp after about 15 minutes it was shooting a 6 foot flame out of the exhaust stack. We named it puff the magic dragon. That was the mid 90’s things have changed a lot sense then. I love all diesel engines each has a special place in my life.

Are you afraid that the need for the spring loaded dip stick might be too much blow-by? Or do diesels have more crankcase pressure that of a gasoline engines?

for the new prop test run, I'll get binoculars and watch from the bank. 100 mph-ish on the water, for some reason scares me a bit. No issue with cars or aircraft. Love the Mail Truck ! A running and driving museum piece.

That oil cooler looks marginal for a single ratio Borg-warner/Velvet Drive let alone the trans you have behind the Cummins. Maybe increasing the cooler size will help with the trans temp. Also is the transmission cooler getting the first of the water from the engine drive raw-water pump?

I read years ago that this London Bridge's original stones are just a veneer. To save on shipping, the faces of the stones were sawed off and that's all that was sent over; just the facade. So very little of the actual London Bridge remains!

Hey Merlin the dip stick popping thing, you've got excessive crankcase pressure. Common problem in marine 6BTAs with shallow sump & Vdrive. With Vdrive engine sits high at drive end when bow is high. High oil level also causes high crankcase pressure, crank picks up oil and whips it round. Fill engine by measuring quarts dont rely on dip stick, I only put 12 quarts in mine. When I fill to high level on dip stick I get oil leaks everywhere. I saw a modified rocker cover that bridged covers 5&6 together, so a vent tube can then be run into air cleaner to lower crankcase pressure . Look up SBMAR VDrive CCV Envirovent system. Hope im not telling you how to suck eggs you obviously been doin this long time, but this 1st time I saw your channel.

I apologize for some reason I thought this was a squirt boat. I had a 1982 Sanger circle runner. I bought it new and wish I still had it. In Indiana it was a fast boat and extremely fun to drive. I still have a 1999 Sea doo GTX Limited the same color as your friends. I really wanted a 21 foot Schiada with a Bank's turboed big block Chevy. Those were the days. ON or OFF 👍

Back in the mid 70's I ran Ski-Mod. and Unblown Gas. The hull was a Mandello Flat Bottom. We held records twice. When I changed to a Minkins Props, not sure of the spelling. The boat came to life. I'm sure the tech guys are long gone but their tech group told me what the boat was doing in the water before I did. May be worth a try. Ps. I;m 74 now.

Pushing dipsticks is a screaming sign you havent done it right. Vent the crank case. Your overheating issues are the hack-tune you have on it. Blowing flame along with the coal-rolling.... Nah.

I absolutely love the flame followed by the coal freight training off of it! Must look absolutely amazing at sunset from a distance. Another bucket list item added too the list ☺️.

I love the mechanicals. The Dodge trans is brilliant. Is it a 47rh? Do you need a bigger heat exchanger? Are you eventually going to come up with an engine cover to reduce the noise? Not a fan of the "rolling coal", I hope you're able to reduce the fuel and exhaust soot.

It looked a like a great day out on the water ,I live in the northern panhandle of west virginia about a mile from the ohio river .I'm in the planning process of building a mini stern wheeler and I definitely want to run something like a diesel tractor engine or maybe a diesel from a vw golf tdi . I want the appearance functional stacks that "roll coal" as they say .any recommendations on which you think would be better I've never worked with diesel so I'm leaning towards the tractor for simplicity. But I will definitely appreciate any advice

I had a similar problem on my pulling truck so we switched to reinforced high pressure lines for the trans lines and it fixed the issue. Expensive for hose but well worth it boats looking and sounding awesome❤❤

I have been saying for 40-some years that if a person was to put an automatic transmission in a fast boat with more pitch in the prop than the engine could handle at low rpm. The transmission would shift to a lower gear and when the boat comes out of the hole and reduces drag it would shift. I always wanted to try it on a 3-point hydro or tunnel hull. But everyone said it wouldn't work and they all laughed and said I was nuts to even try it. I'm so glad to see someone actually try it and prove that the theory works.!!!
