The MONTE Cristo Popular 1950's - 60's Sandwich

The Monte Cristo sandwich is a unique and indulgent variation of the French croque-monsieur. It became popular in the United States around the 1950s and 1960s. The sandwich typically consists of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between slices of bread that are then dipped in beaten egg and pan-fried or deep-fried until golden brown. Often, it is dusted with powdered sugar and served with a side of jam, usually raspberry, for dipping.
The origins of the Monte Cristo sandwich are a bit of a mystery, but it's believed to have evolved from the croque-monsieur, a grilled cheese and ham sandwich that originated in France around the early 20th century. "Monte Cristo" could be inspired by "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, though the connection between the novel and the sandwich is speculative at best.
The sandwich gained widespread popularity when it appeared on menus in southern California theme parks and restaurants in the 1960s, making it a staple of American comfort food menus. It's known for its delightful contrast of savory and sweet flavours and rich and crunchy texture.

I use to work for a place that one of their best sellers was a monte cristo but they did the cooking quite a bit differently lol. Build the sandwich just like you did yours, but then they would spike the corners with skewers to hold it together and cut diagonally. Instead of the egg wash they would then chuck it into the beer batter they used for fish and chips and into the deep fryer it went. No melty cheese oozing out of the crispy fluffy batter so everything was held in. Less messy and incredibly delicious.

It was brought back in one of the restaurants in Disneyland a few years ago. It was the best food in the park and a destination for me when I went (I keep an annual pass). Then, they went to an industrial pre-packaged version that was horrible. I haven’t had a Monte Cristo since.
@redjupiter2

The first time I had a Monte Cristo was in 1968 in the restaurant that was next to the enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. The restaurant was called the Tahitian Terrace and they had a wonderful menu that included the Monte Cristo. They had a fantastic stage show which included Tahitian dancers and beautiful women performing the hula dances of the islands. My little brother and I insisted that we return to that restaurant the next day on our family vacation to Disneyland where we memorize almost everything in sight and especially that amazing Tahitian Terrace Monte Cristo sandwich. In my earliest days of cooking under my mom's watchful eye I was able to perfect the Monte Cristo sandwich. Sadly the Tahitian Terrace is long gone and has been replaced by several different iterations of eateries over the years.

As we all rushed to embrace the low saturated fat, low protein and highly processed food mantra and its false promise of eternal fitness and longevity. Shame it was all a lie and we've been cursed with morbid obesity and a joyless, tasteless cuisine of guilt and misery. Folks, you are not eternal. Your ancestors ate like this and were happy. One of my all time favorite sandwiches! You can still get them in some restaurants here in the States. My favorite version came with a sweet/spicy Raspberry Jalapeño jam, which was perfect because the slight heat helps cut through the richness of the dish. That jam sent me down a rabbit hole of the fruity/spicy jam & jelly category which is worth exploring, imo.

In 1970, I worked all through HS at W.T. Grants. I used the butter wheel & then grilled the top-split New England hot dog rolls on a panini grill like a grill cheese on both sides. Then put in the chili, then the roller-grilled hot dog, and then the mustard or ketchup, minced onions and pickle relish. Some wanted sauerkraut, too, or minced cabbage on top for the crunch. They were 40 cents, and 45 cents with chili. I sold 230 hot dogs in two hours, in my aqua dress uniform, lol! For 3 years! At Christmas, we would open the front doors of the store where our popcorn machines were. Everyone came in, and then came over to me for a chili dog and a coke. Inflation-beating eating! Pepperridge Farms still makes the New England hot dog rolls, but they are less shallow now.

There's a trick I learned for any kind of fried cheese sandwich, and it's basically once you are about 3/4 done cooking, sprinkle a bit of grated cheese (not much, be sparse) on the outside so it crisps up and gives you that great flavour of the cheese that melts out of the side and "overcooks" and gets crunchy, but now you have that with every bite. The trick is not to put too much on though. just a sprinkle.

back in the early nineties, for reasons that aren't relevant, I was in San Jose area of California and at a restaurant i had breadcrumbed wedges of cheese with fries and it came with ramekin of raspberry jam. Similar cheese and jam vibe to the Monte Cristo. Since then I have often put a bit of jam in an otherwise plain cheese sandwich.

I love these! I ordered one every weekend when we went to Disneyland in Anaheim..we lived really close so went every weekend in the summers of the early to mid 1970’s…it was served at the restaurant inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride..so that dank scent was completely over ridden by the smells of the sumptuous meals they served there..yet the ambiance was all lightening bugs and drooping Spanish moss..what fun for a 9 to 13 year old girl. Too cool, what a great memory!..thank you!

A place in Houston back in 80s made it with 3 slices of French toast and dipped it in a batter with cinnamon and sugar, extra thin slices of turkey, ham and bacon and Deep Fried it in a vat, served with fries and jam, or maple syrup. Wish they were still in business, I’d make the drive to get one. They would put it in the freezer for like 2 minutes to cool the candy-like shell…😍😍 They made a breakfast one with fried eggs too.

back in the mid 60's there was a little mom and pop joint that would hire the high school girls to work there. It would get us boys to go there and spend what money we had. But to get down to it, they made the best Monte Cristo. Used to love that place, so sad it is gone now.

There was a restaurant here in Memphis called Hasting's Place that had a Monte Cristo sandwich, but their version was a bit different. I remember hearing about and seeing these sandwiches on the menu during the 60s when I was a kid but not knowing what they were. They more or less disappeared off the menus by the late 70s, with the odd hold-out scattered throughout both the US & Canada. Today there are a few specialty cafés and restaurants that still offer the traditional Monte Cristo, but mostly in major cities. If you live in a small town, you're out of luck. The Cheesecake Factory also still offers this on their menu and by their picture, looks exactly like Rik's creation. To those that worry about calories and cholesterol content etc., it's all a matter of perspective. If you Google the notorious Las Vegas Heart Attack Café's picture of their Quadruple By-Pass Burger-Monstrosity, the Monte Cristo is a tiny fraction of that. I doubt whether anyone could consume that extreme creation in its entirety and still live to see another day. Now we can get on with the business of enjoying our Monte Cristo guilt free. Well done Rik! Will be making that as a special occasion breakfast sandwich or to show-off for special visitors.
