I live at the city of Siegen and pass this place where all those artefacts where hidden in the last time of the war every day on my way home. The tunnel still exists, but it is closed now.
Rose Valland is poorly depicted in this movie as the fiction character of Claire Simon/Cate Blanchett. While the Nazi plundering was being carried out, Rose Valland, art curator, began secretly recording as much as possible of the more than 20,000 pieces of art brought to the Jeu de Paume Museum. Valland kept secret from the Nazi the fact that she understood German. The Nazi never discovered she was actually an art historian and that she could understand German, they banned all the male historian from the Jeu de Paume, but somehow underestimated her. Working with the French Resistance, she saved thousands of works of art. Rose took action in first person (see the movie The Train), she never went to prison for collaborating with the Nazi (as shown in the movie) on the contrary she risked her life daily passing information to the Resistance. She is one of the most decorated women in French history, pity this does not show up in the movie
your reply is BREATHTAKING GOD BLESS YOU for showing a 'true light' so much is not told !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we live under illusions, fakery and lies, It is now 2024 MILLIONS OF US around the World are seeking out the 'TRUTH' we PRAY
A great movie by John Frankenheimer, featuring Burt Lancaster, Jeanne Moreau and magnificent Suzanne Flon as Claire Simone/Rose Valland whose role is much more valued than in Monument's Men. Still an American movie...
If it's on RU-vid for long it can't be a too good movie usually. From every director or actors and actresses I type in, you'll find everything but the best or most popular and similar
It is partially true as there were multiple operations like these during WWII. Also, during the first years of the war in Syria, the was also an art saving operation. The BBC covered the story, look it up.
The sad fact is, that there are still many works of art in museums all over the world that were never returned to the families of those from whom they were stolen.
I confess I wept .. just briefly mind u .. but I wept. How close it was. The gold teeth got me .. hmm, that got to me. We better wake up 2 ourselves … evil doesn’t sleep/just waits. Thank you 4 posting
Up to today you would not believe how long i have been trying to find the name of this movie, this Brilliantly put together, a fantastic cast, they played there parts so very well, thank you Super Rona for sharing this with us, and thank you RU-vid. 👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful!! It made me remember all the history of art classes in high school. It is not the same looking at the artists' work and the ordeal behind some of them. Thank you
Art is our history and its not to be stolen nor be destroyed we should protect it. It will be the base of the modern society and people shouldn't destroy the paintings kasi yun yung achievements nila (nung artist) , if the paintings were destroyed it's like they never existed.
Presumably you are aware that the Americans stole a great deal of art from Europe in WW2 then? Disgusting little films like this are just designed to whitewash their reputation
A movie which is worth watching. In addition, it makes my point that good films need a good cast, a good director, a good story, and someone who will put a hand deep in the pocket. There have been low-budget productions which made wonderful movies in the past, e.g., the Straight Story, but quality generally (also) depends (and always will) on budget size.
I tend to disagree. It has been well understood, that most of the people of the USA, and a great many others led by 'Hollywood'ism, equate quality with size & lavishness. These people usually are ignorant of 'the message', let alone any value in it. So what you say is largely true. However, many of us see otherwise. 'The message' is all, and any piece of art that has nothing particular to say is totally worthless the archetypal 'Shaggy Dog Story'. A large budget requires the backing of a large studio. But large studios don't like films that require the viewers to use brain cells, as most viewers shy away from the effort required. They would rather do meaningless waffle that they KNOW will sell well.. Also, great 'message, quality can get lost behind Hollywood style 'quality. So most 'quality' films are made without deep pockets. That's my opinion anyway. But this film scores well on both counts. Clooney had the budget, but knows to not let glitz hide the story. A great story and It was well made.
So sad when Hugh Bonneville says “ I am in dire need of rest…” and yes that Bruges Madonna is truly beautiful. Saw it 25 years ago and Thank you Donald Jeffries….
Thank you for uploading this it's one of the better film uploads I've seen here on RU-vid. The only complaint I have is the lack of subtitles for the bits spoken in German & French. It would have been nice to have had these included.
@@dodgem259 It's one of the better uploads for RU-vid. Considering that it's free its very good - it's in focus. The scenes don't jump about & there's no badly sinched dialogue. So yes it's quite good when you take into account what it is.
Funny when you know that much of this film was actually shot in the old East German zone, as the only part of Northern Europe that hasn't changed much since WW2. And Mr. Clooney looked very daper in the bar of my local 5 star hotel I seem to remember. As I was restoring a beautiful period listed house not a 100yards from the Hotel !
So rare. if see anywhere, but side-lines....name Rosa Valland::::"Rose Antonia Maria Valland (1 November 1898 - 18 September 1980) was a French art historian, member of the French Resistance, captain in the French military, and one of the most decorated women in French history. She secretly recorded details of the Nazi plundering of National French and private Jewish-owned art from France; and, working with the French Resistance, she saved thousands of works of art.[1] """ /Wikipedia
This movie really does not do good justice to Rose Valland (Cate Blanchett character), she was really an heroine and the rescue of the work of arts was mostly her merit.
The famous, splendid painting The Venus of the Mirror by Velásquez was stolen from Spain by English soldiers during the Independence War against Napoleon. It should be returned to Madrid, where it belongs. Spain should claim for it even through lawsuit before High Courts.
To the reference of the question weather people who died for those art pieces would be remembered: More than half of the Europe does not remember people who died to liberate it from the fascism.
Oh God in heaven ! Such a wonderful movie in 240 and no subtitles ! How very disappointing to watch with vague clarity in picture , though the sound is excellent. Can you please upload with better pixel quality !
Critisized by film critics, you have to wonder why? Until you consider of course, that this is a movie about 'art' and honour; not pretence and fashion!
22:38 Haha. The Translator has a strong accent, but the germans were whispering in actual German. The "German" Moument Man at the other end wasn't a native German speaker either.
I know that it's totally irrelevant and that probably noone else cares but it kinda annoys me that the "Altaussee salt mine" in the movie is not the real one but some other mine...
A movie that Clooney was so embarrassed about that he emailed Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal saying "‘I fear I’ve let you all down. Not my intention. I apologize. I’ve just lost touch… Who knew? Sorry I won’t do it again."
@@BjrnOttoVasbottenbjovas It's what my daughter - who works in the industry - calls a "lazy movie". It's like they're just going through the motions, phoning in their performances. Complete waste of Cate Blanchett's talents and why have somebody like Matt Damon in it if his character drifts off for a chunk of the movie. It almost felt like John Goodman and Bill Murray had popped onto the film set one day and Clooney said to them "Hey, while you're here, do you fancy a part?" No, I think Clooney was right, he took on too much and dropped the ball - perhaps an "Ocean's 1945" would have been a better option?
Thanks be to whatever powers that the Nazis never got their hands on Picasso's 'Guernica'. They would have certainly destroyed that particular painting and what a loss to the world that would have been.
Blockbuster - I watched this blockbuster already I think Hollywood should stick to comedy, horror and animated movies - that's their domain and reach A serious drama of everyday lives of people, stories of that kind .. oh please don't 😢. That's butchering something alive in people for some pathetic & political stuffed up in and wrapped as a movie. Stick to visual aggressive art Hollywood is known by.
